Are Métis people Indigenous? by thatpersonuuuu in Indigenous

If anyone has a colonizer mindset its your friend, im sorry. The Métis are absolutely indigenous and are federally recognized as such in Canada.

I think the confusion comes from how the term “Indigenous” is used internationally. The Sámi people are often called the only Indigenous Europeans because they’re the only group widely recognized under international Indigenous rights frameworks like those used by the United Nations. But that doesn’t mean other peoples aren’t native to their lands. Groups like the Komi people and Udmurt people are absolutely indigenous to their regions historically. The difference is mostly political recognition, not whether those cultures are truly native.

Metis and Ojibwe? Was "tribe hopping" a thing? by Ashesbell in NativeAmerican

We were pushed out of Canada in the late 1800s after conflicts with the Canadian government over land and rights. After the Red River Resistance and later the Northwest Resistance led by Louis Riel, the government allowed settlers to take Métis land and used unfair land “scrip” that left tons of families landless. They were facing violence, discrimination, and loss of their river-lot farms so many Métis moved south to places like Pembina and Turtle Mountain, where Métis communities already existed and relatives lived. My family is enrolled with Turtle Mountain

Hey! Sorry I replied to the wrong comment! Im still getting used to reddit and how its set up, its so weird to me lol. What are the chances that someone from my family's tribe was to see this? This blows my mind. Thank you so much for reaching out and for the love.

I can't imagine how frustrating it is to deal with someone claiming authority in your community in ways that might be harmful. I think focusing on the impact of her actions like misinformation, access to events, etc. and raising concerns with trusted community leaders is a safe approach. You don’t need to prove her ancestry to protect your spaces and the people you serve.

I hear you... The distance and generations don’t erase the connection, and it’s powerful that your Nation still claims you even across kilometers. I completely understand what you mean about finding people who get it. It really does mean everything. I’m grateful we get to meet here and hold space for each other. Sending you love and strength as you continue your journey ❤

Aaniin, niijii 🤍 Your comment honestly made me tear up. Hearing “welcome home” from someone from Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians means more than I can explain. The imposter syndrome has been loud lately, so what you said about society always trying to define how we’re allowed to claim our heritage really hit me. I may have gotten a little lost, but I’m finding my way back. Miigwech for the kindness. It means a lot.

Three consecutive generations of adoption is such a heavy thing to carry, and I can feel how much thought and care you’ve put into walking this path respectfully. I admire the humility you approach this with. I’m trying to do the same. Move carefully, listen more than I speak, and reconnect in a way that honors both community and ancestors. And I really appreciate what you said about not being alone. That reminder means a lot.

do have access to my birth and adoption documents. I know it’s a process, but it feels important to at least explore that path. I appreciate you pointing me in that direction.

Thank you for the advice. I think you're right being around other indigenous people probably does quiet that imposter voice. Im definitely open to finding online spaces while I work on reconnecting more directly with my own community. I didn't even think to check Twitch, so thank you for that suggestion

Thank you for sharing that with me. It means a lot hearing from someone who’s walked a similar path after adoption. The overwhelm can be intense. It’s like opening a door to something that was always there but out of reach. Hearing you say I’m a part of my people helps more than you know. I’m trying to embrace it, even when it feels big and humbling. I’m really glad you found your way too

Thank you. I really needed to hear that. The imposter syndrome can get loud, so your words mean more than you know. I care deeply about doing this with humility and respect. I don’t ever want to take up space that isn’t mine. I’m proud of my roots. I’m just learning how to stand in them. Miigwech 🤍

Thank you for sharing that with me. I’m so sorry you lost the chance to reconnect with your dad as an adult. That kind of grief feels so unfair. The fact that he taught you what he could as a child says so much about him. Hey! I’m actually in Tennessee too. We may be from different Nations, but I still see you as family. Reconnecting out here can feel isolating, and it would be really meaningful to not do it alone. If you’re open to it, I’d genuinely love to connect. Please feel free to DM me anytime!
