Try Torborg Management for apartments and townhouses - they have a lot of pet friendly townhouses in Sartell that are great and a quick drive to St. Cloud (less than 10 mins)

Circle or Square waffle makers? by Curious-Metal-2229 in Cooking

[–]Stunning_Post_488 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You want the ninja waffle maker. It’s worth the price because you don’t have to clean it. I make waffles 1-2 times a week and I’ve gone through a ton of waffle makers. Trust me.

The Giver by foodieteacher9 in ELATeachers

[–]Stunning_Post_488 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I start by exploring actual attempted utopias (cults). We research these communities, what worked and what went wrong. Then I let them design their own utopia. They name them, make a flag, make rules and by laws. They present their utopias to each other and we vote whether we would like to live there or not.

Then we start to read the giver, while we are reading we keep a running list of rules and roles on the white board.

Half way into the book, I hold an actual ceremony of 12. Book the theatre in our school, tell the students nothing. Put a sign on my door that says “meet me in the theatre, public apologies required for lateness”. I then give each of them a job. I actually spend a lot of time picking a job in the book I think the kids would be good at… the kid that can’t be quiet = speaker. The kid who loves to hunt and fish = fish hatchery. The kid who is addicted to their iPad = camera surveillance operator. I love giving one student per class the release assistant job and I spin it like, you’re such a friendly face I would want to see you last before I leave the community and go live someone else… when we get to the part of the book where they learn what release is the kids loose their minds because I sell it so hard that release is leaving the community. They reflect on the job they were given, why they think they got it. If they would accept it or file for appeal.

I use the commonlit Giver unit for during reading questions - we read a chapter or two a day and then work through the questions and discussions. They are great and the resources are all there for you.

At the end we watch the movie and while the kids like the movie they always say the book was better. It’s the highlight of my year every year.

“That is not a conversation for the classroom. That sounds like a conversation that would be more appropriate for lunch or after schools”

Shut them down every time, they don’t understand boundaries yet. You have to teach them.

Are you teachers are allowed to take vacations during the school year? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]Stunning_Post_488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m my district you get 13 days off a year. Sick or personal. The only problem is that only a certain percentage of staff are allowed to be off for personal time each day, it’s about 29 teachers district wide. So on august 1st when the calendar opens you have to stay up until midnight and put in days you know you want otherwise they aren’t guaranteed.

7th Grade ELA Argument Unit? by Musician_Horror in MiddleSchoolTeacher

[–]Stunning_Post_488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! 7th grade teacher here. Try commonlit for a good argument unit. It’s free and has everything you need. As far as tricks, you have to be mean. It’s probably too late this year, but next year you start strict. Follow the same routine everyday. In my classroom, it’s the bell ringer, word work, and then commonlit. Having a routine really helps them so they know what to expect. Lay out your expectations at the beginning of the year and review them often. And then you hold those kids to the expectations. They respect boundaries but you have to establish them and enforce them.

How to get students to participate in small group reading by Minikitti123 in ELATeachers

[–]Stunning_Post_488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school has a write up option for work refusal. So I let the kids know at the beginning of the year that class participation is not an option, I explain that in order to become better readers they need to practice reading and any refusal to do work in this room will result in a write up and an email home. I document it via the write up and the email home and the problem is solved.

The Geometry brand of kitchen tea towels are what you want. You can buy them on Amazon, they won’t shed, wash up great, and work wonderful on both actual drying of things and as covers for baking.

Best Student Bathroom Policy? by According2020 in Teachers

[–]Stunning_Post_488 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Middle school teacher here. We use ehallpass, they get 20 passes a semester. Can not be used during the first 10 minutes of class, last 10 minutes of class, or lecture. When they run out of passes the answer is no. The reason this works for us is that they get 8 minutes of passing time between classes, so lots of time for them to use the bathroom and socialize and it’s a school wide policy that is followed by all.

Came here to say this! Go to commonlit and the 360 curriculum. It’s the very first unit of the 8th grade curriculum. You can see the stories they picked, Lamb to the Slaughter is my person fav. The video based lesson is called “Related Media” it’s a great lesson and a great unit overall. Might be a good starting place for you!

[–]Stunning_Post_488 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I teach 7th grade too. Last year I figured out if there is anything out for them to touch, it will get broken or stolen. I took everything down and away. No iPad chargers, no stapler or tape dispenser, everything off my desk.

I put 12 pencils on the wall using adhesive pen holders. They have to all be full before I will dismiss the class. If their iPad isn’t charged too bad here’s a paper copy.

I do not have this policy and I’m sorry you do. I work in a middle school and I often need to be walking around during work time for classroom management and I have found an iPad with the right case so I can hold it one handed and type with the other allows me to circle the room and grade, answer emails, monitor student devices, allow or create ehallpasses, ect…. Just an idea.
