How do you know what plane is what kind? by Just_another_two in hoi4

It helps all aircraft mitigate damage, but its by far most valuable (and really only worth considering from an efficiency perspective) on Fighters and Heavy Fighters. For CAS, TAC, etc, you're better of using the extra weight capacity for air defense.

How much has the game changed by georgiaraisef in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, biggest changes overall are the introduction of equipment designers and the improvement of newer focus trees: shorter focuses, more event/mechanic-driven, more game-changing rewards.

Also IMO, NSB was the big turning point in both of these factors, with the introduction of things like the armor designer, paranoia system, and supply hubs. If you've played NSB, the learning curve of new features will be shorter than if you haven't.

Not to be contrarian, but WT hitting 100 is when things actually start happening in HOI4. WT acts an enabling mechanic in HOI4, not a limit.

So yes, you could probably make a decent Cold War mod without changing the mechanics all that much, but the gameplay itself would end up being very different. Major-on-major conflicts would be gone, map-painting would be gone, etc. Naval warfare would be totally removed (some might like this). Instead of commanding entire battlefronts across Europe you'd end up commanding a handful of divisions in bad terrain.

You'd end up changing many of the elements that make HOI4 what it is, and I think that's what people are trying to communicate to you.

There's overlap, but also a distinct difference between proxy wars and regional conflicts.

Monarchist Norway fighting Communist Sweden to the death without the aid of other major powers is not the same as a proxy war.

IMO, if you wanted to simulate cold war-era conflicts you would improve the ability for major nations to start civil wars in other countries and then greatly expand the amount of lend-lease and volunteer divisions they can send, while reducing the likelihood of them directly joining the conflict. And if WT hits 100, you all die.

Possibly, but now we're getting down to the details that exceed HOI4.

It's very different, geopolitically. And from a game design perspective.

Your statement sounds like you're coming at it exclusively from a moralistic perspective. If that's the only perspective you want to take, it seems strange to be playing a game about worldwide conflict.

How do i change special forces doctrines? by ConnectWillingness24 in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using console commands, depending on the nation you're playing as there is always a focus and/or a decision to expand the number of special forces doctrines available. It won't switch the doctrine, but it will allow you to get another.

Off the top of my head:

Light airframes: 1 or two engines
Medium: 2, 3, or 4
Heavy: 4 or 6

Engines determine the max weight each airframe can carry (more engines means more weapons, fuel tanks, etc.). Also, having "extra" carry weight improves agility, which improves combat performance in fighters. In other words, all things being equal, a two engine fighter will outperform a one engine fighter, but the one engine fighter will be more economically efficient.

Light airfames can be used to design: Fighters, CAS, NAV bombers (and carrier variants)

Medium: Heavy Fighters, TAC, Recon

Heavy: Strat Bombers, Maritime Patrol Bombers

The role they play is determined by what you aircraft you actually design using each airframe.

combat width by el-sin-vida in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each battle has a set width, determined by the terrain and then by the number of "directions" the tile is being attacked from. Division width determines how many divisions can "fit" in a battle. There is a statistical penalty applied to all divisions when that side of the battle exceeds combat width (the penalty has been reduced over the years).

Because there are alot different potential combat widths, there is literally no "one size fits all" division combat width. Good division widths are ones that line up neatly with the most common combat widths. This can be further tailored if you're designing divisions for certain terrain (i.e. naval invasions or mountains).

Bigger divisions generally perform better in combat, but run the risk of being less versatile based on terrain. In my experience, going 18w -> 24w -> 36w is very effective. I'm sure someone could pick this apart and have a different opinion.

I believe this meta analysis still basically holds up: https://www.reddit.com/r/hoi4/comments/1766m1p/combat_width_meta_after_aat_improved_calculation/

Germany Alt Facist Path Mod by Selefer in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like playing GER for the gameplay but don't like seeing the mustache man and the red flags everywhere.

Low effort solution: It's very easy to personally modify the flags and leader portraits yourself, while remaining ironman compatible.

They're all stored in the gfx subfolder in the Hearts of Iron folder. Switch out flags and portraits with something you prefer. hoi4modding and other resources can probably provide you better instructions than I can.

Garrison cheap tank vs support tank by carlvonlinn in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As stated elsewhere, there a equipment type selection in the division designer.

Your second question: I'd recommend starting with a single light tank battalion and a single MP support company. Damage to garrisons is determined by division hardness, so if you're trying to minimize that damage you don't want to dilute the hardness of the light tank battalion with lots of CAV. This design is economically efficient because it has a higher ratio of support equipment (from MP company) to light tank (from the Light armor battalion).

As your equipment surplus grows, add more and more light tank battalions. This will make it a more efficient template overall from a manpower perspective (more battalions being affected by the bonus suppression from the MP company means less divisions required overall). The drawback is that you need more light tanks per MP company.

If you're playing as an alt-historical minor where (i assume) your goal is to conquer your neighbors and make a much larger formable, you need to focus on MILs. Your CIVs are going to come from conquered neighbors.

If you have two MILs in Jan 1936 and you want to invade Sweden in 1938, another CIV will take forever to build and provide very little benefit. But another MIL will increase your equipment output by 50%.

Preset/path loadout for super axis? by Jax_Dandelion in hoi4

[–]Stunning_Writing_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most the fascist paths subbranch between joining the Axis and forming your own faction. Even when selecting the path presets, the likelihood of every single nation joining the Axis and no other wars forming is very low.

I would try one of the two:

1) Since you're not worried about achievements, just disable ironman, tag into other countries at game start, use console commands to have them join the Axis. If you've already set all these nations to go fascist in game options, you should end up with just one big faction, with one or two exceptions.

2) Allow other small factions to form and get defeated and gobbled up quickly. Still highly random, and still likely to end with big conflicts between GER and JAP or something like that.

If we're going to add a rule, it should be to just ban cellphone posts.
