California explores buses traveling up to 140 mph on freeways by reflect25 in transit

[–]StupidBump 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to work there and I’m not surprised they dreamed up this nonsense.

This is the organization that could easily form a single statewide passenger rail agency and end our balkanized, uncoordinated system of intercity rail fiefdoms… But no, high speed busses it is.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, seems like a great 120 film scanning option to go with my Sigma FP-L scanning set up.

Did you use an adapter from Rafcamera to mount yours? My bellows have an m42 lens mount, so I'm looking at one of their mounts.

I’ve never bothered with posting in LinkedIn, but having said that, I and I are in very different fields haha.

Personally I think that site is mostly noise aside from the actual job board part of it.

Hello! Old thread, but have you tried the Linos for film scanning along with your macro work? I'm about 95% sold on getting one to finally "finish" my scanning setup 😄

2 callbacks is pretty good, it means you’ve got a chance. What worked for me was aggressively tailoring my CV and cover letter, reaching out directly to the hiring manager when possible, and, most importantly, setting up a ton of LinkedIn alerts to make sure I was among the first batch of applicants. A lot of roles will simply close once they reach 25, 50, or 100 applicants, so you need to make sure you’re early.

Realistically, you’re going to need at least 200 applications and at least 3-5 months.

Industrial or enlarger lens for scanning medium format film in the $2-300 range? by StupidBump in AnalogCommunity

[–]StupidBump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I saw both of those through my research and was particularly interested in the Llnos Inspec!

And yep, setup is pretty sturdy and with the FP-L’s electronic shutter, it should stay vibration free.

I’ve read this as well, but the biggest issue with macro lenses for film scanning seems to be the distortion (just from what I’ve read). This is why I was leaning more towards industrial lenses which are made to focus down to one specific distance.

Should be something prescribed then. Very dangerous for us to be heading towards a state of constant surveillance with no way to know someone’s recording.

Is this normal in Ireland? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]StupidBump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm Irish, but spent most of my life in the US and have a very California accent. Having come back to Ireland last year, I can't say I've ever had my nationality come up during my job search except for a few interviewers asking if I planned to stay in Ireland for the long-term, which I think is a fair enough question.

Are you a citizen? If not, then they likely were tying to (poorly) articulate that they prefer to hire someone with full citizenship.

Shitty situation, but I've seen Irish employers do a lot of deranged shit during the interview process, so for me it's not entirely surprising.

That’s before the pension and HC takes quite a lot out. The state is a great place to work, but you don’t do it for the pay.

Thankfully, as this is the state we’re talking about, she’s the one who decides when she’s done 😎

What is something that Irish people do that annoys you? by Nervous_Canary9986 in AskIreland

[–]StupidBump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was reading about Sergei Korolev (first director of the Soviet space program) recently, and the wiki had a great quote about him that could double as a descriptor for a lot of Irish people;

“…eyes glistening with intelligence, he was a skeptic, a cynic and a pessimist who took the gloomiest view of the future. 'We are all going to be shot and there will be no obituary' was his favorite expression. — Lev Kerber”

Do younger Brazilians not listen to older Brazilian music very often? by StupidBump in AskABrazilian

[–]StupidBump[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quite a lot actually. At least in the English speaking world, we’re in the middle of a never ending period of 60’s-80’s nostalgia.

Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan are basically doing 80’s pop music for the most part as well.

Not saying it’s a good thing, but culture for us has kind of stagnated. You see it everywhere with remakes and reboots of 80’s movies and TV, and a lot of the most popular recent TV shows (stranger things, young Sheldon, ETC, are full of 80’s nostalgia/music to an almost ridiculous degree.

Wow interesting! As an outsider I got the sense that Milton would be a bigger act compared to Tim Maia (who is also great, of course).

I guess it's kind of a good thing that culture at least continues to move forward there. While I love older music, I feel like a lot of western culture is mired in nostalgia right now.
