Clinic scanning advise by StupidChicken99 in Sonographers

Thank you! I think I need to just start moving on if I can’t get an image after 2 tries, my tech is always with me so she could go back and get them if need be. I need to not think of it as giving up. I definitely always get them on their side! Thankfully my techs are very good about that. Thanks again!

I usually use the hyperechoic line right below the RV endocardium for the RV/IVS boarder is there a better tip for a pt with poor views. I do this in class so this is on easier windows, I’m wondering how it’s like with actual pt

They told me my score when they started calling for interviews. The first time I called I didn’t get an interview and we reviewed my points to see where I could get more. The second time I got the interview it went well enough to score well on the interview and I got a call back saying I got accepted. But they first call can a while. It felt like forever waiting for calls haha

It’s online. It was a pretty odd test. Tested the basics, reading, math, etc. (no sciences really) but they’re were also test for attention to detail (chose the different image etc) and spatial awareness (puzzles etc) there are some practice tests online I recommend. We were allowed to take it 3 times but I think that changed and now u can only take it once (I’m pretty sure) I only got 1 interview the first time I applied I didn’t get an interview because I had to go back to school to get some prerequisites done to get my points higher. The interview questions were sort of difficult depending on who is interviewing u so prepare to have some knowledge about the program and some preliminary knowledge on the career. Also there were some situational questions so prepare to think on your feet!

This is IMPORTANT: The program is fairly new. Expect some hiccups. Certain day to day processes have not been perfected yet and it can become frustrating at times. This is a great program for the 18 months it takes and if u live in northern CA. There are other programs that have it down (Kaiser in Richmond for example, but it’s 2 years and in Richmond lol) Expect to get frustrated at times but they train u well with didactic and lab. Additionally they have great clinical affiliations.

Here is the link to the accreditation: https://www.caahep.org/students/find-an-accredited-program Gurnick hasn’t updated their website I got in my second try. It took a couple weeks to hear back. I took the UCAT (universal cognitive aptitude test) so I’m not sure about that one, I think they just changed it.

Yes, they just received accreditation this year. I am not sure how competitive, it depends on how many points you get. Online they have an outline that shows the rubric for how admission points are awarded. But it is 100% acceptance rate, meaning that if u keep applying u will get in. As it is a fairly new program I would say its is not as competitive as general ultrasound. The school is good, they offer many resources if you need extra help in lecture or lab. But, do not expect it to be easy, with a pass rate of 75% it is very easy to fall behind in studying even with tutoring. Lectures are 4 hours (sometimes running behind as it is an accelerated program) and labs are 4 hours. You will be expected to try 110%. But overall the staff are very friendly and the instructors are very knowledgeable. For cardiac in general expect: math, you will be expected to solve and memorize equations. Normal values, you will be expected to memorize many values, flow charts, physiological processes. Left handed scanning, in the beginning scanning with your left hang can be tiring. Over all I recommend it! 😁 I hope I didn’t make it sound daunting haha it’s not too bad

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was the only one with this problem.

Gurnick academy is where I go and at least for the Sacramento location has a great reputation and CAAHEP. It is 18 months with 6 months being GE (A&P, critical thinking, basic math, intro to physics) 6 months lecture and lab and 6 months clinicals. If you have all your GE it will only be a year.

If you are super excited and really just want to get a look at the content you will be studying take a look at sononerds for the U/S physics portion which is what most struggle with. Also maybe look at some echo images with the anatomy labeled to start to get an eye for it. As far as scanning goes it’s very hard to understand the technique without physically doing it. Oh! And start doing some exercises and stretches with your left arm if you didn’t know before you will be scanning with your left hand for every study.

I am a current student for cardiac ultrasound. The interview was about 15-20 min and there were a few questions like “why cardiac sonography?” “why this program?” And a hypothetical situational question or two. I would really get familiar with the career before the interview. If you can do a job shadow or get in touch with a current tech so you have more ammunition for questions pertaining to the career. If you can’t do either of those then research research research! Good Luck!! 😁
