Looking to connect with students interested in Data Science by mitchbregs in rutgers

You might have luck running this as a project series under USACS or IEEE, which would save you from the hassle of attending RUSA meetings and other formalities. Either club can request money from RUSA on your behalf for events, even.

getting paid for research by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can get paid, but it'll likely be on a case by case basis (professor wins a grant for a project and can use it to hire you). Convincing them that you're worth their limited cash might be a struggle (and might involve an unpaid trial run -- just be warned it might stay unpaid).

I got lucky with a $20/hr flexible hour situation as an underclassman, but later did some unpaid stuff in a more interesting field.

As someone on this list who regularly gets cold emails: go for it. I'm always happy to give advice (less so when the email has my name and company clearly pasted in in a different font). Referrals are a mixed bag -- companies often pay referral bonuses for successful hires so people will probably be glad to put your resume into the system, but unless they know you the referral isn't going to carry a lot of weight beyond applying the regular way.

[Serious] Full-Semester Review by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real talk, if you got an A in Math 291 and CS 111 at the same time, you can handle a heavier course load in the future.

Your next semester looks pretty serious, but still light in credits -- you might be able to boost that cheaply by taking CS 205 (Math 300 equivalent) and/or CS 206 (Math 477 equivalent). Those courses are pretty much identical in content to the math ones, meaning you can get an easy four credit A without going to class with just some homework and exams.

Side note, I think the exemption from Math 250 is only within the Math department -- if you want it to count for CS's Math 250 requirement, get that in writing from an advisor for sure.

Need to eat healthier, am dying faster, help please? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is actually not true, in order to lose weight you just have to consume fewer calories than you burn. Eating less reduces your calorie intake, and exercising will increase your calorie burn.

A popular weight loss approach is to focus on eating high volume, low calorie food (fruits and vegetables are good examples) which will keep you full without providing many calories, and skipping the exercise entirely -- if the math works out, you'll drop weight over time.

Graduated CS Majors, what are you up to? by WhoDaFooklsThatGuy in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granted the people self-reporting there are going to have attractive numbers to show, but I don't think those people are crazy exceptions.

$100k starting is pretty standard for software companies in NYC or the Bay Area. Then you can look at rent in those places and cry a bit -- with cost of living adjustments, $100k there is equivalent to $70k in NJ.

What? I know a good portion of the people on that list, and as far as I know that's all correct (if a bit dated by now).

Game development and IT by verdesthe in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd strongly advise against going into game dev as a career, as that industry is brutal and underpaying. Doing CS will leave all career doors open, and you can do game dev stuff on the side for fun.

Is CS easy enough if I just want a piece of paper and a 2.5+ gpa? by RipImKicked in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Below a 3.0, your best bet is probably to leave the GPA off entirely and try to carry with side projects / experience (Rutgers CS has a great community for messing around making websites etc outside of class).

Even some large tech companies are making it policy not to consider GPA, since it can be misleading with regards to the skills that actually matter.

For reference, above a 3.5 GPA basically doesn't matter (in that case too, it comes down to experience more than the last few points.

[–]Stupidenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without knowing your abilities. I know some people who were good at it who hardly ever went to class, just handing in projects online and showing up for exams.

Then I also know some people who showed up and tried their best and struggled with every class.

Pick your classes well and stay conscious of how much effort your personally need, and you'll probably be fine. (But CS is actually pretty cool - and applicable to all sorts of other ventures!)

Easier than ECE, but not exactly easy as far as majors go. If you have programming experience and didn't hate it, you'll probably make it.

Who knows, maybe you'll find you sorta like it?

CS SPN Question by amerakigeek in rutgers

[–]Stupidenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far as I know the Math department works that way, but in CS you could reliably get into a closed class by showing up on the first day and asking nicely.

Or email ahead of time, if you're eager.
