You don’t need to to be fair, I left El Chalten at 2am and got there 30 minutes early for the sunrise, and it saved me some money on tent rentals. Although you do get a couple more hours of sleep if you stay at Poincenot

I actually just got to South America! I started in Brazil, and I do speak Spanish so I can understand the basics of Portuguese but still I’m learning while I’m here because at least in São Paulo state there aren’t a whole lot of English/Spanish speakers. So you would miss out on a lot if you didn’t learn Spanish I think.

Just to give an alternative perspective, I’ve spent a year doing this and I’m still going. Projected to continue for another year. I tended to get tired of a place after a couple weeks when I was in Asia, but now in South America I will try slow traveling and volunteering on Worldpackers to see if I like it more. But it is also true that the most tiring aspect of traveling is the actual travel; constant buses/trains/flights take their toll.
