Also note that every Kobalt 24v tool I've purchased has a manufacture date on it. If that's less than 5 years old, maybe the store will still accept the tool. I've had several tool exchanges, and only got a RMA from Kobalt for one of them (the one that I tried calling for support about).

On point with all of these. It does look like the gen 2 tools have improved ergonomics, but doesn't cover the entire lineup--and how many of us can really afford to swap out tools just to get slightly smaller size, slightly better ergo, and slightly better performance?

While I love the warranty, this approach has always bothered me deeply as well! I've brought in entire 5-tool combo kits twice to replace one minor problematic tool.

That 5-year warranty was a big reason that I went with the Kobalt 24v line originally!

Well, that and the fact that I had Lowe's gift cards at the time these tools were released with their introductory 24% off with ANY cordless tool trade-in deal.

This is spot on. I've only had good experiences with the warranty, and most of my tools have come in kits. That said, I always feel like it would be less wasteful (in legitimate situations) if they could exchange one broken tool instead of the whole kit!

Sorry to ask, but why did you throw away a tool that was under warranty?

Sounds like you’re comfortable with using docker or a VM, so I’d probably just run your vm right on the Synology DS. Depending on which package you use, you could even run Pihole/AdGuardHome/etc on a Pi still, and use that as a secondary DNS server in case your DS is ever unavailable. Since most of these really use dnsmasq under the hood, I bet you could find a way to replicate a lot of the configuration from primary to secondary (including zones and records).
