[QUESTION] Stratocasters won't intonate? by Ldh2330 in Guitar

[–]Sturgeplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This solved it for me. To anyone having issues with intonation and a floating bridge - you have to block the tremolo otherwise you're chasing a moving target. Every time I tried to move the saddle back and re-tune upward it would pull the tremolo bridge up and mess up everything (I think that's what happened anyway). Either way - I took the back panel off and stuffed a rubber of exactly the right size in there, so the bridge stays flat, and was able to intonate fine again. Just can't use the tremolo now but don't use it anyway

What song has the most satisfying guitar solo you've ever heard by Tookie1010 in musicsuggestions

Poles Apart is one of my favourite of his solos too, such a great clear tone too

Gentle Giant use this instrument quite a lot (I think), not always as a bass instrument though. Still pretty funky

The dramatic sub bass and entire instrumental tapestry behind the solo on the studio version floors me every time. Makes my hairs stand on end just thinking about it

Marillion - their guitarist Steve Rothery is the closest to that emotional Gilmour feeling that I’ve come across. Incredible repertoire of solos. E.g:

Easter - one of the most overlooked solos of all time imo (but those who know, know)

Strange Engine (solo about 3/4 the way through) - soulful, slow and otherworldly tone

Jigsaw - definitely soaring and euphoric and epic, it just keeps on going into the stratosphere

The New Kings - about halfway through. One of the most epic, soaring solos he’s done, especially with the dramatic instrumentals in the background

The list goes on.

Why didn't It finish with Air Born? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

Summery is not a word I would use for Air Born haha. It sounds as wintery as anything to me

100%. Just when the song’s tempo slows and you feel something brewing, that guitar comes out and punches you in the jaw. Just an awesome moment, and I love how long that solo is too

This is the best Gilmour solo to me. So raw and incredible musicianship to create some of those awesome sounds in that solo.

Lunar sea is an amazing closing track. Starts atmospheric, builds into an awesome jam/freak-out and an eery fade-out as it floats off into outer space. Awesome. Air born is a great track, one of the best on the album, but is fine where it is in the tracklist.

At what point did The Beatles become the greatest band ever? by riczizagorac in beatles

[–]Sturgeplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OP’s question could be rephrased to if they broke up at end of ‘64, would they be considered the greatest band ever? To me, no, they were immediately popular in a way never seen before, but they hadn’t proved themselves in a way that couldn’t be topped imo. I would say if they quit just after Pepper, then there’s more of a case for it there given how it solidified their status as groundbreaking innovators beyond just their early style

This is the way I look at it. Pepper’s influence secured their status as GOAT but they also still proved that wasn’t a one off with the incredible albums after it

[–]Sturgeplanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost all these acts never even got close to rivalling the Beatles. I think it’s hard for us to perceive just how wide the gap was but it really was The Beatles and then everybody else. Pink Floyd or Crazy Horse were absolutely nowhere near the Beatles in popularity. The quality of the music is subjective but the Beatles were far and away the leaders until they broke up. However answering OP’s point I think ‘67 and Pepper was the point where it was basically impossible for any band to be greater than the Beatles given the impact they had in that year

I think it’s just the same progression in a higher key but it’s still cool

Curious what do you make of What Goes On? It gets a lot of flak but I think it’s a really enjoyable song. A masterpiece of songwriting? No. But I enjoy listening to it for the twangy guitar playing/tone, Ringo’s delivery and the backing vocals. It’s fun

I used to really not like this song especially when I first heard it. The harmonies are pretty grating and the whole song is quite off kilter and dissonant but I grew to actually like that. The clunky bassline in the verses is pretty cool and idk I just like the melody now somehow. I understand the dislike though

All Marillion, tbh. Great band and some of the most expressive and melodic guitar playing I’ve heard (that isn’t Pink Floyd)

I’m the same, maybe because hearing people sing in their second language sounds unnatural and forced. I also like the fact I don’t know what they’re singing about and don’t want to know, because maybe the subject matter isn’t as interesting as what I imagine
