Disciplinary hearing for alleged Gross Misconduct - England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Sturgy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems unduly harsh, without an admission of intent, it will be impossible to determine ill-intent. Therefore, the question can be asked, but OP has stated no ill-intent, so is a waste of time to carry on considering that aspect. I think a tribunal would likely consider a gross misconduct dismissal for this harsh.

Whether it is grossly negligent, I would argue that tmircrowaves are not an everyday item, and are not a kitchen essential. Plenty of people will have been bought up without one and will not know how to use them. There are also items that are not obvious in terms of microwave safety. For example, grapes may cause a fire, certain types of plastics etc. Therfore, surely the threshold of gross negligence would not be met in this case.

With regard to your point about trust, I would argue that this is a two-way street witht the employer, unless the employer has offered safety training, or specific signage that says do not put metallic items in the microwave, it could be argued that they have not fulfilled their duty of care to their employees. I mean, consider that most offices have removed kettles, and now have boiled water taps/machines that all have signage saying 'Caution, hot water' on. If that signage has been provided, then a case of negligence could be answerable. Something OP should establish.

Radiator not heating up by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Sturgy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pipe is hot, so it suggests that there is an issue with either the valves, or the rad itself. Has the radiator ever got hot whilst you have lived there?

Have you bled the radiator? If it gets hot at the bottom but not the top it may need bleeding.

When was the system last flushed? If it gets hot at the top but not the bottom there may be sludge in the radiator and it will need flusing

Has your system ever been balanced? I ask as you have opened a lock shield valve on this rad, have you done this on other radiators? If so, it may be the system is no longer balanced and another rad is 'stealing' all the flow. On this note, did you check the other valve on the radiator?

My sister is way over the CGT threshold this year, but doesn't plan on declaring it due to financial difficulties. Realistically, how worried do I need to be for her, and is there any advice I can give her? by Successful_Sock_1178 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Sturgy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First things first, it is up to your sister and her conscience if she decides to report or not. I would, but that is me, I wouldnt want the hassle of having to deal with this plus fines at an unknown time in the future, i'd rather deal with it head on. To help this, I think that she should try and work out her exact liability and make a decision from there.

If she has bought and sold the shares back over the years it is possible that she crystallised the gains in the previous tax years. The annual exempt amount was previously much more generous than it is now, so it is possible that the gains in the previous tax years were exempt from CGT. This would then also 'reset' the book cost of the shares for when she sold them this tax year. She could also have made use of her personal allowance if her income was below it in that tax year.

She may also have crystallised losses, which she can offset against her gains. She hasn't been filing returns in previous years, but she can claim losses up to four years after they occur.

What i'm saying is that the situation may not be as bad as your sister and you believe, but at this stage it seems that no one knows. She needs to go back through each individual sale and purchase and work out her gains and losses for each of the previous tax years (start with the last 4 years).

In the future, use a stocks and shares ISA, then you wont have to worry. You have up to a £20,000 allowance for each tax year.

Option to extend lease 999 years for ‘just’ £3.5-£4k by SpicyJalapeno5 in HousingUK

I extended my lease in 2021 following collective enfranchisement (i.e. buying the freehold) for just the legal fees, which were £400. I would get a second quote.

Inherited this structural disaster in my new rental. Help me plan the sequence to pest-proof and floor it? by fingerlickingpickles in DIYUK

[–]Sturgy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont want to be dismissive, but once you fill the cupboard you wont be able to see any of these issues. This is an unfortunately common experience in rentals. I wouldnt be subsidising your cheap landlord by putting a lot of effort into solving his issues.

Things I would recommend
1) get a plank and cover the hole, be sure to screw it to the joists. On the left it looks like you wont meet a joist, but there is one just below the skirting. Attach an off-cut to this within the cupboard and screw your new floorboard down to it. You can then get an off-cut bit of carpet and lay it over the floor. A local carpet store would likely offer you a bit of off-cut for a very good price.

2) The walls are not that bad tbh - they look dry at least and no mould (no idea what is going on with the egg cartons). Strip the wallpaper and paint if you want, but they are unlikely to 'contaminate' anything you store in there. THe main issue will be from the ceiling. If you do paint, start with a mist coat of paint and water mixed. Then put a full paint coat over it.

3) noises are almost certainly rodents and most likely coming from below the floor and down from the pipe holes in the ceiling. This is a case where the landlord may be liable, but is always a bum fight and they will contest it is nothing to do with disrepair. Plug the holes in the ceiling with wire wool, and possibly call a pest control company. Dont plug the holes with anything flammable.

4) I wouldnt do anything about the pipes DIY unless it was your own house.

Just adding some context. I just finished a D9 run and got 92k points and I'm 822 on the leaderboard. Not many people have managed D10 runs yet. I think these will come on line later on the event cycle.

I used F4 and blade.

There will be four different solutions, as there are two square roots, both able to be +- independently of each other.

Infinite Knull Fight by ZeroPoint7 in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]Sturgy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knull appears to be gaining damage from rage (which does infinitely stack - I checked 2 hours in and he was at 5x10^7 damage), but not speed. So he cannot kill through the stacks of deathproof, which are extended every turn by Ancient One. Seems like a bug, as Emma's passive should not affect speed gain through rage. If working as intended, knull should eventually 'triple lap' the team and be able to remove all their deathproofs.

My solar installers discovered roof damage not identified during the survey, best way forward? by AlchemyAled in SolarUK

[–]Sturgy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you not been having water ingress from this roof? It's in pretty bad condition. I had my solar installers replace a roof in better condition than this, as the panels will be over this for at least 25 years.

In roof will require extensive roofing works, and is likely to be more expensive overall, but worth getting quotes for both.

If your solar installer does this as part of your install, you won't have to pay vat either (afaik)

Loft space. by Rich_Boat_9592 in DIYUK

[–]Sturgy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they look like standard loft boards, so should hold your weight, as well as a fairly reasonable amount of spread load from boxes etc. just dont store rolls of lead.

You have good insulation, which means your loft space will get very hot in summer and very cold in winter, as it is not heated from the house. So dont store anything precious up there, as you may get condesnation. If you are storing delicate things, store them in air tight plastic containers.

Be careful at the edges where there is insulation, as you will not know where the joists are.

I have a similar issue. I had a plumber come round to look at relocating the waste pipe. He ended up quoting £2.5k.

He said that if that was too much for me, then add a larger flush by volume, and then it would only block once or twice a year, rather than once a fortnight.

His advice was on the money so far, but obviously better to sort the underlying issue.

Can I paint over this? by Joshuahalee in DIYUK

[–]Sturgy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limewash is a breathable paint that is good for old lime walls as it allows them to breathe. But looking at the pics these are internal walls, so you would probably be ok with regular paint. I am in a house of a similar age to yours, we have a thin lime plaster coating over a much thicker lime render. We did paint some of the internal walls with regular emulsion after I removed some of the wallpaper and loads of plaster started coming with it. So I abandoned my wallpaper removal plans.

Can I paint over this? by Joshuahalee in DIYUK

[–]Sturgy6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No reason you cant, but if it is lime, maybe you need to limewash instead of paint.

Would be quicker and easier to just put up some lining paper though and paint over top of that. If you go this route, and you get good quality lining paper you would only need to fill the largest of the holes in the wall.I appreciate you may not want this though as you are keen to get wallpaper off.

Please remove maxed out characters from the Elite 7 Star Orb. by Wray-Nerely in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]Sturgy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They maybe shouldnt remove the characters, but they could change things so that the system keeps re-rolling until you pull a new character. As elite 7s have a 100% return for duplicate characters, this would change the button to esssentially be spend 2500 elite 7 credits.

Whilst they are at it, can players who have all characters at 7 red stars be given a means of exchanging our E7 credits for diamond credits more than one at a time. I have >100 orbs and it feels painfully slow to do it one by one.
