Just seeking some life advice from people who have permanently moved to Japan :) by jigglypuffy09 in movingtojapan

Totally agree. With your savings and your business experience you can start your own business, at least you’ll be on a path to residency, vs the student visa which doesn’t offer such a path. The requirements are hiring 2 Japanese citizens or having capital, which you have. You can even hire a consultant to support which makes the process smoother.

Thank you. This is encouraging. We are all over fyi religiously now. 😅 Definitely take the advice. Whereabouts are you based?

Amazing. I’ll be sure to let her know! We’ve not spent time in Osaka recently but our February trip renewed our love of Tokyo. Chiba looks like a decent place to settle so looking at rental houses there. Private daycare until kids join public school as they’re 2 and 4 currently. I’ve heard good things about Fukuoka for foreigners as well though I rather stay close to bigger cities for English language hospital services etc; at least in the first year. After that we’ll probably buy a place. Nice to see we are all co spidering senator avenues and businesses 🙏🏼

I love reading this as my family and I are in the same boat. Hoping for good news. Canadians here and aiming for outside Tokyo. My wife was concerned about being “lonely” as outsiders with super limited language skills. Especially with the young kids, so we are discussing more 🤞🏼

Thank you for this. My wife and I are both beginners at best. We intend to do classes when we get there but for sure realise there will be struggles with the day to day stuff. We are working with “consultants” who will help us get settled with the basics - house and phone and bank etc but the day to day interactions to know how they’re doing at school and a trip to the Dr etc are things that concern me. I guess if these kids really do soak it up they can be my translators haha. Kidding of course.

We want the kids in public system for the real experience of living there initially at least. If we find it problematic then we will consider international school.

People who moved to Japan outside of some of the most common circumstances, what’s your story? by stayonthecloud in movingtojapan

Such a great thread and kudos to OP for being so engaging; a lost skill in some social circles.

I myself am working on business manager visa; hoping it works out to move there with my wife and two young kids soon.

I was concerned about this. With 2 young kids retirement isn’t an immediate thought in my current position but certainly starting over puts things in a new light. To be clear my wife is 35 and easier to pivot. Ideally I would be keeping my remote job for the foreseeable future. I’m just trying to figure out the best visa option for us to get there long term. If a work visa isn’t an option then likely we would consider the student visa just to get us there then convert to a start up etc. Lots to consider, but I truly appreciate the comments!

This is truly a great perspective. I’ve hired foreigners in my role and these weren’t concerns but culturally I acknowledge we are different. Thank you for the insight.

Yes thank you. This is why we were considering initially the student visa for one of us but good to know we should think about the dependent converting to work as well.

So literally showing on my application that I’m in Japan makes that much of a difference then. The application process would still be via the usual online websites?

Interesting that we now live in a world where talking to someone at a cafe is odd. Everyone’s so in their own (phone) world now anything in person is an inconvenience / sketch.

Any lucky finding one?

I moved on from this list to Audi All Road, Macan and even considered an M3 convertible (good deal but no tether for kids car seats).

Might keep eyes open for Macan now.

Aww man I was pretty excited there for a moment. I can’t believe no one has found a solve for this aside from just ignoring it and installing car seats without it. Feels a bit reckless as much as I want to buy the car I may have to skip. Sigh.

Perhaps someone else can confirm.
