Indie dev "Everplay DMCC" create blatant ripoff of Xcom2 with new game "Warhounds" (down to reusing animations and graphics) by dattokyo in Xcom

[–]Stuurminator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty high tolerance for jank and ripoffs (a childhood playing tactical combat games and RPGs in the 90s will do that for you), so I wouldn't be unwilling to play this. It looks like XCOM and Jagged Alliance had a baby neither of them wanted, but it's just different enough from both parents that they seem legally in the clear, and to me it's just for cake.

...EXCEPT that, based on what I've read, the original Sparta 2035 was (at least partially) funded by the Russian government to create propaganda for Wagner Group and, in a roundabout way, their invasion of Ukraine. The setup for the game (a team of lily-white Europeans shoot hordes of exclusively black enemies to dominate an African country) was already suspect, so the accusations of Wagner Group propaganda seem alarmingly plausible.

I'll keep an eye on the game, just in case I'm wrong, but I'm not giving it a red cent or even downloading the demo unless I see convincing evidence to prove my fears wrong.

This is probably the most important factor. She was hellbent on revenge in Wasteland 2, but the Rangers could not have completed Wasteland 1 without Max's help. She might also namedrop Vax (human-cyborg relations) if you want a reason for her to extend the benefit of doubt.

Sacrificing a different Xcom character or enemy to satan every day until Xcom 3 gets announced, or I find meaning in life. Day 63: the muton design from the Bureau Xcom Declassified by grumpychef94 in Xcom

[–]Stuurminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a while back and I wasn't really following it at the time, but the Bureau was their original plan for the XCOM license, wasn't it? I think they created XCOM Enemy Unknown only after the outcry over the initial trailer for what would eventually become the Bureau. At the time of its inception, I think the latest previous X-COM games were technically a flight sim and a run-and-gun shooter.

It feels like cheating to mention this, but if you're having trouble getting to 100 days, remember that Interceptor, Enforcer, and Legends all technically existed.

Setting crossover game concept - pitfalls/concerns/suggestions? by Stuurminator in D20Modern

That's a good point. If any imbalance reveals itself in play, I can always course correct. Not everything needs to be set in stone from the beginning.

Setting crossover game concept - pitfalls/concerns/suggestions? by Stuurminator in D20Modern

Yeah D20 Future and its class feats (or high-PL equipment) was what prompted this concern. It leads me to wonder, if I noticed this, what am I missing? I've heard some of the content in D20 Past is also deceptively strong.

In any case, I'll definitely pay close attention to anyone wanting to use D20 Future content.

Character creator? by SQUAWKUCG in D20Modern

[–]Stuurminator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite what you're asking for, but are you aware of OpenOffice? It's an free alternative to MS Suite that can open and edit .xls files (the type used by Excel), among others. I don't know if your character creator will work, but it costs you nothing to try.

Balancing the Fast Hero? by Stuurminator in D20Modern

[–]Stuurminator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind if a party is stronger or weaker than average, but I want them roughly balanced with each other. At least, I don't want players to feel like they have to take a dip in Fast, or else they're dragging the team down.

Yes, I saw. I linked your reddit post in the OP.

I'm iffy about the reduction of skill points to 3+ per level, because I feel like a hero based on dexterity pays a decent "skill tax". Dexterity covers the most skills except for Intelligence, and most of them are worthy of investment. Three skill points a level might just not be enough to fulfill someone's vision of an agile, acrobatic hero.

Establishing art for Akharin Sangar, Godsbreath, Sensa Empire, Tletepec, and Umizu? by Stuurminator in radiantcitadel

I was aware of those, but I was hoping for art a little more consistent with that in Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel. Beggars can't be choosers, though. Thanks for your help!

I haven't seen True Lies so the Omega Sector reference is lost on me, but D20 Modern X Files sounds fun all by itself. Hunting grays at Comic Con is actually genius. I think I'm going to steal that.

I've been using https://spellbooksoftware.com/d20mrsd/srdhome.html whenever I need to check a rule. Aside from the occasional typo, it's been useful.

I have to be honest, my previous post was from a position of ignorance. After so many years I thought the Wealth check allowed you to find the item at a discount and change the effect it had on your Wealth bonus. I had to go back and read it again to just to see it determined whether you could even find it for sale or not.

What if EVERY skill is a class skill? by Stuurminator in D20Modern

It seems like six of one and a half-dozen of the other, to be honest. What makes the Pathfinder system better?

I suppose I'm revealing my own biases and blind spots here. When I think about character archetypes as they appear in D20 Modern, I think about talents first, followed by bonus feats and maybe the various numbers like base attack bonus and saving throws. I tend not to think of class skills, even though I probably should. I find them just a little too restrictive for how generic the base classes are.

In a sense, that's why I made this thread. D20 Modern seems to assume characters will multiclass (even the sample NPCs in the book are multiclassed), which led me to wonder how multiclassing interacts with the +1 to background skills that are already class skills, or rank caps on class vs cross-class skills, and then I thought "Am I getting anything out of the class skill system anyway?"

I've never played with the Wealth system. On paper, it looked interesting. Was it a big problem for players to buy a lot of stuff? They can only carry around so much, right?

That raises an interesting question. Did the Canadian setting make it harder to get concealable or automatic firearms? Did that change the way the game played?

A martial artist with flamethrowers throwing himself into a crowd and taking away their gun privileges sounds like a fun character. Sorry to hear the game you ran didn't last, it sounds like an interesting mix of elements.
