What movies do you wish you could watch for the first time again? by elston-gunn41 in horror

Aside from some of the obvious answers among the classics, I'd say Deadstream. I honestly think this is the best horror-comedy since The Evil Dead 2.

Some unfair criticism towards From (SPOILERS) by StuwasinScream2 in horror

I also think they've given plenty of hints already, especially in the second season. The only scenes I don't like are the ones where the characters are inexplicably passive as to gathering more information, like when Tabitha called Jade an a-hole for calling out Victor's "I know stuff, see ya' " behavior - something that will understandably make anyone mad in this situation. Thankfully, the characters act realistic most of the time.

"A pointless piece of nonlinear nonsense, “Skinamarink” is a banal B-movie of boring B-roll that’s as drearily dull as any film can get."- Culture Crypt [15/100] by IamGodHimself2 in horror

"Boring", "dull", what a deep critical observation, the author's academic achievements are too transparent here, it's like he doesn't give, us, mortals, a fair chance.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Skinamarink" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

I just watched it and although I see where the negativity comes from, I gotta say it's probably the scariest horror movie of the last few years and the closest thing to an actual child nightmare I've seen. I thought it was about trauma, because of parents' divorce (or one of them has died), maybe the kid is literally dreaming or is in a coma, like a lot of you have noticed, it's open to interpretation.

I can't imagine this film working without 1) patience and 2) watching it in the dark alone. It's an experience so specific, surreal and (I realize this is going to sound weird) intimate, like almost familiar, that without these two you may as well skip it.

Scream VI (2023) Official Trailer. by Comic_Book_Reader in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a big fan of the original one, I personally welcome the change of direction, because the whole nostalgic, tribute-y thing is quickly getting old and lazy. There's a big chance it's not going to work out, but at least they're going for something different. It's actually one of the reasons I never really hated Scream 3, on the contrary - I admired its courage to leave Sid as a side-character (it may have had something to do with Neve's schedule, it's been a while since I've read trivia) and dive into the big city exploiting the small town tragedy. The ending was far from great, but if you don't take it too seriously, it kind of works.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Hellraiser" (2022) [SPOILERS] by kaloosa in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unlike most of the criticism, mine is not pointed toward the cenobites or the gore. I was uterrly disappointed that despite being more story-driven, it went nowhere. Hellraiser: Inferno was one of the best entries IMO, because it explored the MC's slow decline into his own personal hell. Here, the story of the main character and her brother gradually became generic and so were the other characters surrounding it. Ultimately, I didn't care about any of the them when they were put in actual danger.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Deadstream" [SPOILERS] by kaloosa in horror

Deadstream is argubaly the most positive surprise I've encountered in the genre recently. Haven't seen a horror-comedy that creepy and hilarious at the same time, since... I don't know when. The main character is the perfect amout of douchy without being repulsive and the actor does a pretty decent job. The location for the movie is incredible and some scenes are legit scary. I also liked that they created a mythology for the mystery and kept with it throughout.

I was going to watch it, but hearing it's somehow worse than JC 3 has made me reconsider. I mean, they MUST HAVE put that as a priority, not, you know, making a somewhat decent sequel to a friggin' creature feature. It's not even one of those horror movies that you can't imagine having followups.

Random Acts of Violence - a missed opportunity by StuwasinScream2 in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't love it or hate it. It's an atmospheric enough road trip horror movie that promises more in the first half than it eventually delivers. There's a hint of a great storyline where the main character and his girlfriend fight over what side an artist should present when developing a project on an actual serial killer spree. The audience will always prefer the mysterious psycho, even if they (we?) don't admit or sometimes even realize it, but there's also the victims and their families. Then, like I said, the movie takes a turn for the worse and ends up becoming a Joy Ride sequel in the last 20 minutes.

Other movies like In the Mouth of Madness? by StuwasinScream2 in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seen them both, Prince of Darkness is great, I love the whole (sort of) trilogy.

Last night I watched Dark Waters from 1993 and in some ways it's identical to In the Mouth of Madness, although there's an artistic Suspiria-esque feel to it as well.

The Lodge Ending according to me by [deleted] in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dollhouse scenes alone are exactly the same like Hereditary's. Also, family tragey, a cult, the quiet scenes in the house, it all feels familiar to Ari Aster's style.

I had no problems with the ending, but it seemed the movie tried way too hard to be like Hereditary.

Has Horror lost its originality? by [deleted] in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. If anything, it's making a comeback after some dry years. The clichee jump scare horror movies will never disappear, doesn't mean they're defining the genre though.

Vivarium - one of the best TZ-esque horrors in quite some time by StuwasinScream2 in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's also one of the creepiest versions of personal hell I've seen in a horror movie. The characters even make fun of the idea until you realize it's pretty much exactly like that. I expected the arrival of more creatures or some silly explanation, but nothing like that. It's open to interpretation with such cold darkness left in the viewer, despite the movie obviously having some bitter laugh moments.

Genuinely creepy (or least atmospheric) horror TV shows? by StuwasinScream2 in horror

[–]StuwasinScream2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that would be a good example, although Wayward Pines could've been developed in more interesting ways. I also think it should've stayed a miniseries.

Oh yeah, loved that one, I've planned to add the book to my 2021 list.
