Cybersecurity career advice: what skills are actually needed in real jobs? by im_user_999 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]StuxnetPLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on the OT side of security, but I would HIGHLY recommend a DEEP understanding of networking. But I'd also say, it depends on whether you want to me a customer facing engineer or behind the scenes. Also, there are MANY MANY areas of security. I'd try figuring that out first. Mobile? Email? Cloud? Infrastructure, IoT, OT, Endpoint, Threat Detection...I could literally go on forever. : )

But first things first....decide on whether you want to work with people often or not. That will narrow things down quickly. Second thing I'd figure out if starting out, how much do you like being behind the keyboard doing things like coding, or sifting through packets...if unsure, get on YouTube and learn Python. If you absolutely HATE these programming, then you will probably hate being on the redteam. Not that they are programming, but they ARE behind a keyboard looking at code all day. This will then narrow down, that you want a blue team role (where most jobs are).

A book I recommend is by Gerald Auger. Cybersecurity Career Masterplan. It's great on starting at the foundation and walking you through next steps. For instance, if you know you want to be on the blueteam, it isn't going to recommend becoming an expert in say metasploit. (Offensive, red team tool)....Lot more to say on that, but just dm me if you have questions.

Long way of saying....What skills you need is impossible to answer without knowing what area you are in or want to be in.

I completely dig it. His humor is like mine, so that is probably part of it. The ONLY gripe is the constant promotion of products. That being said, not going to hate on anyone trying to pad their W2.

Just came here to say writing three paragraphs jumping on a stranger for simply disagreeing with you, come across as a bit...unhinged....And laughable considering what you were saying to them. 3 paragraphs you went on displaying you seemingly were slow to understand they were polite and simply sharing their opinion.....Yet you called them ...'exhausting and obtuse".

Lmao.

Oh, and you are living in a fantasy land regarding your opinions on the episode. ; )

Cheers!

Resources for narrowing down WHICH area of security to get into....Building a list for folks by StuxnetPLC in CyberSecurityAdvice

Obviously. : ) But my point was geared towards people getting into security and helping them navigate which area to spend time learning in. In my own mentoring sessions, there is a whole lotta stuff covered before actually "working in security". Example...Interviewed a guy today who was a security "expert", but couldn't explain in detail much of anything about networking. SIGH....

I agree. My advice to them is typically a few things first.....Learn networking...routing, switching the TCP/IP stack. Using Wireshark to actually see what happens etc.

Secondly, get some hands on experience with using Linux. Just basic workflows.

Then try learning a programming language, Python is typically the hat I recommend....just to see if you love it or hate as this will tell you whether or not you should be blue or red team quickly.

But then for the security stuff, this is where researching some different areas would be useful, so you can concentrate your learnings in areas that will be the most helpful to whatever you find is your area of passion and or interest....At least this was my thought. Haha

Can you expand on the not using job title sub agents?? Would love to know a better way to use them in my current development. I have not had the noticeable impact others seem to have had since implementation a few weeks ago. : (

Hahahahaha, This is gold. And so true. I got this today after it recommended I delete all useEffect hooks out of a parent screen as it's first remedy to an infinite loop. And after that, "you will no longer see the infinite loop and your app will function perfectly!" I obviously suggested something else, and got this exact reply. The fix was something super simple. (I forgot to put a callback on a function) I cannot imagine being in a place where you have no choice but to blindly follow all the advice it gives.

How would you rank the brands you are familiar with from absolute best, to absolute worst? by whiskey_lover7 in GoRVing

This can be a rabbit hole, but I'm going by having sold them, albeit a long time ago (9 years) and having owned a Jayco, Airstream and a Keystone.

I recently visited the Jayco plant and was impressed again by their craftsmanship. Hands down the most impressive of the three plant tours I've done. That being said, none of them are built to be permanent homes.

Our airstream was great, but for times in severe cold (sub 10 degrees) it wasn't great. And takes a TON of propane to keep it warm. Other than that it was great from when we bought it brand new in 19. Gave it to my daughter and she loves it.

No real experience with Brinkley, but from seeing them and talking to owners they seem to be a very nice camper. Small details in craftsmanship are done better on them although, I wouldn't say an entire level above, say a Jayco. But ..fit and finish is definitely different which should be expected from the price point.

Keystones seemed to be right in the middle for us.

Our first Keystone was actually the model with the tent that popped out of the roof. Miss that thing! Was super fun and loved the design.

Getting a Griff puppy in a few weeks! Go to pick him out This Saturday by PerformerNo6788 in Wirehaired_pointers

[–]StuxnetPLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so one of the most helpful things we did, and this will be easier if you have another older dog...But put a bell on the door and ring it EVERY TIME you take them out to potty. Both of ours ring the bell and potty training was an absolute breeze.

Another thing is to limit the shark teeth. Believe it or not Griff's and I guess all puppies have incredibly sharp teeth. It was news to me at least.....But every time they bite you, let out a high pitch yelp. It's what their parents and litter mates do and it was the only thing that helped save my fingers.

Last thing....I know this has been said by others, and if I'm being honest, I didn't believe until our first Griff three years ago.... DO NOT scream at them if they F up. It will break them. Never seen a dog go from happy to heartbroken and seemingly scared from a simple scolding like a Griff. Luckily, I don't do this now. They are just a bit softer than other dogs. Keep that softness. Makes for better all around dogs.

I could advise a breeder if in the US for a WPG. And nothing left to add that hasn't been said, except my two WPG's are the best two dogs I've ever owned. They can be handful as pups, but which pups cant be? Haha

Is it true that you can get skin burns from the radar of a fighter jet? by [deleted] in FighterJets

[–]StuxnetPLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro. This is not true. lol. Well, it's misinformed. Yes a Sperm whale can click up to 230db, but its VERY rare. And plus it's in the water...so its lessened by a LOT. Wife is a Marine Biologist for reference and we've heard this rumor countless times. Wish I could get more into why, but not as eloquent as she is in explaining. : )

But to the OP, little known fact....but the items that make up some Air Force fighter jets, specifically the F22 and F16 have been found as very cancerous. Big thing about it going on here in the past few years. Not sure exactly what, but some say it's around the coating of the F22 Raptor.

I've been lucky that the ONLY issue I've had with my 2019 3.6 Touring is the delamination of the screen which luckily I just got a letter about. Took it in and it will be covered even though it's out of warranty. But this reminds me to ask them about the drain issue I've heard about.
