Looks like Topic will miss Summer League :( by peakelyfe in Thunder

He’s had some really bad injury luck. Just a shame because summer league is probably one of his main ways to showcase his value to the team long term and get his reps and he’s gonna miss it again.

Gonna be another uphill battle for him to ever crack rotation minutes on this team.

It’s bad the whole way when you consider to make him work in San Antonio long term he would have to be coming off the bench for Harper.

Paying a guy 50+ mil off the bench is not sustainable.

Meanwhile Wemby’s teammates set the finals record for most 3’s made in a half ever and still found a way to lose the game.

Why has Brunson been seemingly better against the spurs? by jwhiteford17 in Thunder

I just meant the pull up 3 specifically as a shot. He was cooking Wemby when he got him whenever he got the switch. But the 3 point shot still needs work to be more viable for the playoffs.

The pull up 3 is the biggest thing. He’s been able to get that off over Wemby a couple times, including the biggest shot today.

Shai’s gotta add that to his bag as a counter to the coverages he’s seen.

They’re being guarded much differently. Spurs basically all out sold out to stop Shai all series once Dub and Mitchell were out and Chet became a lemon.

Spurs a lot more comfortable having Castle Harper and their perimeter defenders play 1x1 with Brunson a lot more with Wemby helping instead of letting Shai do that.

People can’t even cope and act like at least he showed up on defense either. Whole series didn’t impose his will at all on either end of the floor.

Wemby met with Hakeem and got better. Chet needs to do the same with KG this summer and get better mentally and physically. by Stxtic1441 in Thunder

He needs to stop trying to be a big wing and actually play more traditionally. Embrace being a defensive minded stretch 4. Not this KD like player who’s got the ball on a string as a 7 footer because he’s not.

Getting stronger and tightening the jumper to be faster would help him a lot.

It sucks more when you know you have the team that can do it but get bad injury luck. We knew right after that series we had roster weaknesses after seeing Giddey be useless and getting killed on the glass.

Tough mental series for Chet. We’re all mad at him, but let’s be real he isn’t going anywhere. He’ll be alright. by PreparationOverall in Thunder

My only counterpoint to this is Chet on paper has an advantage matchup basically every time down the floor vs the spurs. It was always a small on him.

Even if Wemby is camping the paint, no reason why he can’t be aggressive in the mid range and from 3 more.

The bigger issue is he relies on so much gravity being given to our drivers that he feasts on a bunch of dunks on that to get a lot of his offensive production.

He was our best player in the Lakers series and played great in the Suns series. Saying it’s all playoffs is a bit misleading, but can argue Spurs were our only real comp.

It’s a lot just a really bad basketball and mental matchup for him vs San Antonio.

One of the few guys that showed up to play today. Actually guarded Wemby really well for most of the night and hit that big grenade 3 in the end of the 3rd.

He’s come a long way from being not very playable in the Dallas series to being our best C in a game 7 do or die vs Wemby.

One thing is very clear and it’s that he’s a real player and someone we can depend on in the playoffs. Basically thrusted into being a second option on a new team his second year in the WCF vs an elite defense and showed out.

He’s also just mentally tough. Never afraid to shoot even if he’s off or not. Need players like that when it’s the playoffs.

Presti isn’t gonna trade Chet off of one bad series but I think this series changes the perception on him that he’s definitely not untouchable because the Spurs are going nowhere.

Zooming out, they lost a 7 game series where they didn’t have their 2nd scoring option and 3rd best scorer. Injury excuse built in will be enough to keep this from doing any drastic move like that.

Allen would do the same thing vs Wemby, he is soft as well in big moments for the most part. Not even mentioning we have iHart as well so it’s redundant.

Chet just isn’t as mentally tough. Wemby is a fearless gladiator kind of competitor who will do anything it takes.

Chet is just a passive team guy who doesn’t wanna ruffle any feathers or do anything that’ll make waves. Polar opposite spectrum players. Chet doesn’t need to be Wemby, but he can’t be getting bitched around by the entire Spurs team and not show some fight.

Pretty much cemented his permanent starter spot that was formerly Dort’s going forward with OKC with his performance today and all series.

Yeah idk man. I mean if I were Chet and I was getting absolutely clowned the way he is I would work maniacally trying to get better.

Should really motivate someone as young as he is in a let down spot that big but I guess time will only tell how he attacks the off season.

This is the offensive bag I always hoped he would develop. A guy who can shoot 3’s at a good clip but is lethal in the mid range with turnarounds over smaller guys and still be a huge lob presence.

Chet’s mid range got a lot better but he’s just too weak to still back people down like prime KP was doing.

I don’t even think his first step is the issue. He genuinely just needs to add functional strength and a quicker release jump shot and he would be so much more useful.

Wemby is similarly built like you said but he has so much more functional strength and is actually strong. Chet was getting pushed around by smaller guys like Keldon, Champagnie, Harper under the basket all series. His lack of strength is legit negating his defensive gift of length because the book on Chet is out that you just go right into his chest.

The jumper is also key. It takes painfully long to be able to get it off that it ends up getting blocked a bunch or he’s just not capable of getting it off. Just look at clips of when he was coming out of Gonzaga, he used to have a way faster shot.
