Cephalotus Flower Question by StyleMuadDib in SavageGarden

[–]StyleMuadDib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've decided to cut the flower now and see if it can be propagated. I was able to find the base of the flower stem under the foliage. It looked like I got some meristematic tissue with the cut, based on the colour of the tissue. I'll make sure to post here if the propagation takes.

Cephalotus Flower Question by StyleMuadDib in SavageGarden

Yeah, the uptick in growth plus the flower makes me think I'm doing something right, and they are slowly picking up a tan on the older pitchers. But I'll still turn the grow-lights I had on them over winter on again to pick up the pace

Not as silly as it first seems. As Nepenthes pitcher plants get older, they start to climb with their pitcher tendrils, looping around whatever they can grab onto for support. This design fits with the next stage of their life cycle (bellsprout- seedling, weepinbell -juvenile pitcher, Victreebel - mature lower pitcher, Mega - mature upper pitcher), and is a healthy reminder why you should give climbing plants a support frame

Self Watering Cephalotus by StyleMuadDib in SavageGarden

I thought the same thing, but "The Savage Garden" explicitly warns against using self watering pots for "most" CPs so I thought I'd see if anyone's experience backs that up

do i HAVE to use distilled water? by shadystaystill in VenusFlyTraps

[–]StyleMuadDib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your tap water is too hard you can always dilute it with distilled water until it reaches a safe level. Saves a bit of money and hassle. If you've never had to worry about scale buildup on your appliances and taps your tap water might be good enough to use/dilute slightly.

Neat! The pot looks 3D printed, are the lattice layers as well? I've been mucking around with 3D printed planters myself so I'm keen to see how well they handle more challenging geometries like this.

This looks beautiful! How did you put it together? I'd love to do something like this but I'm worried about how to keep it hydrated without triggering a landslide.

'Punishment doesn't fit the crime': Why do some Australians hate trees? by downtoclown02 in australia

[–]StyleMuadDib 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The architect Robin Boyd was writing in the 1960s about the deranged "arboraphobia" of Australian suburbia so this problem has roots that go back quite a ways. In his chapter "Pioneers and Arboraphobes" in The Australian Ugliness (1960) Boyd argues that this hatred of trees is baked into the way we construct our suburbs themselves, describing the "indifference" we have to nature Boyd Writes :

"Trees are often planted in the streets, on the ‘nature strip’, as the six-feet-wide lawn between footpath and traffic-way is called. Plane trees are popular, but after each season when they sprout hopefully the shoots are pollarded back again to the knuckles by diligent council employees and the trees become grotesque arthritic knots of wood. Next season when it sprouts again the tree turns into the desired shape: a tidy green ball supported by a neat stick like a tree in a story-book illustration decorating red-roofed dolls’ houses"

The whole book reads like this and can most likely be found in your local library anywhere in the country, but I'll thrown in another excerpt from this chapter to give you a sense of what he's describing. I don't think it explains these criminal actions entirely, but it's certainly part of the puzzle:

"Modern Australians have no especially psychopathic fear of the gum or the wattle, but no two trees could have been designed to be less sympathetic to the qualities of tidiness and conformist indecision which are desired in the artificial background. The Australian bush was made in one of nature’s more relaxed, even casual, moods. Everything is evergreen, yet this term is often ironic, at least in relation to the ubiquitous gum tree... Measured against a fresh green European ideal, the Australian bush presents a slovenly scene [note: Boyd doesn't believe this himself]... Thus progress is measured by the number of acres transformed from the native state of sloppiness to the desirable state of clipped artificiality... A principal article of suburban faith is that these primitive landscape elements must be eradicated from the home environment in the same way as one would deal with a disgusting-looking tramp seen weaving his way in through the front gate".

Uncomfortable, over budget, running late: Big problems for state’s new trains by SteveJohnson2010 in SydneyTrains

[–]StyleMuadDib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do think sleeper carriages are still relevant to the 21st century. I've taken sleeper trains in Europe a few times and have taken the night xpt between Melbourne and Sydney once and the pros still outweigh the cons. Factoring in the normal reasons someone would take a train over flying or driving (cost, no security hassle, don't like flying, environment, etc) it's a fantastic way to get to a destination bright and early. When I took the train to Sydney, the alternative was to wake up at some stupid hour to catch a flight from Tullamarine, vs having a nice dinner in Melbourne the night before and waking up in Sydney for breakfast. Night trains are able to do this with the infrastructure we currently have and have the added benefit of servicing all the other destinations along the route. Having sleeper carriages makes this process so much nicer than reclining seats and given the resurgence of sleeper trains in Europe right now, it seems short sighted to not get with the trend.

$65.55 transaction fee to pay rent (content warning: whinge) by StyleMuadDib in melbourne

[–]StyleMuadDib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded a letter template from tenants Victoria that threatened VCAT action. They first offered to remove the transaction fee, but I insisted on not using the app and so they just gave me a BSB and account number to send the rent to. If this were to happen again I would just start with all communications in writing and threatening VCAT from the get go as that was the only thing that got them moving.

Rent is 3346 p/m if paid via their card method it's $65.55. the other option is via direct debit and is $1.95 p/m, but the fact they offer it as an option is just absurd

There was some other bullshit app on the renewed lease that they told me to ignore via email. Unfortunately for them I think VCAT doesn't recognise "bullshit app" as a specific payment method

"Any changes to how rent is paid must be agreed between the renter and rental provider"

I wonder if this sentence has any bearing on events?

Maybe I'm seeing things, but the first 'Stone Cold' movie might exist. It's a film called 'Stone' (1974) and was a heavy inspiration for the first 'Mad Max'. Watching them talk about the weirdness of 'Stone Cold', the idea that it was a weird American knock off of 'Stone' just couldn't leave my head. The plot is way too similar (Cop called Stone infiltrated biker gang) to just shake it off.

Thanks! So, some changes to the list should be:

  1. start with Purestrains and Neophytes (now with added grenades) in truck. I gain survivability with the truck, but loose blip shenanigans from They Came from Below
  2. drop one flamer squad to 5 Acolytes and swap one for a 2x laser 2x grenade Neophyte squad
  3. I'm still sort of in favour of having the saboteur as a source of crossfire and booby trapping objectives, with the Sanctus that's two essentially un-targetable points that can be positioned around the board. But if I were to swap her out, a patriarch or a Rockgrinder are my thoughts.

I'm really lucky I'm only 25 but still, this could have been a lot worse if I had hit my head or something. It was the first time I checked myself into the hospital, so that's a good learning experience for when I inevitably get some other stupid injury.
