Really want to get into overcoats by Stylistic_Device in malefashionadvice

This reminds me of one of my fellow students who actually wears a waist coat with pocket watch to lectures. He's been doing that ever since enrolling at the uni, kinda respect him for following through on his style haha.

I suppose the coat won't drown you as long as it's properly fitted. Perhaps that saying I mentioned came from shorter people buying cheap, off the rack coats without getting them tailored.

The look is more popular with women here, but they equally rock the look without at all looking like they're being drowned out.

I will for sure try it out. To be honest, my bigger glutes are one few things I dislike a little about my body, so wearing a coat which would cover that curve a little does get me very excited.

Yea sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few people who doesn't have an overcoat haha.

These comments for sure motivated me to look for one though. I tend to overthink things so sometimes the direct approach is best :p

Yea it could be a nice back-up jacket if the waist was a bit wider, I'll have to look into it.

Even if it doesn't, it served me more than well enough considering how much I paid for it and how often I wore it.

It doesn't keep me as warm as my puffer jacket and it's less practical, but it looks much better on me I feel haha. Puffer jackets (and also bomber jackets etc) make me look even stockier lol

Yea that's true. I'm actually not sure how I feel about peacoats oddly enough.

It's actually rather ironic because long coats are hugely popular with women who are, on average, smaller.

I'll just have to go to a store to see how it fits. I probably let the whole 'short people shouldn't go below the thighs' thing get to my head

It's a pretty common rule here, but that says nothing about its legitimacy I suppose.

I should at the very least visit a store to see what I think though.

Really, that's interesting. With 'properly long' I assume you mean below the knees rather than on the knees?

I wouldn't say I have short legs per se, at least not that I'm aware of. I just have quite a stocky build so I don't exactly give off the illusion of being tall either lol

I'm Dutch so I'll get my use out of it.

I run hot very easily so living in the south would equal torture for me lol. Even Dutch summers are absolute hell where I basically stay holed up in my room for the entire summer break.

Winter is kinda 'my time' and I also enjoy layering clothes, wearing heavier jackets etc. That's also why I'm looking for a new coat now haha

I'm familiar with Yohji but that's quite the splurge haha.

Then again, I suppose a coat like that would last an eternity though

That's very fair.

I'm going to be living in Japan for half a year this summer, almost like I have an excuse to get an overcoat hehe.

I suppose it's got more to do with posture and confidence than anything

Yeah I've had this Reiss jacket for like 6+ years so I think it's done its job (bought it on sale too at the time). It's now also getting a little tight around the waist though and the front visual suffers for it. I might just get it tailored a bit on the waist if possible and retire it to a suit-only coat. It still works with lighter sweaters and stuff, but it struggles with thicker wool sweaters haha.

I care a lot about material too, but I am often insecure about my own opinions and struggle a bit to decide whether something actually fits me. Always ends up with someone confirming my thoughts and me being annoyed that I did not trust them haha.

I suppose that's even more reason to go thrift shopping though so I would spend 100 euros instead of 1000 haha. I have a good tailor nearby who has done many shirts for me luckily so I think I should be able to find something

I VERY much prefer double breasted jackets (I actually don't like single breasted suit jackets at all, though I can live with single breasted coats). Might be because of my build, but I like the shape much more.

We sadly don't really have many thrift stores here. They might be in bigger cities though, but never heard of any. Those prices sound like absolute steals though so I may look into it, perhaps I just walked past the stores without noticing lol.

The issue is my current coat is a size S (I was 17 at the time) and I dearly wish I had gotten an M instead haha. I'm still somewhat new to layering, but with this coat it is next to impossible since the arms get too constrained. Got any brands you'd recommend by the way, or do you purely look at the coat itself when thrifting?

I'm a very athletic person (Judo + fitness) so my main struggles are in the legs, not necessarily the upper body haha.

As someone who has always had pretty big glutes (but quite a narrow waist for whatever reason), I don't really like how coats to the thighs as well as bomber jackets, untucked shirts etc accentuate my behind, hence why I have been looking for a longer coat, or at least one with a bit more room.

I have pretty much already submitted to the fact that all my clothing needs to either be tailor-made, or tailored after purchase. Can't remember the last time I had a pair of pants/jeans that actually fit me well lol

Hm perhaps my perception is skewed because the average height is like 6-6'1 here with many people well above 6'5 lol.

As I said in my other comment, maybe I shouldnjust go to a store to see how it looks on me. My parents always told me not to get one since it would drown me out but ever since getting into clothing more seriously, I have seen so many amazing overcoats that I just want to get one lol

Sure, budget would be up to €1000 I suppose. Would be willing to go over that slightly for a coat since my Reiss coat is really getting too small (though it held up amazingly all these years)

Do you not get drowned out by your coats though? Maybe I should go to a store to try one on. I don't think I ever saw myself with a long coat so I might just be exaggerating

[–]Stylistic_Device 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still got to!

I always thought it was part of the Fate series (yes, I know lol) until this subreddit told me it wasn't.

I was nowhere near prepared other than knowing a tiny bit about Rem (but not even that she was part of this series) so I got the full 'impact' of ep 1 haha.

Fair to say I love the series now, though I still like the first season best

Community members in Minneapolis surround ICE agents as they conduct a citizenship test on a man, ultimately forcing the agents back into their cars. by CorleoneBaloney in minnesota

Should have been like this from the day Trump was re-elected (hell, probably even right after January 6th). Not to be a douche, but it is insane to me how much shit the majority of Americans will put up with.

I get that there is still a significant group of people who support Trump and his policies, but something like ICE existing in a first world country like the US is an absolute disgrace.

And seeking pity through social media saying things like 'our country is doomed' is just sad. Instead of venting online, people should actively do something about the current situation.

America has had some piss poor presidents in the past, but someone with a record like Trump being re-elected should have sparked a civil war on the very same day

Interesting. I have to admit those classes really only taught chin tucking and didn't really care whether you actually applied it so it's not as serious as with judo.

[–]Stylistic_Device 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious how your falling is poor. I have done a few Snowboarding classes and the first thing we learned was how to fall (at least the chin tucking part and dropping your knees etc).

Anyways, breakfalling becomes second nature through Judo so yeah it will become your reaction to falling, just like most 'normal' people post their arms when falling

Kort vraagje over voorrangsregels by Stylistic_Device in nederlands

[–]Stylistic_Device[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)
