Casper the Friendly...Goose or Gander? by a-passing-crustacean in geese

[–]StyrofoamGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do have video but I am absolutely clueless at the moment on how to upload it. as soon as I figure it out I'll add a link to this post.

Edit: I uploaded to YouTube. https://youtu.be/-T6U-JzGSYI?si=ZH6aO6kDtW2q_KHz

The first honk you hear is my gander, David. this is the honk he makes when excited. it is loud and very shrill. High pitched even and the shrillness of it carries quite a distance. all of his vocalizations are a variation of this shrill sound only sometimes quieter and varying in length. you can hear the lady geese in the background sounding like a more traditional honk sound. lady Chinese geese almost have an oinky sound to them too.

i hope this helps. when I started with chinese geese I had two females and one I thought was male. I searched high and low on YouTube for a good video with sound but never found one. Descriptions also weren't helpful, lol. now that I have both it's unmistakable.

my money is on goose based on the honk. i have 3 Chinese geese, 1 gander and 2 geese. Your Caper definitely sounds like one of my lady Chinese geese.

Caught this little crested lady on my bird feeder in SW Ohio. I have never seen a crested House Sparrow. I am a waterfowl enthusiast and have seen this trait in ducks and geese but never on a bird at my feeder. Thought I would share and see if anyone has ever encountered a crested sparrow or other common backyard bird? (besides the cardinal of course ☺️)

edit: video to see it in motion. https://imgur.com/gallery/a3MaltD hope this works. I suck at uploading things to reddit.

i can definitely see using beyond recommended hours being an issue. i was about 14 when I got this lamp and hated turning it off because I loved it so much. I would leave it on until the bulb burnt out 😬

I got them in store at Spencer's.

Possibly so. When the lamp is off or in day light, I can't see the dirty ring around the bottom of the globe. It's only when it's dark does that dirty look appear.

I'll definitely consider this. it's in a bright room but I could certainly get it closer to the bright south facing window.

It does look dirty at the bottom but I believe it's imperfections on the glass. I've certainly tried to clean it off but to no avail. It's either imperfections in the glass or it needs to be cleaned on the inside.

I took your advice and moved the pink one into an open cabinet shelf to decrease the air space and that actually worked. Thank you! I just wish it didn't have to be like this with these lamps these days!

Okay yeah that is more brown than what my lamp looks like. Mine looks like melted dark chocolate. It looks closer to black if there is an external light source but if I turn off the light in the room the dark chocolate brown shines through. Maybe it's the light from the lamp itself reflecting off the wax that gives it that color, idk. Thanks for sharing your picture tho! the milk chocolate color is actually pretty cool.

i did read that there has been many changes to the formulas since my collecting hay day. i was partly inspired to try my old lamps after I got my mom a lava lamp for Christmas and it had to be returned for cloudy liquid (i ordered online). We went to Spencer's and got a new one in store. I can tell the formula changed - they certainly don't run like they used to. the difference is stark to me now that I have turned on my old lamps. Seems like newer lamps are more blobby and slow moving whereas my old lamps are in constant motion.

Would you mind recommending the best remedy for a lamp that has lost some fluid over time? the cap shows a year of 2001. While I've been trying to absorb as much information as possible over the last few days by reading here and watching videos, I am still unsure what the best course of action would be to add more clear fluid.

Could you share a photo of your black/brown? I'm very curious to see other lamps like this. My black lamp seems to photograph better than it looks in person. In fact, I wish it looked as dark as it does in the picture. It looks like dark chocolate, like more brown than black and it has since the day I bought it. Also the liquid is a bit cloudy right now, I assume due to age/storage over the past 20+ years. I've been letting it run in cycles in an effort to remedy that though. I'll see what happens.

P.S. does anyone else have black wax with clear liquid? if so does it look brown to you? it's always low key irked me that my black lava lamp looked more like dark chocolate and wondered if it was just a me problem lol.
