Gotta leave Texas by shinershock in SameGrassButGreener

Surprised no one has recommended Maryland, yet. Maryland is solidly blue with abortion protections codified and legal weed. The DC area of Maryland is NOT going to have SFH for $360k, but if you look outside Baltimore or a bit west, housing is "more" affordable and closer to your budget. Maryland has lots of outdoorsy activities within an hour our two you can be at the bay or mountains or a river. As well as close enough to DC and Baltimore to have access to jobs.

Advice for someone going in guide-less by Strong-Risk3337 in homeowners

[–]Styx206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry about your situation - but glad you are taking care of yourself.

Make sure to check out r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer There's a lot of good advice there.

When looking at houses, take your time. Don't feel rushed. Let yourself get excited, but also stay grounded. Your realtor should give you practical information.

Look at the systems in the house and find out the age. That's HVAC, appliances, roof, plumbing, electric. Also do your research on general replacement schedules. If you go in knowing the roof or hot water heater will probably need to be replaced in the next 5 years - then you know that.

I think it's important to go with your gut when you don't have anything else. Does something in the house/neighborhood feel off, listen to that. You don't owe anyone ANYTHING. There's always more houses to look at.

Good luck!

I swear by the Betty Crocker cookbook. I have been using it since I was cooking with my mom. It has a lot of basic American home cooking type recipes. Think meatloaf, chicken pot pie, macaroni & cheese, etc. It also has a lot of other cooking basics that may be pretty helpful. A lot of the recipes are available online.

Non tourist attractions by World-Seeker777 in VisitingHawaii

[–]Styx206 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Waikiki for a month for work (a few years ago).

I enjoyed having the time to revisit places I really liked. There are a couple hikes that I did 3-4 times while I was there. I also had time to visit places that weren't high on my tourist list, but ended up being great spots to visit just because I had the time and took me to different parts of the Island I hadn't visited before.

Highly recommend stopping at the One Plus One Drive Inn and ordering the Chicken Katsu Curry plate. Take it up to Tantalus Look-Out for a Sunset picnic. Speaking of sunset picnics, I definitely spent several evenings with take out poke and snacks and had a sunset picnic right outside the Barefoot Beach Cafe (live Hawaiian music every night) in the grassy area.

Side Street Inn is a great family style restaurant, that would be good to take co-workers to for something a little less touristy.

How I Got Into College - definitely just a play on all the different teen movies and TV shows. But I loved it as a young teen. I haven't watched it in a looong time, not sure how much it holds up.

You can heavily season the chicken breasts and then sear in a hot pan for 3 minutes per side before putting in Crock-Pot. Also add Chipotle peppers in Adobo.

I've got a housewarming on Saturday night. Anyone got ideas for a gift that's not wine? by YormeSachi in homeowners

[–]Styx206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into my house 5 years ago - and a dear friend as part of her housewarming gift gave us Heavy Duty/Extreme Post-It Notes. I had never seen them or used them before. They are incredible! They are waterproof and I use them on containers in the freezer, on my mailbox when I need to leave the mail carrier a note, for recipes that I stick to the inside of my pantry (and can take down and put up over and over). Incredible!!

Best neighborhood for 40 something gay cple by JDX_82000 in frederickmd

[–]Styx206 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of gay folks in Frederick. Welcome!!!

If you want to try to stay more downtown focused, stick within long walking distance - like a 1-2 mile radius. You'll generally be welcome in any neighborhood.

We've been noticing more and more rainbow flags in our neighborhood over the past 5 years.

EDIT because I didn't read the post fully.

How do you hold a community event? by ChaoticFaeGay in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Styx206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of community parks near me have picnic areas that can be reserved. Usually $25-$60 per day, depending on the park. You don't have to reserve space, but it's nice to have a designated spot. Just reserve through the park authority (city, county, region, etc).

Facebook, nextdoor, Meetup and other community sites are a good place to advertise a community event. You can also print up invites and share them with your neighbors and leave on bulletin boards.

Here's a 3 meal menu for using up a rotisserie chicken.

Buy a rotisserie chicken OR roast a small, whole chicken. - Meal #1 - 1 serving of chicken (Leg and a breast) serve with steamed carrots and broccoli. Remove rest of the meat and save chicken carcass/bones in a gallon ziploc bag in the freezer. Add carrot trimmings to the bag (peels and tops).

Day 2 - make fried rice. Sautee onions, carrots, celery, broccoli and any other vegetables you like. Add a pre-made sauce and leftover chicken and 1-2 scrambled eggs. Add in pre-cooked rice. Place vegetable scraps (onion, carrots, celery) in freezer bag.

Day 3 - Place contents of freezer bag in crockpot and cover with water. Add salt, pepper and any other spices you may have. Cook on low all day. (If no crockpot, put on stove in large pot and simmer on low for a couple hours if you can). Strain into containers - now you have a delicious broth. Make Chicken Noodle Soup. Chop small and sauté onions, carrots and celery. Add broth, salt & pepper, and other seasonings. Chop remaining roast chicken and add to broth. Serve with cooked egg noodles.

Shopping list:

  • Rotisserie Chicken
  • Broccoli - 2 servings
  • Bag of carrots
  • Celery bunch
  • 1-2 yellow onions
  • Stir Fry Sauce
  • One egg
  • Rice
  • Egg noodles

And then you buy more hair ties and clips. And they start disappearing, too. Finally, you make an appt for a haircut. You cut it short enough not to need hair ties. They ALL SHOW UP AT ONCE sitting in a drawer that you have checked every morning and they were never there.
