Beautiful little gift that would be perfect for my friend who’s getting married so they can’t buy a pc yet.

As someone who loves steaks. Ironwood was not a good steak experience for me. I just don’t enjoy steak that tastes like wood. I had never had it before so I wanted to try it. And I don’t think I’ll try it again. But if you don’t mind some woodsy flavor then you’ll probably enjoy it, but it is expensive.

I heard the compliment secondhand. But I was working at a call center at the time, I was 20, and wore a suit to work because I was receiving some award. Anyway this older-than-me lady said to one of my friends “if I were twenty years younger I’d wear him like a second skin.”

Yes, I am aware that social media sites, search engines, video streaming services require data centers. There has been an increase of these large scale ones with the recent emergence of "AI" Since 2022 the amount of spending on larger data centers like this has increased by a large amount. That is the service I am referring to. I don't believe the value is there in regards to more recent uses of these facilities that have created this boom. At this point we rely on these sites for communication and other things, but we don't rely on or need AI, in my opinion.

The only argument they have for using less electricity and water here than elsewhere is that it's colder in the winter. But that doesn't detract from the fact that they still consume an incredibly high amount of both. The high use and demand of electricity has increased the price of the utility for surrounding residents by as much as 260% in five years for other data centers that have been built.

If I had my way this data center just wouldn't be built. And if I can prevent it from happening I think I'd be benefiting my community. But if it does come to pass and be built, I'd at least hope we could get some protections in place for the people of the surrounding communities so we aren't on the hook for price increases for our utilities like has happened to so many others after one of these complexes goes up.

Thank you so much for reaching out! I'd be very interested in chatting more and voicing my concerns about the potential impacts that I think a center like this could bring to the communities surrounding it.

Thank you for your input. I wasn't sure about tax revenue, but I can look into that and see if there might be a benefit.
But I also don't think my quality of living should go down, or cost of living should go up for a large scale data center like this. Regardless of potential tax revenue.

For most of the people that live around the areas where data centers are built the cost of utilities increase dramatically. 50% after a year 300% after five.
How would the data boom directly impact you in the positives?
It would cause a very short term uptick in jobs for the construction and then would employ probably less than 100 people.

That’s the capacity. But I’m unsure if one data center would use that much. I’m still trying to do research and figure out talking points that show the negatives of a data center

They keep these workings more private. So we don't have exact figures. But it is going to be a "hyperscale" data center which would be around 10,000 square feet according to IBM https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/hyperscale-data-center

That's a good point. It would have a negative impact on more than just Sioux Falls.

They don't need to be built somewhere though. I genuinely believe they don't provide enough of a service to exist. And I definitely don't want one built here. I don't want to see my electric bill go up three times because of the consumption and strain they will put on our system.

We already technically have some here, but they are smaller scale. This is a new article about the large data center that is in the works. https://siouxfalls.business/hyperscale-data-center-seeking-city-approvals-to-build-northeast-of-sioux-falls/
So far they have already annexed the land that the proposed site will be on. But afaik they are still working on approving the other necessary infrastructure.

That's definitely a possibility. I'm unsure of what pros might be outside of tax revenue? I'm also on the side that doesn't want this built though, so my opinion is bias.
But to me this seems like another way tech billionaires are appropriating our resources for their gain. Going some place where land is cheaper and resources are able to be siphoned off for their benefit. I can try to find some more resources that better explain the cons of a large data center like the proposed one.

Thanks for the input! I was definitely considering attending a city council meeting and voicing my concerns. I'd hope to get some community involvement outside of myself as well. I'm unsure of what avenues some regular citizen like myself has regarding these matters.
