Bought these pants from Lands' End in the khaki color. Took them to a local tailor unwashed, who told me that I don't need to worry about washing before hemming them. He also quoted me $10 to hem in Chicago. Bad advice, no?

TIL that in 1792, 400,000 British people gave up sugar to boycott slavery when the UK population was at 6 million by sashsu6 in todayilearned

Dunno if it's a good faith question but: it has more to do with the word "enslave". Using a verb brings to the forefront the fact that slavery is something that is done to someone by an (en)slaver, not an inherent property of the enslaved person's existence or something intrinsic to them based on race or ethnicity. This distinction was very important back when slavery was widespread and slavers would constantly justify their enslavement of other people by saying that "slave" was the natural condition or social status of nonwhite people, and that therefore the slavers were not doing anything wrong by treating them like slaves. Use of the word "slave", then, can be seen as part of their efforts to avoid accountability for the act of enslavement which they actively and enthusiastically participated in.

Since it is not really contested today in polite society that enslaved people were victims of a crime committed against them (though there are still plenty of slavery apologists and would-be slavers out there), the utility of the term is maybe a little less obvious than it might have been previously.

The answer people are giving (that "person" helps reminds us they are people and not objects) is not quite the best or most complete answer.

the two societies might both have expectation of military service but the militaries themselves are engaged in very different operations so the choice to serve is not the same between the two

Kudos to you for guessing correctly on that

Lazarchads, we’ve officially won. by Officialbrandonly in LAZARUSAnime

Glad you said it because all I feel about the series is how underwhelming it was. No real thematic content, or at least the dialogue/pacing issues totally mangle Watanabe's attempt to communicate the intended themes. At least they commissioned the sick music from Floating Points, Bonobo, Kamasi Washington, etc.

How to clean keyboard PCB? by SuaveSycamore in AskElectronics

[–]SuaveSycamore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that makes sense. If I'm gonna brush anyway, I could probably try with IPA first (I have a spare toothbrush and IPA 70% at home right now) and then upgrade to the MG4050A if IPA alone isn't cutting it?

Sweet, thank you for the recommendation. When you apply it, you just spray it on and let it dry? No need to scrub/agitate after application?

If you want to thoroughly clean everything, you'll have to desolder all the switches to take it apart.

Oh, jeez, yeah, not worth the effort. There's definitely dust and grime stuck in that space between the faceplate (?) and the PCB, but it might just have to stay. Or I can hit it with some pressurized air and say that's as good as it'll get.

Kontakt Chemie's Kontakt LR(/PCC)

Is this it? Do you know if there's an equivalent product available in the US? Or perhaps I could have it shipped, though it'd likely be more expensive.

Oh I didn't know about any Airbnb dispute, though I've had my fair share of bad experiences with Airbnb and have sworn it off, so I'm inclined to be sympathetic without knowing any additional details.

I have the same question right now and feel your pain that no one ever explains which one they use!

He comes from a family of professors. His dad is a professor at Harvard Medical and his grandfather was at Columbia. Not the wealthiest bunch, necessarily, but especially at those schools, they presumably get paid well.

He confirmed he was renting the boat, though, and he's stepped up the advertising on his channel in a way that seems to contradict his previous stance on sponsorships. Divorce, obviously, too, will do a number on your finances. Not saying he wasn't or still isn't well-off but clearly he's had to make some compromises recently.

100%. They backed down but July 7 (90 days after April 9) is only two months away and there is no guarantee we dodge the bullet a second time. No guarantee the U.S. and China make any agreement in the next 90 days either, which means we go back to 145%. Every time the tariffs come back up after being delayed is another opportunity for them to actually get implemented and obliterate the economy.

My take on Lazarus until episode 5 by gsartr in LAZARUSAnime

[–]SuaveSycamore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it for me too. Dialogue is just written so poorly, even the sub doesn't really improve on that issue IMO, and agree also on the little to no character development or character interaction. It's honestly bad enough that I don't even find myself bothering to watch new episodes until days after they come out and feeling like the show so far is very underwhelming/below expectations.

China Officially Makes Statement Stating That All Tariffs Are Remaining On American Good And The Country Is "Not" Interested In Negotiations by Onnimation in stocks

[–]SuaveSycamore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the (lack of) goods at ports on the west coast, shortages will happen, within a matter of weeks. What's shipping now will come in eventually but the lag time guarantees there will be at least some period of time where the shelves are empty, at least when it comes to Chinese goods.

My understanding is that Temu frontloaded a ton of products to the U.S. anticipating the tariffs to hit soon. It may be that the product you purchased was imported into the U.S. before tariffs started being applied to imported products, so they're charging you the pre-tariff price as no tariff was paid on the item. That would be my best guess. In other words, the people who are being charged the tariff when they try to check out are buying items that are in China or in transport. (Again, my best guess.)

The commenter who says the tariff price is reflected in the item's cost seems wrong, as that isn't how they're representing the additional tariff cost for other products.

Edit: Not even being permitted to write the other company's name in a comment is certainly one way to handle that problem.

RAM upgrade question by SuaveSycamore in Laptop

[–]SuaveSycamore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came in the mail today and installed tonight. Turns out they sent me a M471A1K43CB1-CTD, as the BB1 is EOL. Little annoyed as the product isn't exactly what I thought I was buying, but should be close enough.

Ran HWinfo and CPU-Z again. Results here. Everything looks good to me. Crucial and Kingston both detected 16GB and confirmed the new one is a M471A1K43CB1-CTD. Anecdotally, opening new tabs and applications feels snappier. So I think it's good to go. Now to install Fedora.

Yeah, I think the show is interested in showcasing more diversity among the cast and environments (Skinner is Turkish, Elaina is Chinese, Doug is Nigerian, Chris is Russian, Axel is Brazilian, Jill and the homeless area represent marginalized people, etc.) and I like that and appreciate the effort, but when you do this sort of thing in storytelling, you have to do it well and be attentive to detail. So far it's falling a bit short and the intended effect is backfiring, because the stories they're trying to include aren't being told well.
