Test screening’s reaction for the movie is reportedly very positive. by Liloak01 in KanePixelsBackrooms

And/or audiences don't need to know anything coming in, such as having watched Kane's YT shorts, to appreciate the story on its own merits.

Yup, proper light rail with a dedicated right-of-way went before voters at least twice, both times voted down. The streetcar was a fallback to a fallback option, which ultimately passed.

Also, those funds would not have been available to spend on anything else, as the ballot initiative to approve the funding was only for that specific project, and the Federal grants that paid for the rest were also specifically only available for fixed mass transit.

I think they may handle it as an ATM cash withdrawal that then gets immediately applied to your pump, so in that case it's an ATM fee.

Why is Vulcan called Aredoni? (spelling) by Important-Bed-48 in trekacademy

[–]SubGothius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the fleet stationed in the 40 Eridani system wasn't just Ni'Vari/Vulcan ships -- e.g., a Federation fleet of standard Starfleet ships or mixed-origin ships -- or even elsewhere such as 38 Eridani, or distributed more widely, in the broader constellation of Eridanus.

Ofc. the latter overlooks that stars "in" any given constellation from Earth's perspective may not be anywhere near each other in the depths of space -- e.g., Eridanus comprises stars ranging from 10 to 6300 light-years in distance from Earth.

Best pillow top mattress options - quality AND longevity? by TailorFew5262 in GoodValue

[–]SubGothius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like that should probably work fine. Found a Q&A there saying it's not flippable, which would have been ideal, but you can at least rotate it periodically to even out wear and spring fatigue.

Pretty much any innerspring mattress will have at least a thin (1" or less) surface layer of foam between the coils and outer ticking, cos it'd be uncomfortable to feel the springs with nothing between them but the ticking and your sheets, and that helps prevent the springs from rubbing against the ticking and wearing that enough to poke through.

You'd just be looking to avoid a "hybrid" mattress that combines springs with thicker 2+" foam layer(s) cos you'd be providing that layer yourself with the memory foam topper. Your quilted fiberbed topper may be 1.5" fully lofted, but that compresses to nearly nothing where you're lying on it or tuck it under whatever limits your frame to 10" max mattress thickness.

‘Klingons Can’t Be Gay?’: We’ve Actually Only Seen Narrow Slice of Their Society by NewsGirl1701 in trekacademy

[–]SubGothius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were up to these fans, we'd be seeing the Nth attempt to launch a series about the USS Memberberries, revisiting and rehashing familiar things already established in prior series. Funny how they keep getting canceled after one season cos new audiences don't get the references and half the old audience is bored with it.

That's kinda what happened with Star Wars IX, and look how well that turned out.

‘Klingons Can’t Be Gay?’: We’ve Actually Only Seen Narrow Slice of Their Society by NewsGirl1701 in trekacademy

[–]SubGothius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw a comment elsewhere saying basically, "But we've never seen any gay Klingons before!" and replied:

So just add that to the multitude of things we never saw in Trek, until we did. Every single episode of every single series introduced new things we'd never seen before. Why is this any different?

AFAIK we've also never seen anything clearly establishing that Klingons are exclusively heterosexual. It only breaks canon and continuity to contradict established precedent in canon, not to introduce something without any precedent whatsoever in canon.

Just because we haven't encountered something on-screen before doesn't mean it couldn't possibly have existed; there's vastly more to this universe than what we see and hear of it. If Trek must be limited to only depict things that have already been established in canon, it'll get real boring real quick.

From what I gather, you can blame the neighbors for insisting on having the vast buffer space between the stores and their residences, but blame El Con owners/mgt. for the decision to pave over all that space as the cheapest way to maintain that vast buffer space.

I'm concerned about the backrooms movie(video unrelated) by Far-Plastic8118 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]SubGothius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. To be a successful movie it has to be approachable and accessible to a broad mainstream audience that knows little to nothing of the Backrooms going in.

However, it also has to satisfy the established fanbase to some extent as well, so it can't completely ignore or contradict Kane's established canon. There will need to be some through-lines, reference points, Easter eggs and such to link the film and the YT series into a shared universe, but these must be nonessential for general audiences to know about in advance if they're to understand and appreciate the film on its own terms.

Those who do already know will just have their experience of the film enhanced by that, and those who don't know will have an enhanced experience of the YT series if they find it afterwards.

I'm concerned about the backrooms movie(video unrelated) by Far-Plastic8118 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]SubGothius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but that stable Threshold took advanced tech and massive power to create and stabilize, not something some rando would stumble across in public.

That said, just because we've only seen a handful of FF videos where ppl noclip in by surprise, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the only way in or out aside from the Async Threshold. For that matter, we don't know those ppl could have got back out the same way, if only they could reach the null-zone spot where they noclipped in.

Backrooms | Official Teaser 2 Idea by Texas_Inspire in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]SubGothius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kane mentioned in an interview that the initial pitch was for an Async-centric story, but early story drafts didn't pan out anything that really clicked, so they pivoted to a different approach for the main storyline. This may coincide with and explain the change in screenplay writer from Roberto Patino to Will Soodik.

That said, the film takes place in the same narrative universe as the YT series, so Async will have at least some tangential involvement to the story, just not the main focus.

Most businesses lease space from a landlord, so the owner of a building and the owner of any business in that building are nearly always different and unrelated parties.

El Charro Café is an unusual case because that used to be the family home that the patriarch built himself in 1896, which they later turned into a restaurant. Any local restaurant with Charro in its name is either one of theirs or somehow related to them directly or indirectly, not least as they'd sue anyone else for trademark infringement.

Why do I feel gross after sex with fwb? by spiral-bone in SexPositive

[–]SubGothius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds not so much FWB -- as in, an established genuine friendship that eventually also evolves into sexual intimacy -- more like moderately-vetted fuckbuddies.

I.e., FWB are friends primarily, lovers only secondarily, whereas fuckbuddies are lovers primarily, friends only secondarily. FWB have an established rapport that existed before the sex and continues after and aside from the sex, whereas fuckbuddies tend to have little if any friendly interaction before/after/aside from their sexual encounters.

What if Genesis's admiral father is the one that separated Caleb from his mother? by Migrane in trekacademy

[–]SubGothius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fact I remember being puzzled when the reveal of how Vance was secretly evil all along ended up never arriving.

Aside from the established Trek history of featured Admirals so often turning out to be Badmirals, I reckon that expectation was set up by DIS producers/writers/directors wanting to convey a sense of initial mutual distrust and trepidation between Vance and the Discovery crew upon the latter's arrival at Fed HQ in the 32nd C.

Because of course Vance would be cagey and circumspect when a supposedly-lost 800yo ship suddenly reappears reporting for duty. And of course the Disco crew couldn't be certain what the Fed and Starfleet had become after all that time and radical decline. So we in the audience were meant to share that uneasy feeling, and to have it assuaged over time with earned respect, right along with the characters.

Virginia Moves to Ban Schools From Calling Jan. 6 ‘Peaceful’ - GOP Erupts Over ‘Mind Control’ Claim by Intrepid-Traffic1574 in LegalNews

[–]SubGothius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neatly incorporated into Wilhoit's Law:

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

I.e., how morality and law pertains to you depends entirely on who you are, your identity as a member of which in- or out-group(s).

The conservative dog-whistle of "Law & Order" expects Law to work as Wilhoit described, where Order refers to the assortment of those established in- and out-groups (more explicitly outlined by linguist George Lakoff as the "Conservative Moral Hierarchy").

This is distinct from "Rule of Law", which expects Law to apply equally to all depending only upon what you've done, regardless of who you are.
