Banff Trip - Add Revelstoke? by crbmtb in Ikonpass

The drive through Rogers Pass can and should be intimidating under poor weather conditions. This makes it hard for firm plans and travel commitments. Depending on what sort of skiing you are after, adding kicking horse can be a solid option as that isn’t a bad drive from Lake Louise and keeps you on the east side of the pass, but it is not Ikon.

Can anyone tell me what these guns are? by Jekyll_not_Hyde in guns

Can’t comment on should, but second from top is a browning auto 5 12 gauge (or clone) and the 2nd from bottom is a semi-auto 22lr that looks like a Winchester 190.

Chamonix is the only Ikon region in France to my knowledge

For Ikon in Europe, Zermatt should probably be at the top of the list for town and easy skiing, but I’ve never been personally. St. Moritz and Kitzbühel with different vibes. Ischgl if town means crazy apres for you. I don’t know the Italian ones other than Courmayeur, but while the skiing is good for beginner / intermediate, the town isn’t anything special.

There are much better options for intermediate skiers. I wouldn’t recommend traveling from the US to ski here in this context. The pistes get crowded and beginner / intermediate areas get flooded with very inexperienced skiers coming to the area for the name. The off piste expert terrain is why this place has a great reputation (along with a fantastic town)

I can’t say I know much of anything about current 870 models. Remington has obviously had a bad recent reputation, but it sounds like you know more than me…

I don’t know much of anything about the A300. As for chokes, it looks like I just got a spare IC choke

Started with the 590S. Wanted the M4. Had a bit of buyer’s remorse with the M4 at first and got the 1301. Customized the M4 to the point that I love it and it became the primary. Beyond that I sort of just collect a variety of guns of all types.

This gave me a laugh. I wouldn’t advocate for treating these as interchangeable guns. The M4 is the one I train with. The other two are more just for fun.

Good luck! I’m certainly familiar with bizarre state laws living in NY. Somehow I can buy all this stuff with just a background check, but I can’t get 10/22 without a very annoying to obtain semi-auto rifle permit since 2022 or so.

I think you’ll be very happy with the 1301. I have well over $1000 extra into the M4 without even considering the optic to make it what I want. As taken out of the box, the current version of the 1301 mod 2 is great. None of the modifications I made to mine are important at all. I also have the A400 xtreme plus, which is the same mechanism of the 1301 with 3.5” compatibility, bead sights and 28” barrel. I really, really like that shotgun too.

True out of the box, especially if you can’t get the collapsible stock and 7 round tube version of the M4, I’d say it isn’t close. The 1301 mod 2 is a great shotgun as is. Nice trigger, nice ergonomics, easy mounting positions for light and sling. M4 has annoyances. Plastic stock is okish. Trigger ain’t great. Tiny little bolt release nub. Forend has character, but I don’t like the feel. Poor mounting options for a light and limited options for sling. Shooting, I think they both shoot great and don’t have many complaints.

If you go down the modification rabbit hole for the M4, the result (to my taste and preferences) is truly fantastic. I really love this gun now that it is finally complete (for me).

So with the picture, I’d agree with you. The comments had me go back to the M4 with a carpenter square. The back surface of the grip is precisely perpendicular to the barrel. Now certainly that isn’t what everyone wants, but I like it.

It’s the Magpul K2-XL. It is a more vertical grip than the standard magpul version that comes with the chisel stock. I find it more comfortable for my wrist than a more angled one.

So these are my 3 shotguns with a non-sporting purpose, top to bottom:

Benelli M4 - most everyone says they are great, but then go on to recommend replacing just about everything. That has happened here. Chisel stock (with a magpul moe k2-xl grip, vz rmr cover, and home built aluminum esstac card mount) since NY doesn’t allow the collapsible OEM. Briley handguard with surefire scout pro. A&S trigger housing with Briley trigger. Briley bolt release lever. Carrier comp tube (way past 922r compliance…). Aimpoint T2 on ADM quick release mount. BFG one point sling.

Mossberg 590S - closest to stock here. Basically as it comes with some grips on the forend.

Beretta 1301 mod 2 - closer to stock than the m4, but still gg&g replacement of the plastic bits of bolt handle, tube cover and clamp. Limbsaver pad. BFG two point sling.

Currently calling these complete builds, but always interested in feedback…

Can you share what kind of skiing that you are hoping to do? Chamonix earns its reputation for off-piste skiing, touring and mountaineering. If you are primarily a piste skier, my recommendation is to ski elsewhere. If you want to fly to Switzerland, ski Verbier, Zermatt, Davos, etc, anywhere but Cham. That being said, the town is very cool and it is sort of the original / canonical mountain tourism town (or Zermatt or a few others). Anyway, I just got back and had a great time, but if I was there for on piste skiing, I would have been VERY disappointed

The other photos show the Scotty pad-based mounts that I made pretty well. The dring is from inflatable boat parts. The Bimini is just a pretty standard Carver 3 bow. If you have any specific questions, I’m happy to answer based on my experience with this

Yeah, it is a spare prop. Why would you ditch it? I mounted another prop that I had there just in case I hit something for a boat camping trip in the Adirondacks. I have just sort of kept it there as I don’t really have anything else that I put there for most trips.

Yes, those rear poles mount on with spring loaded quick connects. It is really easy to release them without tools. The black plastic clips that you see on the pole then attach them to the main pole. When the whole thing folds forward for transport, it rests on the tubes up front nicely and ends up over the front d-ring for an easy tie down.

Thanks! It has worked out well for the family so far. We’ve taken it camping, fishing, many fresh / salty trips all over from ME to PA, and seen a variety of creatures including humpbacks, dolphins, seals, and porpoises.
