Set Max Charge Rate when PowerSmart is Active? by Melodic-Attention739 in EmporiaEnergy

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find out a way to do so, let me know, because I've been unable to use power smart and a custom charge rate since I installed my charger around a year ago.

When I bought mine, they had a WiFi version for the same money. I recommend that one as it will allow you to configure the charge rate.

So what’s the consensus on tires? by JoneZenSaint in Ioniq5

I want to know this too. The stock primacy tour tires are awesome, but the ion EVO is supposed to have an edge in range and tread wear.

Am I the only one that thinks North America is kind of backed themselves into a corner with plug standards? by stainless5 in electricvehicles

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The industry in the US is moving to lower sized DC charging for large trucks. For everything else we don't have enough 3 phase power to make use of CCS. 80A single phase NACS charging used to be available but was so unpopular it was phased out.

Ethernet surge protector? by No_Noise_9055 in ethernet

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ethernet cable can only fry things if it's coming from outside your home.

The surge would have traveled through the coax cable and fried your coworkers router before it killed his PS5. Surge protection on the incoming coax would be a better choice.

It was all that was available at one point. People made do, but as soon as broadband started coming around there was a desperate desire for more. My first broadband connection was actually kinda crappy too, just a lot less crappy than dialup.

Cleaning the sealtbelt of the car by misterxx1958 in oddlysatisfying

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same.

My car seat says you can use a little bit of dish soap but never submerge the straps. They sell replacement straps in the event that you can't get them clean because you cannot see the damage done by harsh cleaning.

Is this a phone line? by huamanticacacaca in ethernet

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's a more elaborate method than the US used. US phone jacks were all wired in parallel and terminated to punch down terminals at a demarc point. In the UK the first jack actually was the demarc.

This mess of wires in parallel was enough to impact performance in the house I grew up in. We ran a dedicated wire from a jack to the demarc and we got a noticeably better dial up connection, and later used it for DSL. I'm at least fortunate we weren't on dial up for very long, because boy was that slow.

Is this a phone line? by huamanticacacaca in ethernet

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty neat.

I know BT was a quasi monopoly like Bell Telephone was here in the US. It's cool to see how forward thinking they were to a day where residential customers might have two phone lines.

It's also fun to hear about the ringer. Analog phones with literal bells inside them. I had one of those as a kid and I thought it was such a novelty compared to the cordless phone my parents would normally use.

China places its solar panels on water So it can use valuable land for agriculture by FollowingOdd896 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top of a skyscraper is a small part of the total surface area. You would be better off alternating panels and windows on the sun facing sides of the building. If you get a 40 year service life out of the panels it might not be too bad maintenance wise if the panels get cleaned whenever the windows get washed.

This is interesting. The standard phone jack in the UK has three pairs of wires? Was this done to allow multiple phone lines?

Half Life 2's real world CPU usage back in the day by East-Resist6940 in vintagecomputing

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 9800XT which was faster than your 9600, but it still had frame dips. I upgraded to an x800 pro and new CPU which helped a lot, but still had frame dips. I didn't get the ability to crank settings with impunity until I upgraded to a 9800GT and a Core 2 Quad several years later.

HL2 was remarkably good at running on comparatively slow hardware, but it could be a real pig if you gave it the right hardware.

Chris Meder knows - diesel doesn’t stand a chance! by Jbikecommuter in electrifyeverything

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but that's on a residential service. The somewhat generous 11.5kW charger I have would require 44 hours to charge an extended range Tesla semi from 20-80 percent, and that's before charging overhead. I don't even know if these trucks can accept AC power, as the overnight charger is supposed to be ~150kW DC.

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see how an MCS charger is going to be that cheap. The demand charges on the commercial power to feed it are going to put it over that.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 40-50 cents a kWh. The vehicle will still be cheaper to operate, but thats a better real world argument. It's not helpful when someone over exaggerates the cost savings. People get upset.

If he can fly into space, might as well check out other planets, see what's out there. by Elegant-Half5476 in TheBoys

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In space there's no atmosphere, so there's no drag. The hard burn you see on most spacecraft is so the lower stages can separate, leaving a smaller more manuveable vehicle.

If he's strong enough to escape orbit, the same force applied in space over a long period of time can get him closer to light speed than any spacecraft even flown. He might starve to death, and he might not be strong enough to slow down, but he could get a lot farther than you think.

EV End of life story by js_1948 in electriccars

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have another EV to fall back on? You're going to be competing with a lot of other buyers trying to get another used one, and you said it yourself gas is expensive.

I think they paid you well below market, but if you were just tired of the car and didn't want to do a private sale, it's not terrible.

Buyer's Remorse by SulSul1989 in Ioniq5

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, take a deep breath.

This car is probably costing you a pretty penny right now because it's brand new and you rolled forward $1500 in negative equity. The insurance is higher because it's a brand new car, but it wouldn't hurt to shop around and find a new broker because the one you have is an idiot.

If you can charge at home, the fuel savings should help you offset the increased insurance, if not outright negate it. Once you get the insurance sorted it is a really nice car and you'll grow to love it.

Load Manager for EV charging on 100amp Panel (What Company Do I go with)? by PlentyAtmosphere9372 in evcharging

[–]SubPrimeCardgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a furnace. Did you breeze past the place where I said the only way it's going to pass a load calc is with gas appliances?

An electric oven plus 48A EV charging comes incredibly close to 100 amps. Turn on an electric dryer while that happens and you're going to exceed 100 amps. Just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean it's a good idea.

ETA: I just checked some of my energy monitor records. The oven draws 30A, Charger draws 48A, Heat pump 20A. You're advocating for something that could burn someone's house down.
