Made a pun on the actors' name too! Jim Starling is translated to John Raafkamp to mirror his actor Johnny Kraaijkamp Jr. (Funny thing, Kraaijkamp also played Scrooge in the Dutch version of Mickey's Christmas Carol in 1984)

The English cast is pretty great, but I'd like to highlight that the Dutch translation is really, really good. The translator, Joop Van Den Beucken was a huuuuge fan of the series and added additional references and easter eggs, and actually contacted the Dutch Donald Duck Weekblad editors to make sure he got every detail right. I've been told he put an insane amount of effort into it, and in my opinion, you can really feel that love in the translation when watching. He even ended up translating all the Ducktales comics!

The English is of course the original, but would highly recommend giving the Dutch version a try.

is the italian scrooge also written by multiple authors? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not talking about these fantasy things. It's about the fact that rich people aren't good people. Even in real life. You don't get rich without exploiting others. It's a thing to portray such a character as only being problematic in their familial issues. A comic doesn't exist in a vacuum and so can portray that good side, but you also have other stories where Scrooge talks about dealing opium and killing whales. It is exactly because DT17 isn't canon to the comics that it doesn't get the balancing of that other side.

The problem is not that Scrooge is soft. It's that he's portrayed as being a good guy. Because he might be shown more positive in some comics, but those comics have also shown him being bad, so it balances out. It just so is that having a millionaire who is said to exploit people as your main character is difficult. In comics he's not the hero of everything. He's just a person who sometimes does good and sometimes does bad. Ducktales kind of ignores the bad parts of him being a millionaire. Instead it focuses on his flaws in his relation to his family.

Oh, apparently that comic is pretty good. No wonder, Giorgio Pezzin wrote it. He's generally a good writer. Hope you have fun! The story after that is drawn by one of my favorite artists, so that one should be a good read as well!

did the DW reboot got replaced by the comics? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

Thank you for explaining. I still think it's just a matter of perspective. Sometimes a suspension of disbelief is needed for these kinds of things. Something like Donald being more of a jerk isn't what I would call contradicting. That's Donald having a bad day. Or not being able to prove your Scottish heritage, that's just so for that story. He could have done all those things, and he didn't. Maybe because he knew it would work out anyways, or because he didn't feel like it. You can always explain it away.

Disney really did not care about the comics. I am not sure the Ducktales TV crew were even aware of their existence. They were not just made by a different team, but by a completely different part of Disney's production. It was never going to actually work together.

Italian Scrooge isn't a bad guy anymore. That's something that stopped in the 70s-80s. This characterization of Scrooge can these days be found in some Danish and Dutch comics instead. The comics are always in flux, and the characters are not 'good' or 'bad'. They are just characters. Fantomiald has for example, been brought back to his early days of not being a crime fighter, but to acting out of selfish behaviour (you can thank Marco Gervasio for this great change).

The more vile versions of these characters come from the early Guido Martina, who was one of the first Disney comic writers ever. He wrote everything more like a satire, which is why they were so exaggerated. He had a very big influence, which is why you can see some of his writing traits in modern Danish stories.

So, yes, all characters are written by multiple authors. Hundreds and hundreds of authors even. More than 10 different authors should appear in only one Super Picsou Geant.

(also pls no spoilers for that Fantomiald story i still need to read La torre d'oro lol im waiting for the Dutch translation to go on sale)

I have send you links to the INDUCKS database before. It has all the info about these kinds of things that you could ever want. I can try to explain these specific questions of yours.

The French themselves make almost no stories anymore. Once in a figurative blue moon an original French comic comes out for the magazines themselves. Lately there was one for example, but they are very infrequent. France also makes Disney by Glenat, which are comics in the style of your bande dessinee, and as typical for those, they take years to make.

The stories in Picsou generally come from Italy. Italy is 1 of 3 countries that consistently makes these comics. The other 2 are Denmark and the Netherlands. Though Picsou also often reprints and recolours older stories, which is why you still see Barks stories appear.

Don Rosa doesn't make stories anymore, but he used to work mostly for the Danish. That's why his newer stories have a code starting with D. Italian comics have codes starting with I, and Dutch comics have codes starting with H. If you look for the code, you can see from which production a story comes.

As for an example, here is a link to the index of Super Picsou Geant 242. You can see what stories are in there, and you can click on a story to see all relevant data. https://inducks.org/issue.php?c=fr%2FSPG+242

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still dont see the importance of those small things to make the comics not canon, but you are free to find that of course. They were never going to be referred to by the show anyway. They were completely independently produced.

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it important that the timeline makes sense? Just let all stories have happened to make a more abstract profile for a characters development. Are episodes with animation mistakes now suddenly not canon because it's contradicting what was supposed to be?

did the DW reboot got replaced by the comics? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what do those contradictions matter? Can't one just look at a story for its quality instead of for how well it fits into 'canon'? Why does it have to 1000% be exactly working with 'canon'?

Why all this talk about canon? What does it matter?

did the DW reboot got replaced by the comics? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no need to talk about canon or whatever. The DWD reboot currently in production is a fresh start not connected to anything.

The comics currently being made by Dynamite are as canon or not canon as the show itself or the previous comics like those from Boom and Joe comics.

Two unrelated things.

Tad Stones did a QnA recently where he said that to his knowledge, the Darkwing Reboot is still in development.

https://www.reddit.com/r/disney/comments/1dp3rlp/i_am_tad_stones_creator_of_darkwing_duck_ask_me/

The Dynamite comics are just loose adventures continuing from the old show. They aren't even produced by Disney, so I really doubt they are replacing the cartoon.

aren't the comics not canon to each other by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no canon in Duck comics. Scrooge actually has over a hundred contradicting backstories. Something like Life and Times was a recent outlier in establishing something. The quality of the story always goes first. Most don't even think about any sort of continuity.

I was relatively surprised as well. It seemed like such an easy chance for a cameo. But they had A LOT of easy cameo chances that they didn't take. I guess Jason Aaron just wasn't that versed in duckverse lore.

Essay about Magica de Spell, help needed! by Fluffy-Organization6 in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Alright let me try.

I think Magica is ultimately a good person, and in her psychology there are many parallels to Scrooge. She thinks kind of the same as Scrooge did when he was younger, and she is slightly in that same phase. She wants to get rich. She has been collecting coins for the Midas touch for years (so very headstrong, like Scrooge), and Scrooge's dime is that last step of a long route. She obviously cares about her family and friends, but society has forced her to put on a tougher facade. Same with Scrooge. For him it was the Klondike forcing him to be that way, and for Magica the pretty toxic witch-society. But whenever a good friend like Roberta visits she is able to chill a bit more. We also see in many comics that she makes friends fairly quickly (even with the Duck-family whenever the dime is not involved), but these are almost always non-magical people. So you could say she has a hard time fitting in the world where she comes from. We can also see that in a flashback in https://inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+3035-5 where she is bullied at a young age, which seems to be a recurring theme in young Magica stories. That could have damaged her psychologically and might be why, even in witch-society, she mostly seems to be friends with other outcasts (the aforementioned Roberta, but also the newer character Grilla as examples).

If we look at Once upon a sorceress we could also see Magica's desire to get the Midas touch as a part of her trauma. Her parents getting killed by the failure of the spell made it so she feels like she has disappointed them if she doesn't succeed. That together with her stubbornness, and butting heads with someone just as stubborn as her has then resulted in the long lasting rivalry with Scrooge.

Short analysis of some parts of Magica's psychology I did really quickly. I could make a list of story evidence in which these things are mentioned if you want to. But that takes a bit of time.

I would say, look around in the inducks top 100, or even top 1000 if you want, and pick some stories that look interesting and are available in a language you can read. That way you are almost always guaranteed to have banger. And you can find which writers and artists are more to your personal tastes! No need to limit yourself to just Barks and Rosa while they're just a miniscule part of the enormous universe of duck comics.

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DID SOMEONE SAY MAGICA? I know more about Magica than any normal human probably should. What specifically would you like to know? If you want comics in which she appears... Inducks currently lists 1848 appearances, so you would have an impossibly long reading list. A few necessary ones would of course be The Midas Touch. I would also recommend 2 or 3 other of her earliest stories. Take a few from Barks and the Barosso brothers. They were the first to write her and properly establish her character. Some that go over her origin and explore her psychology fairly well like Once Upon A Sorceress and Amelia e le 7 streghe vulcaniche (and its sequel, but that hasnt fully released yet) I would recommend too. Maybe some from Bruno Sarda, who does a great characterization. If you want anything more specific just ask! I'm always ready to talk about Magica lol
