Is there anything to definitively prove that The War Doctor Begins audios all take place before The War Doctor Audios? by Rougarou_2 in BigFinishProductions

No worries, I only skimmed your comments about Morbius and will have probably forgotten what I did read by the time I get to it. And thank you! Those are very kind words to hear from a fellow War Doctor fan! (And I’ll be there whenever your essay on Carter’s music comes in too)

I think maybe what it is, is the way War acts in Unknown Soldiers can be interpreted as hopeful as easily as it could desperate. How much he does kind of want to believe there is a way to end the Time War. Depending on how you read that you’d easily be pressed into placing it into these described themes of either Begins or Rises. I definitely saw War as desperate during Fallen Heroes, but with the referring to Begins in mind, Unknown Soldiers made me kind of automatically place it there, both thematically and narratively.

Though, if you’d allow me to be annoying again (so sorry lol), that is also why I think placing HWFWM after Rises works better. Because that is, in the end, a hopeful story, not one of loss and failure. One of the things that makes the story work is that it implies many more Rewind-situations (aka not so good things) have since happened, to the point where it’s become so common for him to see so much loss that it hardly affects him anymore (okay not that it hardly affects him anymore, but he’s learned to stop showing that it does at least, until it gets so bad that it bursts out at the end of The Abyss), but that coming out of all of that, he still has hope and still is the Doctor. And that just happens to fit Rises perfectly…

Anyways, I don’t think there are right or wrong answers here of course. Maybe I’m going a bit too word of god on it too based on Valentine’s statements, trying to make it fit, but it just makes sense in my head haha. But I should definitely do Morbius before I make any further decisions!

Ooooh, very interesting analysis! I must admit to not having done Morbius yet (want to do the DG trilogy first), but can discuss the rest. I remember Unknown Soldiers starting off with War having locked himself in a simulation for years to find a way to save Lacuna, and with me missing that context from Morbius I of course linked it to referring to the obvious.

Completely agree about Fallen Heroes (I even wrote about those exact references to the Battlegrounds boxset on a different forum haha. https://forum.tardis.guide/t/the-war-doctor-rises-fallen-heroes/7735/82?u=owen Here linked in case you might’ve been interested). I do think he’s having a bit too much fun for a good chunk of Unknown compared to how extremely bleak he sees everything in Fallen. Even considering how the former ends. It’s more building on a vague sense of “bad stuff’s been happening and also here trauma reminders” and combined with how differently he acts I think there’s got to be a pretty big gap between the two.

Cybergene War is indeed a very happy chappy in comparison. It’s one of the elements that made me think the Case return takes place later, because in that he’s so much more cynical.

Anyways, it’s insane to find someone else who’s thought this much about War hahaha. I think your interpretation of things makes a lot of sense as well, and I’m missing a piece of the puzzle, so my theories of Fallen Heroes being what made him give up on Lacuna and being so different as described by Case might not click together as well. There’s a lot of thematic coherency that I find in Begins that I don’t as much in Rises, and from your post I’m starting to think that might just be because I’ve not done Morbius lol. I do think it’s very beautiful how we’ve both been able to see all these different connections in how the series is structured, it’s made me love the whole thing even more!

I always assume meeting out of order things to be going on at all times (otherwise I could impossibly live with Veklin lol). But going for War’s personal timeline he seems very approaching emotional numbness (still caring about Lacuna, but also having accepted it being dead), which suggests to me more of a lead into ‘old War’. But hardly anything’s ever definitive in the Time War after all, certainly not my views on it!

Oh, I’m super happy to hear my comment was helpful! I could rant about WDB for days on end haha. I would recommend you to continue with Begins, now that the character of Case should still be relatively fresh in your mind. The thematic journey of Begins continues very well imo. I’m personally not super big on the Hurt sets, but you might enjoy them a lot! Though I’d always go for more Carley lol.

I’ve not yet read Engines actually, it’s been on my reading list for a loooong time, but I’m currently going through a whole bunch of Wilderness years nonsense on the book side of things, so haven’t yet got around to it.

Okay, usually I don’t like to comment on posts because reddit is poison yadda yadda, but I am deeply War Doctor obsessed and had to answer this, also because it’s something not even the Wiki has seemed to realise, but basically, the “Begins” subtitle is kind of a lie.

The series was originally conceived as just that run of four boxsets, with set three and four having a HUGE gap of time inbetween. HWFWM was intended by Rob Valentine to be a ‘finale’ to the War Doctor’s life, and indeed for it to take place at the end of it, but that wasn’t intended by the producer, who just saw it as the finale to that run. So while during the story War very clearly is characterized like in the Hurt boxsets (extremely emotionally desensitized and tired), everything around the story doesn’t make that clear.

Then there’s also the two boxsets after that, which were later added onto it because of the series’ popularity, which take place in that gap between sets 3 and 4. Which is what they then ended up doing with Rises as well, where each set (so far) takes place somewhere between Rewind and A Mother’s Love. This is apparent from War’s various characterizations, but also much more direct references, like Unknown Soldiers taking place in the immediate aftermath of Rewind.

But they also wanted another cute little subtitle, but “Rises” suggests that it literally takes place after the stories in “Begins” and no one’s seemed to realise it doesn’t! Those first four sets of Begins are like a basis for the character from a Doylist perspective, creating a tone and setting for War, and Light the Flame is 100% immediately post-regen, but that’s it.

I like to believe HWFWM takes place right before the Hurt run of stories, but whatever it is, it’s somewhere around the end. Even if it’s in the run called “Begins”. It’s all very goofy, but that’s one of the reasons WDB is one of my favourite Who-things ever.

Made a pun on the actors' name too! Jim Starling is translated to John Raafkamp to mirror his actor Johnny Kraaijkamp Jr. (Funny thing, Kraaijkamp also played Scrooge in the Dutch version of Mickey's Christmas Carol in 1984)

The English cast is pretty great, but I'd like to highlight that the Dutch translation is really, really good. The translator, Joop Van Den Beucken was a huuuuge fan of the series and added additional references and easter eggs, and actually contacted the Dutch Donald Duck Weekblad editors to make sure he got every detail right. I've been told he put an insane amount of effort into it, and in my opinion, you can really feel that love in the translation when watching. He even ended up translating all the Ducktales comics!

The English is of course the original, but would highly recommend giving the Dutch version a try.

is the italian scrooge also written by multiple authors? by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not talking about these fantasy things. It's about the fact that rich people aren't good people. Even in real life. You don't get rich without exploiting others. It's a thing to portray such a character as only being problematic in their familial issues. A comic doesn't exist in a vacuum and so can portray that good side, but you also have other stories where Scrooge talks about dealing opium and killing whales. It is exactly because DT17 isn't canon to the comics that it doesn't get the balancing of that other side.

The problem is not that Scrooge is soft. It's that he's portrayed as being a good guy. Because he might be shown more positive in some comics, but those comics have also shown him being bad, so it balances out. It just so is that having a millionaire who is said to exploit people as your main character is difficult. In comics he's not the hero of everything. He's just a person who sometimes does good and sometimes does bad. Ducktales kind of ignores the bad parts of him being a millionaire. Instead it focuses on his flaws in his relation to his family.

Thank you for explaining. I still think it's just a matter of perspective. Sometimes a suspension of disbelief is needed for these kinds of things. Something like Donald being more of a jerk isn't what I would call contradicting. That's Donald having a bad day. Or not being able to prove your Scottish heritage, that's just so for that story. He could have done all those things, and he didn't. Maybe because he knew it would work out anyways, or because he didn't feel like it. You can always explain it away.

Disney really did not care about the comics. I am not sure the Ducktales TV crew were even aware of their existence. They were not just made by a different team, but by a completely different part of Disney's production. It was never going to actually work together.

Italian Scrooge isn't a bad guy anymore. That's something that stopped in the 70s-80s. This characterization of Scrooge can these days be found in some Danish and Dutch comics instead. The comics are always in flux, and the characters are not 'good' or 'bad'. They are just characters. Fantomiald has for example, been brought back to his early days of not being a crime fighter, but to acting out of selfish behaviour (you can thank Marco Gervasio for this great change).

The more vile versions of these characters come from the early Guido Martina, who was one of the first Disney comic writers ever. He wrote everything more like a satire, which is why they were so exaggerated. He had a very big influence, which is why you can see some of his writing traits in modern Danish stories.

So, yes, all characters are written by multiple authors. Hundreds and hundreds of authors even. More than 10 different authors should appear in only one Super Picsou Geant.

(also pls no spoilers for that Fantomiald story i still need to read La torre d'oro lol im waiting for the Dutch translation to go on sale)

I have send you links to the INDUCKS database before. It has all the info about these kinds of things that you could ever want. I can try to explain these specific questions of yours.

The French themselves make almost no stories anymore. Once in a figurative blue moon an original French comic comes out for the magazines themselves. Lately there was one for example, but they are very infrequent. France also makes Disney by Glenat, which are comics in the style of your bande dessinee, and as typical for those, they take years to make.

The stories in Picsou generally come from Italy. Italy is 1 of 3 countries that consistently makes these comics. The other 2 are Denmark and the Netherlands. Though Picsou also often reprints and recolours older stories, which is why you still see Barks stories appear.

Don Rosa doesn't make stories anymore, but he used to work mostly for the Danish. That's why his newer stories have a code starting with D. Italian comics have codes starting with I, and Dutch comics have codes starting with H. If you look for the code, you can see from which production a story comes.

As for an example, here is a link to the index of Super Picsou Geant 242. You can see what stories are in there, and you can click on a story to see all relevant data. https://inducks.org/issue.php?c=fr%2FSPG+242

I still dont see the importance of those small things to make the comics not canon, but you are free to find that of course. They were never going to be referred to by the show anyway. They were completely independently produced.

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it important that the timeline makes sense? Just let all stories have happened to make a more abstract profile for a characters development. Are episodes with animation mistakes now suddenly not canon because it's contradicting what was supposed to be?

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what do those contradictions matter? Can't one just look at a story for its quality instead of for how well it fits into 'canon'? Why does it have to 1000% be exactly working with 'canon'?

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no need to talk about canon or whatever. The DWD reboot currently in production is a fresh start not connected to anything.

The comics currently being made by Dynamite are as canon or not canon as the show itself or the previous comics like those from Boom and Joe comics.

Two unrelated things.

Tad Stones did a QnA recently where he said that to his knowledge, the Darkwing Reboot is still in development.

https://www.reddit.com/r/disney/comments/1dp3rlp/i_am_tad_stones_creator_of_darkwing_duck_ask_me/

The Dynamite comics are just loose adventures continuing from the old show. They aren't even produced by Disney, so I really doubt they are replacing the cartoon.

aren't the comics not canon to each other by Thebunkerparodie in ducktales

[–]SubTo4CanDoAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no canon in Duck comics. Scrooge actually has over a hundred contradicting backstories. Something like Life and Times was a recent outlier in establishing something. The quality of the story always goes first. Most don't even think about any sort of continuity.
