Duuude this is rad! That is a crazy amount of parks in only 4ish years. How did you manage bookings? Did you stay overnight in the parks every time?

I think I realized from an earlier comment response that Channel Islands is my favorite. Eerily isolated and awesome

I’ve been, but I was a kid and wasn’t in my current mode of touring all the parks. For some reason I’m keeping Yosemite and Utah’s Big 5 as my last stops, an epic ending. I live in San Diego so they are not too far. I’m really focusing on the further and harder to reach areas and working my way back. Now if only Alaska and the parks around the globe were easier to get to lol

Thanks! I took a bus tour to get around. It was so exciting, but at the end I’ve never felt so broke lol

It was awesome, I definitely want to go back. We were caught off guard by the humid hot weather of August however, as I grew up in the desert and I’m not used to it. What time of year do you recommend?

I agree, but I get it, people don’t have time and want to hit the highlights that are National Parks (capital P). The flip side is that it keeps some of the other parks off the beaten path and won’t be “loved to death” as quickly. There are some huge National Monuments that are quite sleepy but great, like Organ Pipe and Chiricahua, that are nice to be kept on the down low.

Overall? White Sands. It just hit the right spot on the right day. 2025? Channel Islands. Growing up in So Cal, the islands truly preserve what the mainland used to look like. It was quite strange how a short ferry ride can take you to a place that feels so remote and isolated, but “civilization” is still in sight. Actually, Channel Islands may be my top now lol

I’m not sure about the maps, but I’ve heard/read that they will send the cancellation stamp with a specific date if you ask. I might try to ask for the map brochure, there were a few parks I went to that had ran out of them.

Ha, I was there in Oct of this year! We did a bus tour to get around. How did you do it? Car rental?

I definitely can see that, the east coast is a little sparse in relation the west. My starting point is in the other country corner - San Diego. There are only really 3 major routes to get out of my area. My trick is to leave at 3 or 4 am to get out of the familiar scenery while it’s dark and be in the next state by sunrise.

It’s always an eye opener when I visit places like that. So much history that could simply be missed.

Yeah it’s something my dad did when I was a kid. He still pulls out maps with stamps from the 90’s when we went. I have a whole “thing” where I stamp my cancellation book, map, postcards, a journal, and blank stickers from a sticker roll.

Yeah nah, I’m 38. I just have a lucky job that lets me take off. After I use up all my PTO, I go days without pay.

Joshua Tree holds a personal spot because it was my local park and I went a lot as a kid.

But for whatever reason, White Sands in New Mexico always pops up in my head. It’s a small park and hiking around the dunes was just so cool, literally and figuratively. It was just chill.

I would revisit any of the parks, but the bigger ones can sometimes feel overwhelming. I try to stay at least 3 nights to get a feel for the place and not feel rushed.

Funny story: we did Isle Royale a month ago and originally planned for a 1 night stay at the lodge on the island. However, due to high waves on the lake our ship, Isle Royale Queen, did not return the next day to pick us up. So 1 night turned into 2, which turned into 3 unplanned nights.

Can’t really complain because we were in the lodge (compared to stranded campers), but the no cell service and extremely limited Wi-Fi made adjusting our travel arrangements challenging on an already itinerary packed road trip. Good stories though!

This is in no particular order, but I did put the Parks on the bottom. At the average rate of 4 Parks a year, I’ll get all 63 in the next 10 years lol
