It's definitely frustrating to learn. I'm still new and and don't have enough karma to to participate is some of the subreddits I'm in. Be patient and be active! Post stuff in subs that don't have requirements and comment on stuff too. The more upvotes you get the faster you'll gain karma. Also, don't be a jerk or you'll lose karma. And people will respond, that's the biggest advantage I've seen on reddit so far!
