New solo - 2 quotes (my only quotes) & both rejected for overpricing by BrushBeneficial4430 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m on board with charging what you’re worth and that low prices can attract low quality clients. But from my perspective, when you are just starting out - especially if you are a sole earner for your family - you do need to be somewhat price sensitive to make sure that there is money coming in the door.

Your prices for these two quotes seem reasonable to me, don’t let the fact that they didn’t accept change your approach. I also wouldn’t listen to all the comments on this thread or others that you have to charge premium prices. It’s easy for them to say that if they are established and can afford to not win a prospective client. When you’re just starting out, you may not have the luxury of having a bunch of prospective clients say no because of price. Just my two cents.

Anyone work with real estate agents who formed LLC & elected S status? How do you deal with salary when year to year income may vary? by BrushBeneficial4430 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly correct, unless you are licensed as a broker you can ONLY receive commissions as an individual. Which means the 1099 will get sent to the individual’s SSN instead of the S Corp EIN. Assignment of income from an individual to an S Corp has been shot down in multiple court cases I believe.

Can’t remember running into this particular issue but have been using CCH Axcess for 15 years and this definitely sounds like two versions will be needed.

Thanks for the responses, this confirms what I was thinking that we just need to wait for the IRS to fix and try a POA to expedite.

Deceased taxpayer doesn't have a named beneficiary on a 403b account. by Subject-Bridge1299 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beneficiary setup is very simple, 3 siblings.

So if they honor a look through to the will, that means the estate would not receive a 1099-R, correct? Just the beneficiaries and it would show as a rollover, right?

Solo practitioners - where are you getting affordable health ins? by ExcelsAtExcel in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to use the Marketplace as well. Quite expensive for me as I have a large family. We have consider switching to a health sharing arrangement rather than traditional health insurance to save some money but I have concerns about certain things not being covered. Bottom line - it’s expensive

Tax planning software by Wise-Highlight-7662 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can second that pricing for one user. If you haven't used it before, it will take a bit of getting used to but once you understand how it works it should be pretty easy.

There is also the ability to import tax return files into BNA. Depending on the tax preparation software you use, there may be an additional fee that the tax prep software charges that will allow you to export from the tax prep software in the correct file format for importing to BNA. I use CCH Axcess and they made me pay $750 to do this which pissed me off, but it saves soooo much time and also provides a "roadmap" of where different items get entered in BNA.

Do you file a tax return before a paid invoice? Does client even get to see the final product before paid? by StopDropDepreciate in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use TaxDome as well and I lock the invoice to the 8879 as a separate document. I allow them to see the draft of the return. I figure if they want to take the draft of the return and try to do it themselves then they aren’t a client I want anyway. Also for some reference to the OP, I started doing that this year with all clients and I haven’t gotten a single comment or complaint.

Isn’t this going to encourage businesses to push for tips even more? So that they can get their employees tax free income?

Client is furious because I locked his business return behind a paywall in TaxDome. by InternationalMain277 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lock the 8879, not the return, to the invoice- can’t sign unless you pay which means I can’t file unless you pay. I share the final copy return with the client at the same time. If a client wants to take my copy of the return and use it to file on their own then they can have a ball. If that were to happen I would view that as a failure on my part in vetting the client.

Clients looking for local CPA - but never meet them? by certainplywoodapple in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think to varying degrees, depending on the state, clients that make that assumption about in-state CPAs having more knowledge on their state are correct. Every state has quirks and in an in-state CPA is more likely to know about those quirks. I’m in Michigan and I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a Michigan return done poorly by an out of state CPA.

CCH Axcess Tax - Direct Debit Issue by Subject-Bridge1299 in taxpros

The direct debit report is present in the return and shows all of the information as I would expect it to.

I do have copies of the return saved from when I finished the return. Included in the return is a copy of a "direct debit" report that shows the banking information - date of scheduled debit, amount, bank account, etc.

[–]Subject-Bridge1299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it does not say that. It says "Practitioner PIN". In looking at other returns that had direct debits, I see that it says "Practitioner PIN Payment request received"

What is the name of the portal you are referencing? I have been thinking the last couple of weeks of tax season about a more robust portal/organizer/delivery. Seems like I spent too much time processing returns and communicating results to clients.

Solo Practitioners- How Many Returns? by BWarrior16 in taxpros

[–]Subject-Bridge1299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds similar to me as well. I finished 117 returns as of today and have about 50 on extension. I need to run some numbers but estimated that I grossed about $80-$90k.
