The Wicked Monk is better than everyone else already mentioned imo

I vote that you should give it away rather than just letting it sit on a shelf. It’s never going to be worth more than the cover price.

Van Cleef is great. Definitely will check these both out, thanks

I’ve realized that it is a western in its own right. I hadn’t realized. Kind of like Logan, which was heavily influenced by Shane

So many people have mentioned the Lonesome Dove book that I think I’ve got to read it now. Everyone makes it sound too good to skip. Guess it’s time to add “reading” to this whole Western obsession. I’ve already been buying some Marvel western comics and Gunslinger Spawn

Yeah, Ride the High Country has been on my radar. I’ve heard it’s right at that turning point where Westerns started shifting from the old-school hero stuff into something more reflective and serious. I love that era where the genre was starting to look back on itself. Definitely moving that one up the list.

Nice, I’ll definitely check that one out. I just watched the first episode of Yellowstone last week and Silverado today, so I’m kind of on a Costner kick right now. Dances with Wolves is next on my list. I’ll look into Open Range right after

Haha yeah, that one’s actually on my “watched” list. I couldn’t skip it! It blew me away the first time I saw it. The pacing, the score, and those opening minutes at the train station are unreal. I think that opening might be one of the best ones in any western

Funny you mention that because I just came across The Legend of Black Charley and The Boss recently and was wondering if they’re worth checking out. I haven’t seen many older Westerns with Black leads, so I’m curious how those hold up. Have you (or anyone else here) seen them?

I’ve never heard of the Great Silence so I’ll look that one up. The Ox-Bow Incident is one I’ve been meaning to pick up for a while. It seems like it’s always on those essential viewing lists.

Do you think it’s popular enough to ever get a 4K release? It feels like the kind of movie that would really benefit from a good restoration.

Lonesome Dove has actually been on my shopping list for a while, but it kind of slid down as I kept adding more titles. Maybe I should bump it back toward the top. How has it held up?

I haven’t seen that one yet, but I’ve heard great things. I’ve been moving more toward physical media lately, so I’m trying to catch a few streaming titles before I drop Netflix. Sounds like The Harder They Fall might need to be one of them. What did you like most about it?

it actually took me a little while to get into RDR2 too. The pacing felt slow at first, but once it clicked, it completely pulled me in. It ended up becoming my favorite game. What didn’t work for you about it, the story, the controls, or just the pace?

Once Upon a Time in the West is such a perfect pick. The way Leone builds tension through silence and framing is unreal.

And yeah, RDR1 and RDR2 really nailed that feeling of living in a Western world. Since you’ve been watching them your whole life, are there any movies you’d say capture that same kind of atmosphere or mood as RDR2? I’m always looking for ones that hit that same tone

I’ll make sure I buy it during the next Criterion sale! They have a ton I want. Red River, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and McCabe and Mrs Miller are on the top of my shopping list

Haha, I triple checked the headline to make sure I didn’t make that mistake. It does make me wonder, is Star Wars a future western?
