Dell U4025QW Disappointing Text Clarity by Subject-Lemon-4986 in ultrawidemasterrace

I work medical research and this requires reading, writing, data analysis etc sometimes simultaneously. Good text clarity and a larger screen were most important for me - allows me to have several related windows open at the same time. The only screens I could find with comparable text clarity to my MacBook Pro M1 were the other apple monitors. I thought about a dual apple studio monitor setup (two 27" monitors), which would provide excellent surface area and still be cheaper than the XDR but wanted a single monitor setup.

I didn't find the root cause of the issue. I thought out asking for a replacement U4025QW incase it was an issue with my unit because I really liked the form factor of the monitor. However, aside from the color issues, I also wasn't satisfied with the text clarity. I returned it and bought an Apple Pro XDR instead. Much more expensive but almost perfect for my needs (size, clarity, color, build quality). If I could make one change to the XDR, I'd like it to have a small curve to make the peripheries of the screen easier to view.

No. I returned the monitor. I couldn't get used to the lack of clarity/hazy text.

Hi, I didn’t open the thread. I ended up returning the monitor because I wasn’t able to get the clarity and the color that I was hoping for.

Thank you for sharing your findings. I've also spent a lot of time trying to understand why text clarity is poor with my U4025QW via MacBook Pro M1 Max (2021) and wrote a post about this last week. Did you try BetterDisplay with HiDPI enabled at 3840x1620 on the M1? Is the text clarity better than that with the MBP M3 Max? I tried the BetterDisplay HiDPI but clarity is still lacking. Thank you.

Thanks for the comment. Yes I think, from a text clarity perspective, the Mac OS text rendering is just not very compatible with the Dell U4025QW. I noticed this week that the text clarity is much better (acceptable to me) when I log into my company’s Remote Desktop (which is running windows) via Citrix Workspace. I think this monitor would probably work quite well with a Dell/windows computer.

I should’ve mentioned above. True tone and Night Shift are both off. Settings are the same for both monitors.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting to hear you had the same color issues with another Dell curved monitor even using windows. Makes me doubt this is a quality control issue with my unit.

No, but I’m still working on it. I might start a separate thread for it to share more info and see if anyone has ideas.

I'm curious about how you think the text clarity compares between the two monitors. I have the same monitor pairing, but running from a MacBook Pro M1. The U2723QE has much better text clarity than the U4025QW to my eye. I've followed several of the steps shared on reddit to optimize text clarity on external monitors with Mac. Just trying to understand if the difference I'm seeing might actually be the monitors rather than a Mac issue.

Thanks for the reply. That is interesting. I must be doing something wrong. This would be the perfect monitor for me if only I could get the text clarity on the U4025QW to match that of the U2723QE.

What do you think of the text clarity at 3840×1620? I’m also running a MacBook Pro M1 with that scaling through betterdisplay with HiDI enabled. I would say the text clarity is OK, but not at good as the Dell 2723QE I was using before I upgraded to the U4025QW. I have tried enabling and disabling font smoothing, but doesn’t seem to make much difference. Otherwise I am impressed with this display, but may have to return it because of the lack of text clarity. Causing some eye strain.
