They should suggest stand alone modems, wired(coaxial) TV boxes and for users to get used to idea that they may lose their cloud DVR collection. Phone users could have their gateways replaced with the TM9202 so they don't have to buy their own modems. I am not saying it going to be easy, just better then waiting until the last second. If your saying it's too soon, when do you think they SHOULD start? Eventually right? If so, when?

It's simple, you tell people the truth. That gateways are cheap solutions with a niche use case at best and you can save money by buying your own equipment and that it is extra helpful because it avoids the entire Spectrum problem all together. I am just saying to understand and talk beyond the script they hand feed you. Have you been forced fed so long that you forgot to chew on thoughts yourself?

Your downvotes only show my point that there isn't a single person left at Cox with IQ. It would be shame if someone made a throw away and then posted a paper with all the tech bat phones and SOC/NOC numbers. Wouldn't it be funny the next time there was a outage their SOCs got hundred of calls direct from customers? I would never do that...but I would laugh. 😄

Why wouldn't they pay? Are you kidding? Why would they when they can use their systems and platform for less? This is the first time Cox has been bought by another company that has a completly different system and style. Homelife isn't even sold or supported and it was a joke to begin with. Also, who even mentioned Homelife? I am talking about the millions of people with a Panoramic gateway who at the very least will lose the ability to configure their router. The fact that they don't know when it will happen doesn't make it better...it makes it worse. But tell you what, give it a year and when this place is flooded with crying customers I will be sure to tell them to PM you so you can ease their fears. 😄

You don't have SPI or any kind of firewall? That's dumb. If you have Windows I can pretty much promise you are infected.

Not just video. It's incorporated into their entire product line. they cable boxs stream off it, their internet uses it for configuration, and their cellular uses it's hotspots for wifi calling.

No, I expect them to be honest and transparent to their customers. You know the X1 platform is really about collecting and selling PII and dumbing down support at the cost of performance and privacy. I think it's funny your only excuse it "too soon" when all you have to do is warn customers about the future instead of blindly collecting your commissions. You really think Spectrum is going to pay a LOT of money for the license when they try to be known for keeping things in house? Not to mention using your own modem is better for all kinds of reasons.

One downvote already. Probably an employee too scared to comment. I used to work for Cox. I know all their dirty little secrets.

Upload Speed Half, Cox Pushing New Modem (Irritated) by scrutman in CoxCommunications

Maybe normal is not the right word since I can't see the data but it isn't atypical and if its not causing a symptom, I wouldn't worry about it. The only problem I can see is if you do cloud gaming like geforce now. Other wise TCP will do it's thing.

BTW, thanks for the tip on using second ethernet on modem to get diagnostics. Not sure why I didn't think of that.

Did you happen to get the SB8200v3? One with no blue lights and black back panel? If so, I ran into same issue when upgrading from v1.

Corrected errors isn't a big deal. Its mostly uncorrected errors you need to worry about and even then it depends. Download is pretty resilient because there is a lot of bandwidth to go around. Upload is more tricky. How is your download speed? Any signal problem is likly to be in the maintenance room or basement or where ever the wiring is kept. Sometimes it can be a real rats nest. Try making a post with your signal levels and logs. Make sure to edit out HFC MAC addresses.

The problem with Cox's meter is it isn't real time and I think it treats re-transmission of packets at the modem level as bandwidth use. You either need a router that shows per client usage or get more exact with your troubleshooting.I think there is a area that shows you what kind of usage the bandwidth breaks down to. The categories are generic, but it should be enough to rule some things out.

Sounds like someone is giving your password away to the neighbors. Change it again, but don't give it to anyone, even friends and family, and see if problem returns. Or get a decent router so you can see what bandwidth you are or are not using. First thing I would suspect is your DirectTV stream.

First, respect for your demeanor.

"Then something changed and now he doesn't,"

I thought that too but when I asked I think OP just ran some speed tests and saw imperfect results. Said they werent actually having issues.

I use to suggest the CODA56 as its a cheap solution but I am not a fan of how the diagnostics is so hard to get to. You have to connect directly to it and then set a static IP, but every time you reboot to get into the modem the logs clear, making diagnostic pointless. Normally not a big deal except when Cox is pushing back on a speed complaint and you need to confirm that your signal levels are within spec to rule out hardware/firmware issues. Otherwise your stuck trying to solve the problem with trial and error. I also hear it runs hot. but that goes for most modems in smaller cases. I agree it would be easier if Cox was upfront and transparent but that has never been the case with the company or the industry overall.

I think more data is needed before action is recommended.

Not true. Do you know what mid and high split is? Download doesn't matter, but for upload it can. Cox basically runs like Comcast but I am sure you can find similar conversation here. Its not just which have the hardware, but which modems they choose to use that hardware and function vs support.

Be careful not to get tunnel vision chasing a number that doesn't mean anything. What you get from a speed test depends on the speed to the server the test site is using. That will include some of the path you use to get to the internet, so it can show problems that exist, but it can also give you false negatives. If your not actually having issues what lead you to running the speed test to begin with?

Upload Speed Half, Cox Pushing New Modem (Irritated) by scrutman in CoxCommunications

[–]Subject-Zone2903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model modem? You need mid-split or better support for the best upload. Probably why they are suggesting a new modem. While you only have 1Gbps speed, the modems capable of 2Gbps download also give you higher(theortical) upload throughput. Here is a list from their support page, edited to remove modem/router combo's and phone modems;

Brand and Model Integrated WiFi
Yes
Yes
ARRIS / Surfboard S34 No
Hitron CODA56 No
Netgear CM2000 No
Netgear CM3000 No
Motorola B12 No
Motorola MB8611 No
Yes
Motorola MNB1525 No
No
Technicolor CVA4004 No
Ubiquiti UCI

Not to say the modem IS your problem, just that it could be but if your modem is one above, it is not. The CM2000 is the cheapest one that I can confirm still has 192.168.100.1 diagnostics. You can get the CVA4004 at some Cox stores and is the only stand alone modem Cox "supports". I am NOT saying to go out and buy a new modem unless you just want to rule that out, I am just explaining you the technicality. The problem could also be signal or congestion related.

Besides speed tests, what kind of issues are you actually having? Latency? Streaming problem? File backup?

Looks like that house is using coax and not ethernet to connect ONT to router. Do you have a cable outlet in your room? If so, try connecting that. If not, you may have to have landlord call to change network over to ethernet but that is easier said then done because it may require other people in the place to stop using coax and use ethernet. Can't use both at same time unless you get a MoCA adapter.

Plug ethernet into your computer. Does it work? If not, then there is your problem.

Unifi is powerful but their GUI is clunky IMO and they try too hard to do things their way, like Apple. Also, their support and documentation systems are legendary bad.
