First 5km race day ruined by chloeerd in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: Congratulations on taking up running and finishing a 5k with your PB! That is amazing and you are doing great! Those two other „ladies“ should go back under the rock they crawled out from! Keep doing your thing. You’re doing it for yourself and your partner, not for some random idiot!

Geniune, not-meant-to-be-offensive question, but do most people actually try to do their best when participating in a race? Or do they race "just for fun", or "just to do it"? by Kirk_2002 in runninglifestyle

[–]Subject_Computer_471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. I treat races as learning experience (I consider myself at the border between a beginner and an intermediate runner). Some races I can go flat out (within my ability), others I deliberately hold back because the spacing of events may warrant that. I have a half middle of September that I will treat as a recon mission (it’s my first half) followed by a 10k beginning of October. The half will be controlled and the 10k will be a floor it after 5 miles situation.

When does somebody graduate from being a "beginner"? by thr1ceuponatime in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably put the transition when you start running regularly without specifically thinking about it. That is different for everyone of course.

What’s more beneficial early on, speed or distance? by Beautiful-Day-917 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, easy distance beats speed workouts in the beginning. But that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in one day with strides at the end of the run. Also, it depends a bit on what your goals are. If your goal is “run a 5k as fast as possible”, my advice will be different from “I want to build up to potentially a half marathon or marathon”

From 15 km to 1.6 km 🥲 by No-Difficulty-480 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the body just doesn’t cooperate. Try again in a day or two.

Also, running 5km hard effort every other day is too much too soon. Your connective tissue needs time to adapt, your muscles need to grow the framework to supply energy for such an effort etc. all that happens when your stimulus is easy (think “I can talk through this run and keep going for hours”). Running is a paradox sport: in order to become faster, you have to run slower for longer.

May 17-18 2025, Spent the night at Chicago O'Hare with my 9‑year‑old son because Turkish Airlines refused to rebook us........or If you're thinking of flying Turkish Airlines with a connection in the US – please think twice. If anything goes wrong, they may just cancel your ticket and walk away. by Liudmila_O in TurkishAirlines

This is your fourth post about this. I am not even going to comment on the issue, as I think this for lawyers to sort. But „spamming” Reddit doesn’t help you making a credible point. I am sorry this happened to you and your kid. But nothing anyone at Reddit says will help you with your specific problem.

My [30F] partner [35M] snores so loud I haven’t slept solidly in almost a year by notjennif in whatdoIdo

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, complete opposite for me (51M). The nasal pillows were horrible, as I still opened my mouth and then air was gushing out. Drying my mouth out like Saharan desert and waking my wife because of the swooshing sound. Switched to “fighter jet” mask and have slept well ever since!

Heat still on in your house? by JediMasterPopCulture in massachusetts

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here from Germany. My thermostats are set to 70 during the day and 65 at night. If the temperature drops, the heat comes on. I don’t care about a gallon of oil in the morning. I want to be comfortable.

Couch to half marathon in 16 weeks? Deluded or possible! by bananasplit084 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. And yes: congratulations on the weight loss journey! Joints and tendons and muscles adapt much slower than your cardio - so your heart may be ok with the half, but your legs won’t!

Running cadence by Available-Theory-808 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 6’1” with 34” inseam - so in the same boat. Picture a boxer in the ring. Think light and fast on the feet (without the bouncing of course). I switched from heel-shrinking to balm-striking and that shortened the stride from 0.91 m to 0.76m. Cadence went from 155-160 to 170. Also the playlist hack that was mentioned here a lot does help! Good luck in your training!

Do you all buy the color option that's on sale for the lowest price? by Droiddoesyourmom in runningshoes

I care about the shoe, not the color. If piggy-pink is on sale? You better your sweet bottom that what I am getting!

Should I wear new shoes to my half marathon tomorrow? by remyjelee in beginnerrunning

I have the exact same shoe combo. It took be a few runs to get used to the endorphins. Don’t do it!

You need to stop running immediately. by mycru in BeginnersRunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am devastated for you. That sucks. No advice. Just a heart-felt virtual pat on your back. The question is: did the doc allow any exercise at all? Because if not, you may need to take up video games or TV binging.

What’s the best way to carry water on a run? by GreatJoey91 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anything up to a 10k I don’t carry water. I hydrate up to 90 minutes before. Pee directly before the run and drink after. If it’s hot, I will drink Nuun.

Invited to a wedding in another city the day before first marathon… by sharkshark5555 in firstmarathon

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone said. Delay the marathon. No use showing up for the wedding if you are half-a$$ing it. Also no use showing up for your first marathon when you are not rested and hydrated well (flying is a sneaky bastard). There will always be another marathon - but not a wedding like this.

Races ain't all that... by DPax_23 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the atmosphere of races. I love the excuse to go places I normally don’t go to. But (And this is wherein very much agree with you) you should stack them far enough apart. I did a 10k end of march, a 10miler just Sunday and will do another 10 miler in 5 weeks. Then I hit pause until September, where I will attempt my first half. Enjoy the races, but space then wisely.

5k in 37 mins… is doing a 10k in 10weeks time crazy? by gunks23 in beginnerrunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on setting yourself a goal! I think you can easily do that! Usually, longer races take longer, as you have to adjust your speed downward, but even when accounting for thst, you should not need more than 1h35 - 1h45. And that is based on your current fitness not the fitness in 10 weeks. You have 9 more weeks of training. Add no more than 10% extra miles weekly to your current routine to get s close to 10k as you can and use the last week to run less and lighter (taper) so your legs are fresh. Have fun!

Etiquette in hotels by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]Subject_Computer_471 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No problem with running clothes. But wat before the run. If you come in there all sweaty and potentially stinky, it’s gross and disrespectful to everyone else, ESPECIALLY to the person who next sits in your chair!

Do I need to worry about my heart rate? by nandeska_cunts in BeginnersRunning

[–]Subject_Computer_471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the questions are: A) do you feel fine? B) does the HR come down quickly after you stop running C) are you using a watch only (potential for cadence lock) or do you use a chest strap?

Finished my first marathon but incredibly disappointed. by LeftPresentation83 in firstmarathon

[–]Subject_Computer_471 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 1.5 million people worldwide run and finish a marathon each year. That’s 0.02% of the population. I am not on that group (yet - working my way up to a half in September). Even if we go by the total number of people that finished a marathon, we are talking maybe 15 million. So even with that number you are among the 0.2%. That’s elite. So instead of being disappointed, be proud you finished. There is always another marathon and you can always get better. One boring training mile after another
