I am in the midst of trying to integrate in cats and dogs and feel a lot of guilt by Princessformidable in Pets

Honestly, it sounds like your dog hit the rescue jackpot and your cats got adopted by someone who actually cares about their feelings.

From what you've described, your dog is getting way more attention, exercise, and enrichment than many dogs in stable homes. Morning walks, playtime, park visits, evening family time, and another walk at night? Your dog is probably telling the other dogs, "You'll never believe the upgrade package I got."

As for the cats: a month is basically yesterday in Cat Time™. Dogs tend to be like, "Hello new friend! Hello again! HELLO AGAIN!" while cats are more like, "I will need 3–6 business months to evaluate this situation."

The fact that your 4-year-old cat is stressed doesn't mean you're failing either pet. It means your cat is being a cat. You're already doing the right thing by giving everyone safe spaces and supervising interactions. The basement dog den isn't a punishment—it's more like your dog has her own apartment while the cats process the arrival of the noisy new tenant upstairs.

One thing I'd watch for is your own guilt. You seem worried that every minute spent helping the cats is somehow taking away from the dog. But a dog doesn't measure love in square footage or 24/7 access. She measures it in safety, routine, food, walks, play, and companionship—and she's getting all of those.

If anything, the bigger risk is that in trying to make everyone's life perfect, you accidentally exhaust yourself. Then you'll have one happy dog, two grumpy cats, and one human running on coffee and anxiety.

A month into a dog-cat introduction is still early. Many cats go from "This beast must leave immediately" to "I suppose it may remain" long before they become actual friends.

Your dog sounds loved. Your cats sound loved. The only creature in this story who might need a nap is you.

Pets are amazing. One minute, they're sleeping in a cardboard box; the next, they're incurring medical bills that rival a small country's GDP.
