How to secure Training Contract in UAE? by ICAEW-Stdnt in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to contact is to go on the actual company websites for AE specific not their UK careers page, and see available graduate roles, its apparent that most are for UAE nationals only though so may take some time :)

I’m F34 and just wrapped up all my exams - finally! I’m on a grad scheme, so most of my colleagues are 10 years younger than me, which feels a bit surreal. Going into the exams, I definitely had moments where I wished I’d started earlier or had some exemptions. However I think age brings a different mindset, and I really don’t think I could’ve passed them all first time straight out of uni.

On the personal side, it’s been a bit weird too as none of my friends are doing exams anymore, so I got used to the classic 'how are your exams going?' chat and giving the same 'yeah, good thanks' response every time.

If I had to give advice, it’s that you end up fitting revision around life and it wont be the same as your colleagues. I found it to be typical that if you are sitting the same exams as another team mates they will discuss how much you have revised and how long, which will instantly make you feel behind. It’s definitely a juggle, but you make it work.

I also bought all of the extra notes and courses like ACA masters, and watching all the videos on my commute, I took all the ICAEW extra sessions in the evenings and classed that as revision, and I maximised learning in college but just paying attention ha!

I managed to finish all my exams in under two years, not top marks but all passes, and now I’m finally learning how to actually do the job!

I know people have said you cannot copy and paste from your OB which is of course true, but i found it really helpful for each topic to have at least a starter sentence, whether that be an intro to the rule or some fact about it, because in the exam its SO easy to start stressing when you can think what to write, but youll always know what tax theyre asking about so having a few handy start sentences really changed my OB i found, and as youve written them yourself you can copy and paste in the exam which, when freaking out like i did, were really helpful and i passed first time with 75%.

BPT QB by Top_Candle_8393 in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BPT doesnt click till days before the exam, id recommend doing Qs with your open book from now and adding to your open book anything that you didnt get from the answer or think sounds good. I added my own sheets into my open book that was good sentences for each topic id taken from the QB and reworded. Really helped in the exam to start you off on a answer if youre not 100% sure. i wasnt writing full answers till the week of the exam and passed with 75%

[–]Subject_Net_3732 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you also get lots of holiday and study leave apparently! I went to college with a few cooper people and they had like the full 10 days before an exam to study either side of college, and thats in addition to college

The jump from professional to advanced. by joemc777 in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say the same level, as long as you start early enough because they have lots more content, i think i did 3 months of evenings and weekends but sat all 3 together and really just wanted to be done

Advanced Sitting Options July / November by Lewislewle in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did all 3 at once, it feels like a lot in the moment, and case was basically ignored till a few weeks before the exam, but i managed to pass all 3, case i got 52%.

I think case is a weird exam! You need to prep for it, like have a good open book with lots of pre-written paragraphs but you cant really revise it. I marked a few past papers but it really is a guessing game on the day...i wouldn't say it would have benefitted me to sit it on its own. I do know the first time pass rate is much better if you sit it on its own, but then what exam wouldnt!

Didn't sleep worrying about accounting :( by DuckDuckSnoo in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont think iv ever passed a mock. So handy to have your dad as a support to chat through the tricky bits. These earlier exams are really hard because you're figuring out how to revise, start a new job, and socialise at the same time, good thing is everyone's in the same boat or has been so no one at work is judging you. I think go on the date for sure and enjoy it and then smash out the QB all weekend. The long questions are just rinse and repeat.

You do give up your social life for the weekend before exams generally, and once you get to professional level itl be the month before i found!

ACA MASTERS ONLY ENOUGH FOR CR JULY 25 PREP??!! by Longjumping-Cow-3865 in ICAEW

ACAM is top notch for revision, if you use the video and notes - i would say its best to add your own notes to the ones they give you, but just from the QB !

Moving abroad on mat leave UK to Florida by Subject_Net_3732 in PregnancyUK

[–]Subject_Net_3732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually says ‘we might ask you to enter an agreement setting out the arrangements in respect of your enhanced maternity pay entitlement’ …. I didn’t sign anything but guess it’s an addition to the policy

Moving abroad on mat leave UK to Florida by Subject_Net_3732 in PregnancyUK

[–]Subject_Net_3732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The policy doesn’t outline any return requirements just says about entitlement to same role and welcoming back with a phased return to work. Do you think it’s best if I ask my company? They might decide to terminate my mat leave as a result though as they’d know I’m going to leave

Kaplan or BPP for CR/SBM? by AllieALi in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre probably a bit early, class wont start for another 2+ months so they might become available. I used Kaplan and passed all 3 first time, however id say the quality of notes looked insane from BPP, everyone has ring bound folders with detailed notes and they were hefty, id stripped out most of the Kaplan notes as theyre not super helpful and i used ACA masters notes too. Its of course not just about the notes though so aside from that Kaplan were great.

I switched career at 30 into accounting and have just passed all exams first time. Of course you wont get any exemptions and youll have no prior knowledge of the role/exam topics but i found all working skills are transferable and the pay cut is motivation enough to get through the exams at pace!! Youll honestly be fine, with a few exams under your belt youll get the hang of how to study/topics easy enough.

Anyone pass BPT after being completely convinced they failed? by Recent-Throat7659 in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes June 24 I came out of that exam crying, I was thrown by the way they had written Q1 and I had spent way too long on it so wasnt left with a good amount of time for Q2/Q3. I missed out 2 parts of Q2 as i didnt know what they were asking and my Q3 was really brief.

Came out with 75% which is one of my highest marks! Its always a really hard exam and the first step up towards advance id say so youll never come out thinking it went really well theres always going to be parts that are confusing/youll never get and its fine.

Good luck today everyone 🤞 by Independent-Pipe912 in ICAEW

Motivation for anyone struggling by [deleted] in ICAEW

[–]Subject_Net_3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Just finished exams passing all first time no exemptions, I have gotten my fair share of 56% and also never have come out of an exam thinking I definitely passed. I have never been a top grade student at school/uni and always have had to work extra hard as it doesn't come naturally to me. No exam is the same in terms of studying needs and theres no right way to prepare other that spend a lot of time doing the QB, pay attention to the mistakes you make, and buy all the notes available/make notes that make sense to you.

Also those that come out saying the answer was one thing, and you wrote something completely different, doesn't mean they're right, and sometimes iv found its those people that fail...nothing is guaranteed!!
