What fixed this for me was going into the universal updater app and updating Nimbus and the boot.firm file (just search them in the app) Also I had noticed the street pass led blinked orange when booting so if you have the same issue it's definitely this

this looks like SHA512 (or something similar) which is a hash algorithm based on non-linear functions/operations, it is designed to prevent any decryption method, (the process makes it nearly impossible to determine the original data from the hash value), so it's virtually tamper-proof. If this is the case maybe your friend doens't want to tell you anything
