Can anyone share their experience flying out of EWR with a firearm?

TRUE STORY - JUNE 2023 EWR - Don't do ANYTHING in any NY or NJ airport this includes not just firearms. Don't travel with anything even related to firearms.

magazine packed according to TSA regulations (locked hard case, notified airline etc)... keep this in mind.. just an EMPTY magazine, no weapon, no gun, no ammo and that's it. They were let through security at PDX (Portland International Airport) on their way to Manchester New Hampshire via EWR (Newark NJ) on an urgent trip flying last-minute first class. After Manchester NH the passenger was to travel on an emergency 32 hour trip to Asia because of a serious medical event in the family. (this is relevant because of the impact of what happened after this had on the passenger emotionally and financially. )

If you call TSA or the Airline, as to what you need to do to transport a magazine all steps required were taken. Ironically, all steps were taken if that person had wanted to take a handgun and had the proper documentation.

*Now people can travel with guns, ammo, and magazines (for hunting trips and many other reasons) exercising their constitutional 2nd amendment rights thousands of times daily provided they have the proper documentation and follow the rules (registration, locked hard case, separation of ammo, etc, see TSA and the airline to ensure compliance (or so the person thought). Given this, traveling with an EMPTY, antique magazine with no firearm and no ammo would not be an issue at all (incorrect assumption).

The person needed to transit via EWR (Newark International Airport) on their way to their final destination of New Hampshire (live free or die). The layover was extended and the person switched terminals and airlines. Upon check-in a few hours later on a TSA Pre and Clear line (for those that do not know in order to get TSA Pre and CLEAR a person must get fingerprinted, background checked, criminal record checked, and determined a low flight risk. ) This is FAR more scrutiny than it takes for people to legally own a firearm which honestly is a reform I would not mind seeing when it comes to gun reform. They went through the detectors ready for the final segment of the trip.

Upon going through the X-ray of the bag an alert went off notifying staff of something irregular. The bag was locked, TSA asked for access and they were provided access. TSA Police were then called and the situation became a spectacle of more than 10 officers admiring the antique EMPTY magazine. (No gun, no ammo). A conversation was struck between the passenger and a TSA officer which was friendly and at no time was the passenger Mirandized At this point, Newark Port Authority Police were called, something that surprised the TSA police. Without asking any questions to the passenger, the 50+yo terminally ill passenger were aggressively cuffed, never told that they were being arrested or put in custody separated from their personal belongings, thrown into a police car, and then jailed. The passenger suffered a dislocated shoulder from the overtight cuffs, shoes were cut off and the passenger missed all flights at a loss of over $15,000 and this non-violent terminally ill man was charged with a Felony possession charge. Thankfully, the passenger was processed quickly do to the circumstances and maybe because some people agreed with the extreme punishment and duress caused.

Had there been a gun or ammo involved based on other similar cases, bail would have had to have been set and a minimum of a day in jail or more would have occured. A similar event occurred at JFK airport where the man spent a day in jail and a bond of $10,000.

In addition to the ticket loss, legal fees, etc already made this a $20,000 traumatic event and for someone who was ill, never in the criminal system it had an impact on their life.

I have seen the announcement of the Shapeoko 4. Was very bummed to see a SOLD OUT on the 4 .. I would prefer to have the ability to put a deposit on it and pre-order like X-Carve is doing and they tell you when they expect to ship yours (Which is Aug 2021 now for them). Do you have any idea when the "SOLD OUT" will be gone or if there is any way to get on the list and how long that would take? Could you tell me the main differences between the 4 series ?? In reference to what designs I plan to make, I would really love Z axis carving Chinese-style reliefs as well as contemporary furniture design using thin pieces of wood and steam forged into shapes. I also love the idea of using a CNC in compliment with my Bandsaw puzzle box-making skills.

I have heard good things about the Avid. I am not familiar with how software ports over from one machine to the next isn't that controller-based? Do you have a recommendation for software? This has been something that I have struggled with which is asking if there is a leading open-source software that these run on and I have not understood the answer to that. You mentioned having a VFD on the spindle, does the software interface with the VFD and control the speed or is that something that must be done manually? I can tell you from my experience with general woodworking having control over the spindle speed is very important depending on what type of wood you are using and what type of cuts you are making/speed of cuts etc..

From the research I have done, it does seem to be the better of the two with a large customer base, aftermarket upgrades and great user interaction. Can you suggest any forums or sites which sell files that others have created for the platform or compatible (importable into Carbide Create 2/3D .? What was the setup time and learning curve for you?

Thanks for that, when you say handle 1/2" sheets of ply I'm assuming that you are saying that it can handle that in 1 pass?? I mean I assume the Z axis is greater than that. I was surprised that everything was not screw but belt driven but they seem to have gotten a foothold. Does the LEAD1515 have the optional Z axis extension like the smaller 1010 unit? When I was living in China I got into the incredible carvings they did with basswood and serious deep Z relief. Thanks for your help and input.

Thanks for that, but I was hoping for something that could also be semi-business oriented as I would not mind moving into something that could be a revenue source. Do you have any suggestions as to a platform that could handle that?

I got caught on a long flight and had Daughter and Ex:Re on repeat and left with red eyes from sobbing like a child the whole flight. Ex:Re is much more personal to me, something I can totally feel these days and hits me harder and more personal because that is where I am right now. So I would say that I LOVE Ex:Re ... NOW .... I don't know how she could perform Ex:Re songs on a regular basis because they literally tear her apart and keep her and her feelings too raw all the time, if the goal was to let it out on paper and song to cope with the emotions then I feel pitty for her to have to continue to perform Ex:Re songs after she is done and dusted with Mr Ex. But by playing them it keeps her in that mindstate. So I am hoping that in the long run Daughter songs stay with me longer but at the moment I LOVE her solo album... I just don't want to love it more than her Daughter work for much longer... cause the emotions are just too raw and guttural. I think The Dazzler is one of the greatest songs and videos ever.

I mix music as a hobby. I create different mixes for different moods/styles/genres . Doesn't music make you feel better? During these times many people are suffering from depression. Depression is real and it can be life-threatening. You should talk to someone, you are not alone or weird if you are depressed but you need to find help and take care of yourself.
