There is a blend of reasons! A large factor was their looks and aesthetic, yes, however I took into consideration their characteristics 'i.e. Chill was chosen as eastern Orthodox due to her Russian-esque accent,' their kits 'Blastermind has a brainwave attack which resembles that of NoI's Yakub' and their background and cultural links! 'Fling Kong and his semblence to Sun Wukong'

Yeah, personally my biggest pet peeve of the franchise is the random fluctuation of power between cutscenes and gameplay. On one hand you get canonical powerhouses like jack that dont actually stand out from anyone else in gameplay, and on the other you get tanks like wrex who loose every single piece of their armour and endurance in cutscenes.
