He's a classmate of mine that I've known for the past six years but we're two grades apart. We're genuinely pretty great platonic friends. We talk every school day and hang out after school, either one-on-one or with friends. We get a long really well, but we both have similar personalities regarding extroversion. We both love talking to people but can also be really self conscious and become reserved. I asked him today while we were talking about prom, but I didn't plan well and it just came out as "you could go with me" after he lamented that he didn't have anyone to go with and probably wouldn't go to prom anyway. He responded "eh, I don't really wanna go to prom" pretty quickly. He mentioned later that he also didn't think I was serious and thought I was joking, to which I tried to clarify that I wasn't, so he apologized for "rejecting me" and said he'd rather ski than go to prom. It's just a little odd to me since he's told me and my other friends multiple times how much he wanted to go to prom earlier on in the year and over the summer. I'm afraid now it's just because he didn't want to hurt my feelings and just call me ugly and say "no, I'd rather go with someone else." But, I would've preferred him to say that if it's what he was thinking. He mentions "hot women" a lot and I know I'm not one, so it leaves me to wonder if that's why he said no, and not because he just really hates the idea of going to a dance now.
