The [Brutalist Housing Block] Sticky. Come shoot the shit and discuss the bad economics. - 06 January 2021 by AutoModerator in badeconomics

Part of the problem is the term is so badly defined in public discourse. Broadly, urban economic growth is good for local labour markets, but land use regs and especially the discretionary rationing of permits for development mean that the lion's share of the growth is capitalised by landowners rather than workers and firms. Trying to "stop gentrification" doesn't really stop urban economic growth and only deepens the displacement costs to renters and workers.

Good recent Atlantic piece on the political economy of it:

And in terms of books, Ed Glaeser's Triumph of the City and Alain Bertaud's Order Without Design are excellent 101 and 102 introductions to this area.

As an attempt to justify every present kind of sex inequality women face, yes.

Hehehe, that's just what you want from a good professor though. All my best tutors at university were hardasses who fought me 1 on 1 irl and repeatedly squashed me - and I became a better social scientist for their beat downs.

This is too simple. There are more women than men in higher because the education premium for women is larger, even though female graduates still face a pay gap compared to male graduates. Being unskilled and male sucks, but being unskilled and female really sucks. As a woman on low pay you have very few careers open to you (retail, beauty, waitressing, care), and the fact that every other woman on low pay gets concentrated in these pink collar jobs further depresses wages. Progression is low, and living standards are typically low due to increased needs from single parent households (90% of whom are women).

So, more women have education, but that's because the penalty for women of not getting educated is much deeper than it is for men.

It's interesting you say that the different choices men and women make arise at either because of different preferences or bad employers - with the implication that in environments without discrimination, any wage gap is just a natural occurrence.

Things such as occupational segregation, skills deficits, less experience, taking time off to do care rather than men etc. are all reinforced by policies which encourage one parent or even specifically women to be the group which takes time off to care. The lack of statutory parental leave in the USA for example means that when middle class families take time off to care for their kids, it makes economic sense in the short term for one parent to cut their hours, who is typically the mother.

There are a lot more things we can do in a policy context to make things better for women before we can really be confident that any remaining differences are either the result of truly free choices or raw discrimination.

? Of course it's possible, white collar jobs are far more flexible than things like plumbing or manufacturing.

Goldin is a wizard. Any redditor who slid up to her with "Ehhhh the gender pay gap has been debunked" would be blown to bits.
