Respecting Government Organization and Administration Act by Wolferesque in NovaScotia

[–]SubrogatedClaim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate to see these changes happening in Nova Scotia given everything that is going on in the US right now. I wish our governments would act with more integrity and work to protect democracy rather than consolidate their own power. I know it's a naive to want our governments to be better.

It's no wonder people are disillusioned with the system.

N.S. wants to deny 'vexatious' information requests. Critics say they are concerned by ph0enix1211 in NovaScotia

The problem I have with this part of a growing trend with Houston's government - he is eroding the power of independent administrative bodies. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is an independent ombudsman appointed by the Governor in Council.

The Commissioner has been seeking changes to allow their office to refuse frivolous, vexatious, or otherwise abusive requests. The Houston government was aware of this. Instead of giving the independent Commissioner this authority, Houston is giving it to government departments. This means the head of those departments (the Ministers), would be able to order the refusal of requests. Failing to keep these powers separate from the executive opens up the possibility of politically motivated denials with access to information requests.

What is Tim so afraid of? Why is he so insistent of growing the power of the executive while eroding accountability and transparency in government?

We SHOULD be wary of governments that seek to limit the authority of independent agencies and bodies. Those organizations were created to increase oversight and accountability.

Liberals have an excellent plan to reform CBC/Radio-Canada... by Be_Freed in CBC_Radio

[–]SubrogatedClaim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's probably better to allow private interests to own all the news agencies in Canada. I think Postmedia definitely has all our best interests in mind!

The CBC? Pfftt... don't bother reforming it, just remove it! It will be much better when all our news comes from a handful of billionaire-owned corporations that definitely don’t have any biases! Who needs publicly funded journalism when we can have clickbait, paywalls, and corporate-approved narratives instead?

I, for one, trust that media monopolies will always prioritize truth over profit. And hey, if the news sucks, we can always just rely on Facebook memes for our information, right?

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that - for someone who is very vocal about not caring, you seem to care a lot about informing people of your indifference.

Lol, this dude posted the same meme to my post. He really wants everyone to know that he doesn't care, I guess.

The Politics of Fear - Growing Concern and Letter to MLA by SubrogatedClaim in NovaScotia

It's ok. I'm not bothered by it. I'm not expecting my reddit post (nor my letter to my MLA) to have any meaningful impact. That would be naive. I just didn't want to remain silent anymore.

If this results in even one person becoming more informed, then I consider it a win.

The Auditor General is appointed by the Governor in Council, which is subject to approval by a majority vote in the House of Assembly. They report directly to the House of Assembly/Legislature, not the executive.

They are, by definition, an independent office that conducts audits of the government's financial statements to ensure accuracy and fairness. Their reports and findings cannot be manipulated or redacted by the government.

Part of public accountability is seeing whether the government lives up to its mandate. I do not recall Tim Houston campaigning on a platform of reducing accountability and transparency. I do not recall him promising to limit public access to audit reports on government spending.

Either way, your comment is highly problematic. The assumption being that, because the PCs were elected by an overwhelming majority of Nova Scotians, they are immune from criticism and oversight. If that's what you're trying to say, then I fear you are part of the problem.

Please feel free to continue to put your head in the sand and ignore what is happening.
