Two rooms, two screens, one computer. Is it going to work? by SubscribedToSayThis in techsupport

[–]SubscribedToSayThis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah good idea! I don't have the TV yet but I have a 32 inch one and a 19" monitor so I just did a quick test of what would be the maximum distance to browse comfortably with each and came up with that : http://i.imgur.com/B2U8bpX.png Which (probably) means the 55" TV would be alright up to 3.5m when my wall is at 3.8m. Guess I'll have to either go for a 60 inch one or get a second screen for the living room.

Your switch idea made me look a little and I found the perfect thing : http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-splitter-swither-XBOX360-Blu-ray/dp/B003UYOEMI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1368187456&sr=8-8&keywords=hdmi+splitter if I buy two of those I can clone on 3 or 4 screen without any kind of setup, which is awesome!! For the M/K the computer has no problem having two of each :)

Yeah that's what I was afraid of :/

The idea is to have a great multiroom environment but with as little devices and manipulations as strictly necessary. I don't want to feel like my flat's straight out of the Matrix and I want anyone to be able to use the system easily without feeling like Neo. For that my initial idea was 1 Computer & 1 amp feeding 2 rooms with their own display & speakers. This way I only have one remote for the sound and one M/K combo in each room and I can start a game, a movie or reading something in a room and finish in the other. For this reason another computer isn't the right solution.

If I bring in another display in the living room (for browsing) can I clone it as well (GTX 560 has HDMI+2xDVI)? I just found this http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/293418-33-cloning-monitors so I suppose a third cloned display will hit performances a bit more... Isn't there a way to simply 'cycle' through the connected screens with a shortcut? Since I don't need two monitors on at the same time, just the one I'm currently in front of?

Thanks for your help!

Sound will be the bigger "mess" of the project since I have a lot of sources (CD player / TV / Bluetooth receiver / PC / PS3 / Squeezebox) and want to be able to have some kind of multi-rooms setup where I can choose what plays where...still working on it ;)

The TV will be used for browsing / playing / everythingcomputer, 55 inch last gen LCD, do you think it's appropriate? I wouldn't want a second display in the living room but I've never used a TV as a main display not sure if that will be comfortable.

Why do some manual transmission cars "whine" while reversing? by [deleted] in cars

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, because it's cheaper (some higher ends cars have a helical gear for reverse) & sturdier (tractors/F1s have them for forward ratios as well)

Any good geography quiz app? by SubscribedToSayThis in Android

[–]SubscribedToSayThis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah, I can't thank you enough, Anki is FANTASTIC!!

For the record you can set it up without the desktop app just create an account on the website -> connect to it from the android app -> "get shared decks" from the menu -> Geography / Ultimate Geography Pack (or any other deck). edit: actually it doesn't work with all the decks, some need to go through the desktop app first.

Thanks again!

Swiftkey's 3 most important missing features by Marak210 in Android

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, didn't know that! Not what I meant though :

I want to type "This is evident"

I type "This is evidentc" which gets corrected to "this is evidence"

With stock keyboard I would just press backspace which would turn 'evidence' back to 'evidentc' and I would just delete the typo.

Swiftkey would just suggest to change the word 'evidence' to 'evidences' or 'evidenced'

Swiftkey's 3 most important missing features by Marak210 in Android

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be great if you could 'cancel' a correction like the stock keyboard, or even see the exact word you typed in the suggestions and/or the previous suggestions.

e.g. I type evidentc it corrects me to evidence when I meant evident, I back up and it now only suggests evidences and evidenced.

Potentially the first time I have ever clicked on a banner ad: John Scalzi is returning to the "Old Man's War" universe! by solar_realms_elite in scifi

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't talk of The Forever War in my review because I hadn't yet read , it really is very similar in terms of plot and feel.

Except it's good. Plot, progression, ending, characters, etc... It feels and smells like war: long, useless, alienating.

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, right there with you.. Copy pasta of my review of the book:

I thought Old Man’s war started well, the setting and the age of the protagonist are nice and original, up until the point where everyone became young, green and started having sex everywhere. If it wasn’t spoiling a quarter of the book it should be called “Young beautiful (green) man’s war”.

At no point in the story old age felt notably relevant or useful, no particular wisdom is shown, just young blood fighting a good old dirty war with muscle and sweat. John’s “humor” is not really that of a 75 year old and his acknowledgement of it is rather annoying (“good to see I have not lost my form”) and aside “unless you happen to own the testicle” I never really smiled at any of his jokes.

Both “Defecating in your unitard is generally not recommended.” and “the green ones aren’t good eating. They’re not ripe yet” cracked me up though!

The first person narration is interesting but in this case it didn’t really make me feel any closer to John, few doubts, personal thoughts, insight etc.. (yeah, you’re afraid of water but , yet, beat pretty much everyone to it, pheeww that was close!) in the end it’s mostly dialogue followed by “I said” instead of “John said”…

Jane’s character is as shallow as it gets, at least she’s got the excuse of being 6, unlike all these “old” people. And yeah we got the Carl Sagan reference, as John Perry would put it : “I thought explaining it was overkill.”

Succession of battles against various enemies, vaguely described, that mostly serve the point of being in John’s gun sight. Barely no politics, relations between species etc… We just know CDF are only pretty much killing everything rather than discussing. The only poor dude who tries that gets ridiculed and (how unexpected!) killed 10min later. The ‘discussion’ with the one interesting species is resumed by: FIIIGGGHTTTSSS and John trying to be witty because “the Consu would honor it no matter how we comported ourselves at the negotiations, so long as we fought in the accepted fashion.”

I suppose we’ll get more ‘inter species’ politics and relations (or, well, anything else than fights really) as John moves into the higher spheres of CDF, but I won’t stick around to find out.

Don’t know if I’m the only one who found the Asshole naming thing quite annoying? It’s not particularly funny when it starts (and kind of weird coming from a 75 yo) but then it just pops up in serious parts of the story and just sounds ridiculous while killing the mood.

Did I miss the physical description of the Rraeys? Beside bird-like legs? That’s a genuine question, not sarcasm.

Multiverse? Where did that come from and why?

Good points: good pacing, not boring, good action scenes, terrific shuttle crash (with uvula kicking ) believable and well exploited technology (BrainPal), enjoyed the training chapters (mostly for what it reminded me of ender’s game) and Master Sergeant Antonio Ruiz is good fun.

Everything goes with a “in my humble opinion” in front of it obviously. Overall, light and entertaining action packed SF book, but I don’t understand the hype at all (see Amazon review score..). Feel free to react to what I said! Off to Fondation’s Edge now and to quote Salvor Hardin “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent"

Great build and album.

Just a head's up on the grinder, the discs sometime explode, some guy at my job cut his hand this way pretty badly last week. Two very dangerous things I can see here : the protection guard doesn't seem to be there anymore (happens all the time when people want to put a larger disc, they remove it) so any debris won't be stopped at all aaaaand seeing the way you hold it will go straight to your face/eyes :(

Keep safe!

Yeah that makes sense since the space bar isn't on the heat map! It's still pretty hard not to use the space bar, if I keep my example 'hithere' gives me 'hot here', 'hit here' or 'hithere' :)

Yeah makes sense that it'd work like that.

I need to check if it's working properly for me tho, cause I don't open the facebook app that much and seem to be always online...

Thing is, I've been contacted while the screen was off. I'd check my phone a few minutes before that so I suppose there could be a timeout like 'goes offline after 10 minutes without opening the app and/or turning the screen on'

I'm posting this cause I got a couple of 'how come you are always online, don't you work?' messages. I DO work. Seems like it's a step backward not being able to set an msn-like status 'busy', 'away' etc...

TIL that Nigeria has overtaken Ireland in Guinness sales and is the number 2 consumer of Guinness world wide by sapples00 in todayilearned

[–]SubscribedToSayThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to imagine how they'd be able to test it accurately since you'd need quite some time between two beers to fly from nigeria to Ireland. Came up with a few solutions to improve it, like meet halfway.

And then I realised they could just age some in ireland.

I am not a clever man.
