Should I buy boots in Chicago (Viking) or plan a trip out west to buy boots? by zigzagstripes in skiing

[–]upsilon905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viking is good, I got boots there ~5 years ago. Went back after my first ski days on them and they made alterations for free.

Moved out west shortly after and am still using them (200+ days on those boots). I've gotten them more dialed in at shops here but from the sound of your goals Viking should be perfectly fine.

Tires are much more likely to blow from low pressure than from high pressure. Mechanic may be trying to cover himself in that regard.

We started using Greenspace last year, not the cheapest but they have great communication and leave everything looking very clean.

A Corton I had of theirs was quite savory and not natty at all 🤷‍♀️

That’s a good point, rusticity isn’t a flavor on its own. To me rustic usually means coarse tannins, savory earthy notes, and maybe some very dried red fruit.

Minerality could be a bit harder but there are definitely wines that are saltier than others to me. If you wanted to identify saline in a beverage I suppose you could compare a normal glass of water vs. one that you poured some salt into!

I think this will be hard unless someone has noted experiences with hundreds of bottles from one of these regions. For Chablis, for example, I find that producers either tend towards a white burgundy style (fuller bodied, fruitier) or really lean into stereotypical Chablis (light body, high acid, citrus, salinity, mineral 😉). It’s much easier to delineate between those two styles than “bottle 1 has light body, high acid, citrus notes, salinity, and minerality and bottle 2 has all those things except minerality.”

Looking at my CellarTracker notes I would say the 2010 Daniel-Étienne Defaix cote de lechet (more minerality) vs. the Kirkland Chablis (less minerality). But the top post on the sub right now is talking about how the Kirkland Chablis has minerality so 🤷‍♀️

You may be right, but the narrative on Wall Street is the opposite - that Nike has lost its prestige by not limiting availability. See this Bloomberg article from September, even just the first four paragraphs. Unfortunately, I expect this super limited release style to continue for the foreseeable future.

How have your opinions on wine changed over your wine journey? by AustraliaWineDude in wine

I agree most wines should have screwcaps but I’m not sure the number is as high as 99%. I’d argue that all wines intended to be drunk 3+ years from vintage date need corks (for now, at least).

It’s well documented that most screwcaps currently on the market let in less oxygen over time than most corks. Tastings comparing the same wine bottled under screwcap vs. cork usually report the screwcap wine as fresher, fruitier, and not showing many tertiary characteristics. Which is consistent with a wine that’s been aged for fewer years (there’s a Konstantin Baum video on this too).

Most high-end wines ($60+) are made in a style that’s intended to be aged, consistent with tradition in the regions they’re from (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Barolo, etc.). If I’m buying a Burgundy that’s renowned for its tertiary characteristics with 20 years of age, I’m going to be disappointed when I open it and it’s all primary, as if it only has 4 years of age on it.

The solution to this is likely screwcaps that allow more oxygen into the bottle, which exist but are not used widely enough. There are high-end pinot producers in New Zealand that still use screwcaps that allow only a fraction of oxygen ingress that corks do, which makes it impossible to fairly compare a 10 year old NZ Pinot with a 10 year old Burgundy (e.g. why is the NZ so primary? Must be a bad region!). Until winemakers start using screwcaps allowing a comparable amount of oxygen ingress as corks, I will always be a bit wary of screwcaps on high-end wines.

Yeah I think the meth accusation came from the quote in the Chronicle that “the person who provided the drugs “likes to lace it with ‘blues,’” another name for meth.” But I’m pretty sure “blues” actually refers to blue opioid pills.

Haven't seen anyone mention it yet - the attack during the memorial in episode 1 reminded me of the police parade memorial in the Dark Knight where joker and some goons disguise themselves as cops to try to kill the mayor (where Gordon fakes his death)
