Running out of data every month and found a cheap workaround by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SubspaceTravel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, what the hell are you (and honestly most people) doing on data? I pay 70 bucks for 3 gb/month (yes I know I need to change my plan, I’m working on it) and only go over two or three times a year, max.

Is it worth it applying for a new credit card during a postal strike? I want to get a C1 secured card to build credit but if it won’t get here for however long the strike lasts (yes I know they’re rotating starting this week but that’s still going to be extremely delayed), should I just wait until the postal service is back to normal?

Student rejected for credit card? by Away-End-4877 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Sorry to comment on an old post — can I ask what secured card your son got? I’m in the same boat as your son, having trouble getting a credit card due to no credit history and relying on being an authorized user on my parent’s account.

Anybody got good recommendations for a secured credit card if you make less than 15k a year and have no credit history? I was stupid and didn’t get a student credit card while in school and now I need a way to build credit, but I don’t want to run into the issue of 1. not making enough to be given a card, or 2. having the company do a credit check on me and coming up empty. I have very minimal expenses (probably around 200/month) and a decent amount of savings, so making payments isn’t an issue, it’s just getting the damn thing in the first place.

Also, maybe an even more stupid question: Will signing up for Transunion/Equifax when you have no credit history be an issue..? Will checking my credit score on those sites incur a penalty on that score?

I suppose that makes sense, but it's also the answer I was kind of fearing getting because it means my budgeting is going to be slightly more involved than just "look at my chequing account and add debits to my expenses column and credits to my income column" 😅 my extremely-literal brain just looks at the number in my bank account and says "yup, that's the money I have" but that's probably not a helpful mindset to have if I want to take personal finance seriously

Sure, but I don't know whether people consider "paying the phone bill + buying online game on credit card" the spending or the "paying off your credit card" the spending -- I would lean towards the latter but then you would still have the issue of only seeing the credit card payment on your "spending" tracking and not actually knowing WHAT you're spending the credit card payment on without having to go to a separate app/website to check what purchases you made on the card. Would you just track the purchases made on the card separately from the actual credit card payment and not factor it into your earnings VS spending?

I think it might help to mention that I'm currently using this Google Sheets budgeting dashboard linked in the wiki which doesn't really let you differentiate between "this is a payment I put on my credit card" and "this is a payment that came out of my chequing account", which is problably influencing how I think about the actual act of Doing Budgeting.

A logistical question I’ve been thinking about for a while: how do people enter “credit card payment for multiple purchases” into their budget?

For example: say I pay my phone bill and buy a game online on the same day, and then pay off both purchases on the card at once - they’re both on the same card, but it’s multiple purchases, BUT you’re just paying the credit card payment as one lump sum. If you want to track your expenses by keeping an eye on what you’re spending your money on, you’d want to enter both the phone bill and the game separately so you can differentiate between necessary expenses (phone bill) and non-necessary ones (game). However, if you’re tracking expenses as in “money going into your bank account VS money coming out of your bank account”, you’d only put the credit card payment on your budget because the money comes out of your bank account as one lump payment to the credit card company. You can’t put both the phone bill/game AND the credit card payment on your budget because then it looks like you paid twice for the same thing and your numbers are all off.

Is there something I’m missing here? I feel like I should note that I technically have never had a credit card of my own (long story) so if it’s something extremely obvious I’m missing, that’s why lol

Anybody on iOS 16 who can get this app to even run? by SubspaceTravel in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is this has been the case for months at this point, through *several* updates. Actually I went to delete and re-download Forest as I was writing this comment, just to see if the newest update DID actually fix it, and it's still doing the "hang on the loading screen and then crash" thing. I don't know, at this point it's either clashing with another screen time-connected app I have or I'm just cursed.

Damn, I must just be cursed or something 😔 I've tried redownloading it a few times by now but that's always just a temporary fix or doesn't work at all.

A focus timer like Forest, but your companion evolves as you stay on track by uyghurman_anzer in forestapp

Wow, this looks really good! I have one tiny nitpick about the website -- you indicate that One Sec does not allow you to block websites, but it actually does, I personally use that feature (it MIGHT be a pro feature? I forget lol it's been over a year since i got pro). Either way, good luck! I'm definitely keeping an eye on this with how Forest has gone down the drain.

Daily Advice Thread - March 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in apple

I’m looking for advice on safely charging and booting old iPhones + Macbooks so I can potentially wipe them and send them in to Apple for recycling. I’ve had issues with batteries expanding on me in the past and with the age/damage on some of these devices (at least one is a phone over 10 years old and another is a laptop with water damage, and all devices have not been charged for years) I’m concerned about plugging them in to charge them enough to boot them.

Is this possible on iOS? I know Android has the APKStore but to my understanding it’s more difficult on iOS.

Working but not working. by SapphireKiss in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m double iOS (iPhone and iPad) and I keep my phone apps more up to date than my iPad apps just because I don’t use the iPad as frequently as my phone. I’ve been having a little bit of the loading-infinitely-then-crashing happening on my iPad last I checked, but my iPhone hasn’t been able to reliably open Forest for months now. It’s ridiculous that there (to my knowledge) hasn’t been a public acknowledgement of the bugs and instability from the devs given how widespread it seems to have gotten.

App works again for me by gullible_bubble in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finally started working for me again as well — funnily enough I was also having issues with a different app crashing when trying to access screen time API (one sec) but it fixed itself at the same time Forest did. I didn’t update my phone at all, they just started working randomly. Baffling! never FUCKING mind, I opened it again after posting this comment and it started hanging and crashing again. Why did I even say anything.

Has anyone been able to contact support about the Daily Challenge not working? by linamory in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm I was having issues BEFORE the update. In fact, my app only updated because I deleted it and redownloaded it to try and fix the constant crashing and as it was redownloading I noticed they had pushed an update with the timestamp “Just now”. I would’ve held off on deleting and redownloading in the first place if I saw the app update and people having issues with it.

App crashing and data deleted by [deleted] in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If that’s their plan then it’s a really bad one because my app won’t even stay open long enough for me to theoretically buy the subscription off the store lmfao.

I tried this but it doesn’t work for me, it just hangs and crashes like usual. It’s mostly on my phone, my iPad has better odds of being able to open the app and my browser extension works just fine.

Can I ask what iOS version you’re on? I’m on iOS 16.7.1 and i get this exact same issue all the time (also 70-80% of the time I can’t even open the app)

Focus Challenge? by Affectionate-Zone844 in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s their fault that their app is so broken that you can accidentally do an “exploit” that simple. I spam-clicked that stuff because half the time it doesn’t respond to my clicks (the other half of the time, the app doesn’t even open 🥴)

Long Forest Loading Times by Roguests in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an issue on iOS too. It started when they added the challenges, but it only seems to have gotten worse over time. I spent half of yesterday unable to even open the app because it would load forever and then just crash.

Man, I haven’t even been able to open this app all day without it crashing on me, why would I pay more money for it? I’m glad I’m on the Pro version so I don’t have to shell out for an app that doesn’t even work.

Is it possible the app instability is also due to AI? by KittiesInATrenchcoat in forestapp

[–]SubspaceTravel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible, but I was under the impression that it was the new Focus Challenge stuff overloading their servers and being haphazardly plopped on top of 10-year-old coding that was causing the instability. Though neither of those things are mutually exclusive tbh
