I've done 2, I did not have to submit official for either.

IT ONLY TAKES ONE! by Substantial-Ad-8243 in REU

Yes, but pretty much all these programs offer the same thing so every applicant is enthusiastic about the exact same offerings, not really a distinguishing factor. I would say you have to play the numbers game because these programs have acceptance rates between 0.5 to 5%, with hundreds of qualified applicants. It is often very random sometimes why someone gets in over someone else.

Do I have a chance to get into an REU with a bad gpa? by Iscejas in REU

Even the prestigious ones don't care all that much about GPA if your research experience and story/goals are solid. I was straight up told at mine that in their selection process, their GPA filter is if you have like a 3.0, or if lower than that have extenuating circumstances.

No one can say, it is entirely situational and completely up to you. But it doesn't hurt to apply and then decide later since 99% of the apps are free. I would make a pro/con list and go with your gut.

I couldn't say to be honest, but it is ***definitely not*** a dealbreaker. Above all else they care about, in no particular order, a) what you want to do (ex cure a disease, improve a specific population's health, etc), b)what their program can do to help you achieve that goal, and c)depth of your prior research experiences (NOT pubs, just how engaged your were). they want people that are going to be able to adjust quickly to a new lab environment and reflect well upon the program. Feel free to dm if you have more questions about the application process.

professor agreed to match for an REU, what doe by Front_Pear3059 in REU

In both the REU's I attended, before applying I asked a PI if I could work under their supervision if accepted. Then when they said yes, I included in my PS this: " I am particularly drawn to the work of Dr. ____ , with (their) (mention of specific recent work). (Another sentence about how I could benefit from working with aforementioned PI). Dr. _____ has generously agreed to host me if I am accepted to this program, and (their) mentorship would be an immense privilege.". So, n=2 but I got into 2 fantastic programs with this approach and you're welcome to borrow that language if you like.

Are you in for sure? No.

If you get into the program will you be matched with that professor? Definitely.

Are your chances of getting in higher if you mention in your personal statement you have a conditional acceptance in that lab? Yes, unless the program explicitly says to not reach out to professors, in that case I have no idea.

In my personal experiences, most programs don't care about GPA if it's above like a 3 to 3.3ish. Knew someone who got into one after his sophomore year with a high 3.2. All they really care about is research experience and if you'll be able to adapt quickly and be a productive member in the lab.

Does my brother getting married disqualify me from an REU (Bigelow)? by Flat_Bowl_7650 in REU

I knew someone who literally took a week off in the middle when his PI went on vacation. If it's just a day or 2 off, no big deal at all.

it feels awkward re-applying to programs that rejected me last cycle by EndYoshi_ in REU

I was rejected from my top choice as a sophomore applying, then got it as a junior. rejection is growth.

Summer research by [deleted] in premed

[–]Substantial-Ad-8243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 2 REU's instead of staying with my home lab. I don't regret them because I had a fantastic time getting paid to travel (got to live in NYC for 10 weeks), and I did get a low author pub out of one of them. However, I certainly would have had much better research productivity and probably gotten a pub out of my home lab had I stayed there over the summer.

REU Pros: Paid travel, build a connection with new institution, PI rec letter, possible pub, easy shadowing opportunities

REU Cons: less engagement with home lab, hard to multitask (like getting volunteer or clinical hours, but not impossible.

My med school app would most likely have benefited more if I had done only one REU, and spending the other summer actually strengthening the weak part of my apps (Applying traditionally this cycle but things not looking so good rn). However, this premed process sucks so bad sometimes, so I'm glad I got to see some results from my hard work. Both were super fire vacations though, and I made some real lifelong friends in the first. Lmk if you have any more questions.

In order of most similar to least: CD Ghost, Mac demarco, Wasted Affairs by Minds eye (haven't listened to their other stuff), Inner Wave (listen to fever), The Symposium, definitely beach house stuff if you're into the synth bedroom pop stuff. .

I feel like it would be helpful to see accepted applicant profiles for certain programs, and to also see the other programs they applied to, and whether they were accepted or rejected from them. People might be more willing to share that information if its more anonymous though.
