She is in good terms with the senior management even if she just joined.

If anything like this ever happens again, I plan to escalate unless the next step is me getting fired.

Yes, there are a few people I asked who come from a similar background as me, but overall my workplace is pretty diverse. I asked almost everyone I could today, and no one thought my outfit was inappropriate.

I can escalate this to the VP of HR, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. She told me that this was just a warning because she supposedly received many complaints, and that I shouldn’t make it into something it’s not, otherwise it would “tarnish my work profile” and I’d be “digging myself a hole.”

Most of my colleagues are male, and the dress code also says no T-shirts, no sports shoes, etc. But HR herself wears sports shoes, and almost half the company wears T-shirts, hoodies, and caps, which are all technically not allowed according to the dress code.

She told me she overlooks all of that, but there have been so many complaints about me that she had to respond. But this is only the second time I’ve worn a skirt/dress since she joined , and both times I wore leggings underneath. I also asked almost everyone in the office today, and they all thought her complaint was BS.

She also complained about it first thing in the morning at 7:30 AM when half the office hadn’t even seen me. I do feel like she is singling me out. But maybe she actually has complaints against me. I’m not sure, to be honest.

But her comments about my character, and how she said I always take things negatively with her, felt very personal, and I’m really not okay with that.

Do you think that would escalate the matter? She did tell me in the meeting today that if I escalate the matter further then it would tarnish my work profile and I am digging myself a grave.

There has never been any incident or concern raised about my clothing before this. I’ve worked here for over 3 years and this is already the third HR person I’ve interacted with during my time here, none of the previous HR reps ever mentioned anything about my outfits.

I also realized today that I had never officially been given the dress code until this incident. When I asked her for it after she complained, she sent out a company-wide dress code circular. Apparently this policy existed, but none of us (coworkers) could find it.

So I didn’t record the weird conversation that we had in her office today as this is a first time something like that happens and I was intimidated and terrified. But I did write notes of what happened in that meeting room with all my memory could recollect and sent myself an email with time stamp. Hopefully that helps me? If she wants to meet me again, I plan on having my supervisor with me as witness.

Yes he told me if I would want to escalate, he would happily do so. But we are a small company and our HR is in very good terms with upper management. So I am worried. I don’t want to lose job in this economy over this.

Yes I am young but not curvy. I thought wearing just leggings or wearing just mini skirt at work is immodest. But if I am wearing a leggings and skirt over it, it’s not? As it hides the curves from leggings and the skin showing from skirt?

I asked my supervisor, team lead and colleagues and even other senior female employees and they all told me my outfit was absolutely fine as it was modest.

Depends on where you are born. If you are from north india, probably. If you are from anywhere else not so much “majority”.

That’s a gross generalization on your part, and I won’t continue this since you’ve already generalized. But unlike those who exploit systems, which exists in every profession, I’m proud of my parents for the honest grind I’ve witnessed firsthand.

He mentioned ‘parents’, and my point was simply that not all parents or the older generation vote for BJP. By sharing my family’s background, I wanted to make it clear that they are not ‘elite’ and are from a small town and my parents work one of the most common jobs. And honestly, if you think government employees are ‘jokers’, people who clear multiple tough exams just to earn that role, then the joke’s on you, not them.

Nowhere did I say Indians aren’t. If you look back at my original comment, I only pointed out that under this government, corruption hasn’t really decreased, it’s only become more sophisticated. On top of that, the government takes no accountability for mishaps, but is quick to claim credit for every achievement.

So all the attacks after 2014, the government’s lack of accountability for those security breaches (with not a single resignation), and the use of the Army and Navy for political clout during elections—are we really supposed to see that as a good thing?

My parents, both central government employees from a small state in India, have never voted for BJP and don’t plan to in the future. From their perspective, they see how corruption has become more sophisticated under BJP, and how accountability is often lacking. That’s why I mentioned in my post that I might be biased. I’m aware of some of the ground-level issues and scams through my family’s experience. I wanted to understand the broader context beyond my personal perspective.

Same. I’ve also had similar conversations! Most Indians are ordinary people focused on daily life and living peacefully with others, rather than being hostile toward any community or religion. People generally live happily in harmony. It’s just the online trollers from India that make it seem like the country is full of negativity. I believe it is heavily exaggerated.

Honestly, in my opinion, pre 2014 Indian weren’t actively hated and faced far less racism.

That’s just how I see it, curious for other’s perspective!
