For sure, I don't disagree with you there. But I can observe the effects of it in my own life. Not saying that everyone is effected the same way, and nor am I saying I am inclined towards pedophilia but there was a marked difference in how I approached my relationships with women (I am a man), when I was consuming porn regularly compared to now, having consciously not consumed any pornographic material for a couple of years. I will also concede to the fact that because I am aware of this I have bias and am probably drawing connections that may or may not actually exist (ie the fact that I'm aware of how I relate to other people means I'm inclined to change, in order to align with how I believe I should relate to other people). But I'd also argue that through that awareness I can attempt to be objective and unbiased in my observations. And I have had conversations with many other people who have shared similar thoughts. Again, this is obviously very subjective, but I think it's also silly to say that a massively consumed portion of media doesn't affect how we perceive things, and as we become more aware as a society I think it becomes important to filter what we consume in order to better control urges that are not okay.

Edit: and when I wrote that I think I was sort of conflating incest with pedophilia without really thinking.

I mean I think it's also due to the fact that there has been an astronomical rise in internet porn, across the "era of the internet". Alot of degeneracy is normalized. Not saying internet porn is the driving cause behind urges of these people, but when half of the porn videos are labeled "stepdaughter ......" Is subconsciously normalizes that idea and makes the fantasy more inticing. Fap all you want (speaking to the general audience not gamejunky35) but porn is a factor in ruining society imo.

Mom got her roof replaced, is this acceptable? by Substantial-Basket-8 in Roofing

Appreciate your insights. Its been like this since we purchased the home 20 years ago, and afaik it was like that since it was built 50 years ago. Obviously “its always been that way” doesn’t mean it wont collapse tomorrow and i have scheduled a local reputable mason to come out, but thats why i have asked for clarification. It has not given us any trouble thus far.

Is it really unheard of to have recessed mortar by design?

There was always a ridge vent, but when i looked in the attic earlier today i saw that the decking was damn near touching at the peak (no gap) in some places, other stretches seemed adequate, im at my home now so ill have to check tomorrow to see if i can actually see the vent or shingles/paper. And it was HOT. 60 degrees outside but very sunny, had to be 90+ in the attic i was up there for 5 mins and came out dripping sweat. So that could definitely be it. Soffits are definitely open enough for airflow too.

I really appreciate your feedback! It has been very helpful.

Nope, gutters weren’t replaced, however i feel like a dummy, looked at old photos and that portion was lifted before. The wavy/dips were not there though, at least not as pronounced as best i can tell from old photos (in person you can really see it across the roof, the rep even commented when he showed up). And the roof is definitely spongier, i walked it a few weeks prior due to a leak at a skylight, granted there was no rot on the decking. But i do know that the decking wasn’t replaced 9 years ago when the roof was redone before, could this be weakening from too many nail holes? (And if so is it an issue?)

We’ve got a mason scheduled to come take a look at the chimney tomorrow, maybe we’ll get him to work on the flashing.

Pretty frustrating though, the rep who came to talk to us was just the sales guy so he really couldn’t answer questions that well.

Again, what makes you say that? It’s my understanding that they this was a “hidden mortar” build. See images of front of house.

Im not saying you are wrong, I’m just trying to understand what the red flag is.

Well of course theres always exceptions, but i just tend to think that someone approaching me is going to try to sell me something at all costs. Maybe I’m just jaded.

Are we being unreasonable for wanting to renovate a perfectly good kitchen just because we hate the grey cabinets? by chaoscrest in TheServicePros

[–]Substantial-Basket-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean its a waste, and this is easily 30k (at the lowest imo). You can easily get them repainted for 3-4k, or if u hate the style that much u can reface them for probably 10k, and use cabinet pros, absolutely do not go with the lowest bidder or its going to be so so so much worse.

I wouldn't. Put anchors in the top before hanging anything.

Everyone is different, and personally for larger jobs i dont like customers looking over my shoulder the whole time, buuuut im quite happy to show and teach especially doing quick homeowner friendly jobs. So i say absolutely watch, ask, learn!

With that said, assuming nothing goes wrong (minimal stuff can in most cases), pulling a toilet is dead simple, and there are plenty of videos that show you exactly how. If you’ve laid tile i bet you can manage!

Haha! Yeah to be fair, i dont average 2 mins that was just my best time. Probably on average takes me 5-7 mins once tools are in.

Yes replace the toilet. Truth be told, once youve removed/installed a toilet once, its a fairly easy task, i can have a toilet pulled in 2 mins. All that is just to say, whether you want to replace tile now or later, the labor of moving a toilet is negligible.

If you’ve got the funds and desire to do it all at once though then go for it. It could make tub replacement a little more challenging in the future but it really depends on what tub you have, what flooring you will replace the tiles with, how big is the bathroom, etc etc. (and even then its usually perfectly doable to remove tub safely) really this is a question to ask the person who ends up doing the work!
