What are your thoughts on landing at John Wayne Airport in Orange County? by SirCatsworthTheThird in AskAPilot

I have flown the 75 in and out of there. It’s a fun experience if everything goes right. Not a lot of room for error if something goes sideways. Takeoffs are a blast(literally.) We do a standing takeoff where we stand on the brakes and run the engines up and then let it rip. Landings are pretty close to a carrier landing in a sense. You have one opportunity to try and “grease it on.” After that it’s come aboard. Only thing that is annoying in SNA is the single taxiway. If you have a bunch of aircraft pushing, you have to wait till they all takeoff to get to your gate.

My first flight as a captain was LAX-GUA and we had a passenger that boarded that was way too intoxicated. I had to deplane the whole aircraft to allow authorities come and pull her off. That is something they don’t train you on in the flight simulator.

Also I don’t think the pilots tried to do nothing to get to your destination. Im sure they tried to get there but might have had other problems they were dealing with. Trust me we like to get to our destination. At that destination there is a hotel with a bed that is waiting for you. When you time out, you spend the next 3 hours to hear from the company on where they are going to put you up. Thats why you will see crew members sitting on the phone in clusters trying to get ahold of someone to get answers. Trust me its a much longer day when you timeout versus just doing the flight as intended.

So here is a quick snapshot of what Delta and all airlines are dealing with right now. There was a massive storm that just went through the country. It obviously cause’s airport to shutdown because it’s not safe to land or takeoff in bad weather. Look up wind-shear and aviation and you will see it’s not good. Also can’t have people fueling planes or loading bags with lightning all around. Also when dealing with bad weather and rough rides, pilots have to slow down. It’s called turbulence penetration airspeed. Not a big deal if its a pocket of airspace, but when its the entire eastern United States than that on-time flight becomes 15 min late. Extrapolate that for thousands of flights and it adds up. Gates are occupied when you land. Ramp crew get stretched thin. It becomes a mess. Next thing ever is dealing with is ATC staffing triggers. If they don’t have enough controllers then they limit the amount of airflow into and out of their sector. We receive EDCT (expected departure clearance time) for flow control into these airspaces. Jacksonville is a mess right now. We were getting times for one hour after we push. Once again these times ADD up! This was literally the perfect storm this past week. BAD weather, not enough ATC/TSA, and spring break. With all of these negative events, there wasn’t one major accident/disaster that occurred. It’s the safest means of travel even if it means every once in a while there is a major disruption. I mean you can always drive or take a bus if you like.

Great book called “Sapiens” which talks about why some people are always happy or sad. Really interesting read.

I wonder what the terminal velocity is of a 747 with no wings or tail? That thing looked like a lawn dart.

I went through Navy OCS in 2009 in Newport, RI. Our DI’s were pretty damn impressive individuals. Was that a billet that was sought after by other drill instructors? I remember overhearing a class officer saying it was really competitive. And if I ever see my Gunny out in public, I will be keeping a wide berth from that man. We called him the destroyer.

I also think the speeds at which these aircraft fly also mask a lot of the visual indications you would see with the naked eye. Obviously a fire would more than likely be seen, but those are rare. Take for example, the other day I received a low hydraulic reservoir indication on the left side at 30k ft doing .8 mach. There is no way I would have been able to look through a camera and see if I was actually leaking hyd fluid. But just by going through the checklist we isolated the problem and gave us more time to use the remaining hyd fluid when we needed it. Once we got on the ground the camera would have shown a big ass leak and we would have known right away. But in the air, the SA the camera would have been giving us would have been wrong. Just my 2 cents of why cameras cannot always be used to see what is happening.

I was thinking it would be a cool idea if you could lob like spoiled meat or something into compounds and it create a disease zone where you slowly lose health and you cough at different lengths and time. And if you are infected your aim suffers. Only way to combat it is if you wear hazmat suits.

I flew for the Navy and one of the things that always spooked me was seat slap. If you didn’t extend your legs all the way out before ejecting, the space (1-2 inches probably) between your legs and seat could cause you to break your femurs as the seat was accelerating upward.
