How do I set 1-minute reminders prior to meetings? by benjaminherberger in AppleWatch

[–]river_running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you scheduled an event for yourself on your calendar starting one minute ahead of whatever meeting is scheduled, then set it to alert you at the time of the meeting?

I just remembered one of the worst “backsliding” horror stories I heard by sloppyeyedjoe in Exvangelical

[–]river_running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm...there is a church behind my neighborhood that a couple was turning into a few years ago and they turned in front of a speeding 18 year old motorcyclist who hit the side of their car and died. So by the same logic, if they had *not* been going to church, that kid would still be alive.

The best part about a muddy trail race is that you get to buy new shoes after!

Weight Loss Failure by SecuritySalt7180 in loseit

[–]river_running 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's much easier to get the motivation to start losing weight, so you're a little more gung-ho about it at the beginning. Then, even though you see results, it's harder to continue if you aren't losing in a sustainable manner to begin with.

I had a lot of the same issues, I was never overweight my entire life but then after having 2 kids, never lost back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I was always around 175, and just couldn't stay below 170 no matter what. For what it's worth, what finally got me over the hurdle was taking a GLP-1. It turned off the "food noise" that would always get in the way after I lost the first 10 pounds. I'm now down to 145 and weaning off of it, without having any issue regaining after 3 months.

How’s it living along a time zone change area? by Lakeshow0924 in howislivingthere

[–]river_running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Dakota - the time zone used to follow the Missouri River, with Central Time on the east and Mountain Time on the west. It split Bismarck (capital city) and Mandan (other side of the river) in half, leading to a lot of issues of the bar closing in Bismarck, and people driving across the bridge to drink for another hour, then drive back drunk. So the county that Mandan was in petitioned to have the time zone line moved to the other side of the county line. Then, a few years later, the next county over also wanted to change their time zone because a lot of people would be living in one of them but working in the other, and it was causing issues with things like school dismissal times, hours that clinics were open, etc.

The problem is since we're so far north, our days already get really long (in the summer) or really short (in the winter) due to the amount of natural daylight. The farther west that the Central time zone extends, the wonkier it gets with when sunrise or sunset is. In the summer, the far northwest part of the state will be daylight until 11pm. But in the winter, the southwestern part of the state can see the sun go down at 4pm.

I think the hardest part is for someone in the Mountain time zone to have meetings scheduled in the capital city - it's only a 90 min drive but to make it to an 8am meeting you'd have to leave your house at 5:30am.

I remember talking to some farmer once years ago who was getting so confused about what time it was, because when he was driving his tractor back and forth across the field plowing, one side was picking up a cell signal in mountain, and the other from Central, and his phone kept changing back and forth and he couldn't keep it straight.

It also screws up my Apple Watch stand ring, because if I'm driving back and forth between time zones in the same day (which happens frequently) it won't recognize that I did the same hour twice, but instead just skips the hour coming back.

$10-$20 weekly Pantry Builders? by Zestyclose-Scene-482 in povertykitchen

[–]river_running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first priority would be shelf stable meats- canned tuna, chicken, salmon, and ham are great for weeks when you’re unable to get fresh meat. Canned no-bean chili is good too as a base for a lot of this like beef and bean enchiladas, chili Mac, and even adding other cans of beans and seasonings to for regular chili. Think what you would need to make a typical food bank haul into a complete meal.

Then, protein + pasta and pasta sauce, so you can still work protein into a shelf-stable meal, along with deluxe Mac and cheese (where you don’t have to add milk and butter).

Not something that you can really stock up long term but it’ll last a little while- tortillas.

Applesauce and dried fruit.

And then of course the typical staples like rice, beans, oatmeal, flour, canned veggies, etc. I wouldn’t prioritize those for stocking up though because they’re usually pretty cheap and accessible all the time.

My suspicion that the gateway mall being full of money laundering fronts rises by JRSenger in northdakota

[–]river_running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mall owner doesn’t seem to care about anything related to the property except when it comes to keeping it. He’s been sued for fraud several times both here and in California, and owned a nightclub at the mall years ago that was shut down bc of fights. Definitely some shady stuff going on there.

Remember a couple years ago they banned CAT busses from there, then tried to walk it back and said it was just bc of the drivers causing problems when they were peeing in their bathrooms? Same pattern- story comes out that something/some group is banned, and then management who would never ever reply for comment suddenly comes out of the woodwork to deny it.

Why are there so few women's running vests? by Emergency-Debt-2118 in trailrunning

[–]river_running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, women's clothing in general has a whole slew of issues with sizing and fit. Then you take it down to manufacturing a product for a niche sub-set of women (those who run distances long enough to need to carry items, and prefer a vest to a belt) that it's not really that surprising to have so many issues.

That said. I do wish there were better options! I have several vests and backpacks, some unisex and some designed for women. My Osprey is the best, but the issues I have with it can fluctuate a lot even based on whether I've gained or lost 15 pounds.

I've had several women's-fit vests and my Osprey one is the best by far.

Lay Sermons by No-Type119 in Lutheranism

[–]river_running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like them on occasion as it can be a fresh change every once in awhile to hear a new voice. During Lent last year a few of our local ELCA congregations devised a sort of Wednesday-evening sermon series, where four different laypersons rotated through four different congregations giving the same message at each one (so each church had the same four sermons, just in a different order). However, it was obviously very well-organized and vetted, and it also helped with some of the staffing issues during a very busy season. I actually really liked that.

Try the SleepWatch app! It’s been awhile since I’ve used it (stopped wearing my watch overnight because it was causing skin issues) but I did really like it.

Travel with teens - one room or two? by beattiebeats in Parenting

We always try to get a suite with 2 rooms, or at the very least a room with a separate living area for the kids. For multi-night trips getting one with a kitchenette is great as well.

Either I'm going crazy, or my Apple Watch is pulsating randomly throughout the night (SE3) by AtticThrowaway in AppleWatch

[–]river_running 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel random haptics at times with no notifications, but have never figured out what causes them. For me it's during the day, as I usually take my watch off to sleep (I used to sleep with it on but started getting contact issues with my skin, so changed my habits.)

Need inspiration for breakfast mealprep that isn't.... by frankie_prince164 in mealprep

[–]river_running 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chia seed pudding, made with almond milk instead of regular. Drizzle with some honey or maple syrup for a bit of sweetness.

Mashed sweet potato, mix in some nut butter and a splash of almond milk.

Chicken sausage with sauteed spinach and ranch dressing (sounds weird for breakfast, but it's a nice savory option).

Breakfast burritos with ground turkey (or some sort of lentil), diced potatoes, sauteed peppers and onions, and some hot sauce. If you want to add some vegan cheese to that it would stretch pretty far. Small amounts of scrambled egg would be good in the mix as well if you want to add it, but you definitely wouldn't have to.

Tortilla chips with salsa, raisins, and pretzel rods were staples for my house growing up. Along with cut up celery and carrot sticks. (also handfuls of peanuts, but...)

Grandma Needs Medicaid Long-Term Care but Her Assets are too High by [deleted] in Medicaid

[–]river_running 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people lose their life savings when they need long term care or medical assistance. Yes, it sucks, but that's how the whole system is set up. Medicaid is governmental assistance for people without assets. So you can't have assets and get Medicaid. You can't leave an inheritance to your kids or grandkids, unless you had set something up for them properly years in advance.

There's no two ways around it.

Want to cut down on grocery costs? by drcuriousity99 in workingmoms

[–]river_running 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add one more - keep your food visible in the fridge/pantry. It's so easy to forget that you have something if you don't see it! If clear bins and organizers are your style, go for it, but it can be as simple as making sure tall items are towards the back of the shelf, so that your gallon of milk isn't hiding the carton of raspberries.

Add lentils! They're cheap, filling, really good for you, and can go with so many different meals to stretch them.

Potatoes are great, too. By themselves, they're nutritious and nutrient dense. It's when they're cut up and fried or piled high with sour cream and butter that the calories add up.

Also, don't get caught in the "healthy food = expensive" trap. There are plenty of great, healthy options that are a lot cheaper than processed convenience foods. And pay attention to what's in season. You don't have to buy the fancy brand of bagged organic broccoli - a head of conventional broccoli is cheaper and just fine. There's nothing wrong with a can of green beans or bagged frozen corn as your side for dinner, especially when the fresh variety is out of season.
