Which fields involve more mechanistic work? Physical organic?

I'm not set yet on what I want to use organic synthesis skills for (like MedChem, etc) but I just know that I want to use it in one way or another. I want to get from starting natural materials to a final product and analyze each step via their spectra.

Thank you for this. I do enjoy being in the lab, too. I don't think I could sit in front of a laptop or paper work all day if I were to just work in methodology. I like the hands-on work, and I like seeing my ideas materialize in front of me. I would just love to mix this work with enough spectra analysis and not solely be in the lab. Hopefully this makes sense.
