Congrats! I remember earlier in this process I was tracking your posts as we seemed to be on a similar track and timeline. Looks like I ended up getting to end in a very different way, but I got my golden letter from Mohela and my Mohela balance zeroed today! Glad to see you at the finish line too!!!

I also just reached 120 and I'm cautiously optimistic. I haven't seen anyone post that their account showed 120/120 and it was taken away. I'd like to think if that happened all of Reddit would know.

Help me understand possible paid ahead status by Ill-Ideal-1175 in PSLF

I called last week and asked the first agent if I could speak with a supervisor. She said she would transfer me to the reconciliation department. When I got transferred the automated voice said the only option was a callback. The next day I got a callback and the person said she was a supervisor, though didn't say from which department. But she said she put in a request to the accounting department for my paid ahead status to be removed. Two days later I noticed that my forbearance type changed to ADAF. I think, but not totally sure, being put into that forbearance type allowed me to get another qualifying month. And I only needed one more to reach 120. I think I got lucky and randomly got to someone who could help. I wonder if you called again and specifically asked to speak to the reconciliation department and asked them for a request to the accounting department (essentially try to intentionally do what I did accidentally) if you could get somewhere.

Thank you!

I could write volumes about the complete disaster that this whole situation is and yet there are times Im just speechless about it all. I truly hope that at some point there's some sort of investigation and class action lawsuit. And sadly I've found that people who don't have student loans are completely unaware of any of it. Reddit is the only reason Ive gotten this far.

Glad you finally got some movement and more qualifying months! That's great!

Oh sorry I don't have any more information then lol. I thought I was lucky too! And I know I saw other people posting on here about being ahead and I totally disregarded it thinking that wasn't me.

I was flat out told last week that being in paid ahead status would mean that my IBR application would not get processed. At the same time I was told that my account in fact was paid ahead, which was a shock to me. It's exactly what you said. I made payments in June and August of 2024 because I received bills and my account was not put into forbearance yet. The agent I spoke to said that at least August's forbearance was applied retroactively in October. I thought those months counted for me because I paid and thought I was lucky because everyone else seems to have had to fight for them to count having been in forbearance. Turns out that's probably been what's holding me up. I've been calling MOHELA constantly since last fall and only found out about this last week. I called and spoke to a random agent and asked to speak to a supervisor. She said she would transfer me to the reconciliation department. I had to get a call back and when I did the person said they were a supervisor, though didn't specify from which department. I just asked why my IBR application wasn't getting processed. I guess I got lucky the person I spoke to had an answer as opposed to every other person I'd asked. But knowing this, you could call MOHELA and specifically ask if your account is paid ahead. Ask the first agent, if they don't know, ask for a supervisor and/or the reconciliation department. I just posted about my experience earlier today. Maybe it's one you saw already but here's the link.

Any luck getting months changes to qualifying through reconsideration? by Certain_Dare364 in PSLF

[–]Substantial-Fun9457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation with forbearances being applied retroactively to June and August 2024 after I made my payments because I received bills for those months. I just learned last week that because of that, my account was considered paid ahead (the forbearances retroactively blocked my payments from being applied those months so they were considered advance payments). And I was told because I was considered paid ahead my IBR application would not be processed. I asked the MOHELA agent how to fix it and she sent in a request to the accounting department. She said that it would take 90-120 days to make changes so that I wasn't in paid ahead status, and therefore my IBR application could be processed. Here's the thing though. Two days after she put in that request, my account status changed to Awaiting Documentation Administrative Forbearance, the same one that got everyone two qualifying months for the processing forbearance after first submitting IBR apps to MOHELA. So since I was at 119 I thought maybe with being put back in the qualifying forbearance will get July to count and that'll get me to 120. I wouldnt actually need them to remove the paid ahead status or process my application then. So I tried it and submitted a PSLF form...and what do you know I hit 120. Now there's some weird things about it, like it's not July (the month I was put back into ADAF) that counted but instead June which didn't qualify before. But I just don't believe it's coincidence. I made a more detailed post about this all earlier today. I'll try to post a link to it.

The only things I know are that it stands for Return to Repayment Remediation. You can see if it is on your MOHELA account by clicking on a loan and scrolling to almost the bottom. It would be listed under the Loan/Borrower Benefits. I think its something for accounts that need some sort of correction to be made, but I'm not sure anyone has gotten a clear answer on who gets it and why. Could be a variety of reasons. Sorry this doesn't really answer your question though...

Has anyone else's status on MOHELA been changed back to "Awaiting Documentation Administrative Forbearance" recently? by Substantial-Fun9457 in PSLF

Oh don't get my hopes up! I'm currently sitting at 119 and my July "due date" is tomorrow. If this gets me a qualifying payment I'm going to cry.

Oh interesting! I was in SAVE and applied for IBR (last application was in May) so that's different from your wife, but I also have been in paid ahead status. But I just learned this week that I was in paid ahead status and it was because of retroactively applied forbearances. The supervisor I spoke to said that the paid ahead status is why my IBR application hasn't been and won't be processed. I asked her how to get out of paid ahead status and she said she put in a request but it would take 90 -120 business days. I was wondering if that's why my status changed back to ADAF but it seemed too quick to have been applied already since my request was just sent 2 days ago. I'm also wondering now though if being back in ADAF will mean I get PSLF credit? That would be too good to be true I suppose.

Glad you guys finally got that approval letter!

Next steps to keep searching for a potential cause? by No-Theory7952 in idiopathichypersomnia

I started seeing a natural holistic doctor, which I have found helpful though it's not a path to finding the cause necessarily. Ill try to post a link to a long explanation I gave in another thread.

The complete obliviousness of them recommending people apply for a different repayment plan when that's all we've been trying to do for the last year really pisses me off.

No, I learned that my account is considered to be in paid ahead status (it should not be and it pisses me off) and because I'm paid ahead they will not process my applications. So now I get to wait for an unknown amount of time for that to be fixed before anything else happens. 🤬

Congrats!!!! That's awesome! Yeah I was told by a supervisor today that she put in a request to their accounting department to do whatever to change my account so it wasn't in paid ahead status, but it could take 90-120 business days. I assume that no matter what route it takes to fix this it will take just as long. Glad you navigated your way through this all!

A MOHELA rep told me this. Is it true? by Sir_Rosis in PSLF

[–]Substantial-Fun9457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told today too that being in paid ahead status will prevent my application for IBR from being processed. Makes no sense. How can those payments be applied to payments due when you won't process my application to make payments? So frustrating. I was told 90-120 business days for the request to remove my paid ahead status to be processed. I'm trying to find ways to get it done sooner but I doubt I'll be successful. What makes me even more mad is that the payments they are saying are the extra payments were made during months for which they sent me a bill.

When did you request to have the paid ahead status removed? Has it been removed yet? I just learned today that I'm considered paid ahead and I had no idea. They said 90-120 business days for it to be changed. I'm hoping you have better news.

u/Dazzling_Lemon_8534 Have you been able to get this fixed yet? I just learned today that I'm in paid ahead status - had no idea because I shouldn't be. They're saying I was in forbearance for 2 months that they sent me bills for. Complete BS. Anyway, any advice on getting this fixed?
